Lisha’s Wedding
It is a lovely afternoon. The sun has only begun to hide behind the open, blue sea which indicates the nearing of dusk. Too bad that this also means the nearing of my marriage with my father’s business associate’s son.
I stare at myself blankly in the mirror while one of my remaining friends, Safia, arranges my hair and make-up – fussing about this and that and generally looking terribly sorry for me. And suddenly, I wanted it all back. My brother. My friends. My life. My freedom.
I can vaguely hear my friend telling me about how remorseful she is as I can’t pay attention because I can feel myself being pulled back in time – back to the time when my whole life turned upside down. The time when my brother was still alive. . .
“Lishaaaa! Come on! Let’s go! The guys are probably worried about us by now!” my impatient twin brother, Kier, bellowed.
“Waaaait! I don’t think I can keep up anymore!” I wailed.
“What?! You insisted on going to this hiking trip and now you don’t want to continue?! Ugh! I shouldn’t have let you go with me! I told you to stay home, didn’t I? But no, you had to go with me because you learned that my best friend is coming!”
“Aaaaw. You know that you can’t say no to me. You love me too much!” I said with a grin.
“Ugh! You’re right. I think I spoiled you too much. And look where that got us! In the middle of nowhere! We don’t even have a map or food or-”
The Essay on An Outstanding Friend Friends Time Hard
"Books and friends should be few but good" some wise person said. In that case, I have a very good friend who shows outstanding qualities. I will talk about her three prominent qualities which are: generous to the poor, very hardworking, and supportive to her friends. First, I have to say that she is a young Mother Teresa when it comes to giving. For example, every time she walks by a poor on the ...
“Uh…Kier?”
“What?!”
“I think I hear some river or water of some sort. Can we go there? Pleeeease?” I begged.
“I hate it when you do that! I swear someday you’ll be the death of me. Okay, let’s go.” He said and gave me a smile. We followed the direction that the splashing is from and after an infinity of walking, we found a relatively small stream! I got so excited that I ran for it immediately not thinking about anything except my need to quench my thirst and drink. But then I didn’t notice the slippery rocks lining the stream. I slipped and felt the world tilt and go into slow motion. I barely heard my brother’s shout before I —
“Heeey!!! Lisha! I’ve been talking to you for several minutes and you haven’t even given me a single response! Are you really listening to me or are you thinking about what happened with your – Oh my gosh! Why are you crying? What’s happening? Oh gosh! Sorry! I didn’t mean everything that I said. Oh no! Your make-up’s ruined! Wait. I’ll get you some water.” Safia said in one continuous sentence and before I could utter a word, she was out of the door.
I slowly stand up and approach the balcony door- my beautiful balcony door that’s now full of railing. I still can’t believe that my father was so paranoid about me escaping that he decided to lock me up here. And as if my thoughts conjured him up, he showed up in my room and asked about my nuptials’ preparations but I can’t even comprehend what he’s saying because memories are once again consuming me.
“What do you mean your brother’s dead?! He can’t die! He’s the future heir! The one who would someday take over the company! What kind of stupidity did you do this time, Lisha Tomlinson?” my father asked angrily.
But I was too afraid and too upset to answer. I know that he blamed me for my mother’s death and I can’t blame him because while my brother’s delivery was smooth and easy, mine was a great hardship because my mother was already tired after delivering my brother that she can barely gather the strength to give birth to me. The doctors gave her a choice between her life and mine and, obviously, she chose mine. I still can’t believe it. And now, my father also blames me for my brother’s death. I didn’t mean it – didn’t intend for it to happen. I was the one supposed to die – not my brother. And I know that I will forever blame myself for it because every time that I look at myself in the mirror, I see him staring back. If I wasn’t such a selfish sister who only thinks of herself and satisfying everything that she want in life, my brother would still be alive and I –
The Homework on The Fire in My Father’s Hands
When I was a kid, about 5 to 8 years old, my hands would always get cold whenever the surrounding air is chilly. My dad would always tell me to rub them together, like you would in order to make fire. And so I did it. I rubbed and rubbed and rubbed. My fingers grind against each other from the tips of my little fingers to the base of my palm, but none of this worked. My hands still are cold, stone ...
“Answer me!” my father shouted angrily, disturbing me from my thoughts.
“I-It was because I ran to the stream.”
“And—?”
“And I – I slipped a – and I – I don’t know!” I cried. “One moment I was falling – waiting for the impact when I heard him shout! And –” I stopped, unable to control the tears from falling.
“Oh for goodness’ sake! WHAT HAPPENED?!”
“I don’t know! The next moment, I was on my back in the ground. So I guess he pulled me back but lost his balance and slipped into the water, where it’s shallow, and he struck his head on the rocks! There was no signal so I can’t call anyone and I have no map and no nothing! I didn’t know what to do! Kier was the one who knows everything! And – and –”
“So it’s your entire fault! You have always depended on your brother! You don’t even know anything about survival! I am so disappointed in you! I can’t believe that you are so selfish that- that- Oh God! I can’t believe this! Go! Go to your room! I can’t bear to see you right now! Go!” he shouted and I ran to my room.
“Are you sure she’s okay? She looks like someone played with her face! What did you do to my daughter?! You need to hurry up or we’re going to be late!” he said irritably.
“Sir, I don’t know what happened. I was arranging her hair and telling some funny stories when I noticed her staring into space and crying!” she replied and my father looked at me intently.
“Very well. I’ll give you two more hours to prepare her and bring her to the beach. I’ll go there now and reassure the groom. I’ll meet you there, is that understood?” he asked before he departed.
“Are you okay? Come on. Let’s wipe your face clean so we could redo your make-up.” She said and pulled me to the bathroom, “Seat here while I get some tissues, okay?” I just nod. But as I stare at my reflection on the mirror, my gaze fell on the asphodels on the sink. The flowers that I can’t bring myself to throw but I also can’t bear to see. Then, tears clouded my vision and thoughts of the past once again overrode my consciousness.

“Dad? What is the meaning of this? Why are there people here? I don’t want these flowers! I don’t even know the persons who gave them!”
“You have no choice in the matter. You can’t take over the company so you’ll have to marry any one of my business associates’ sons whether you like it or not because any one of them would be capable of running my company. You should be grateful that I’m even letting you pick among them rather than me just choosing for you.”
“But – Can’t I just take over the company? I could learn! I’d do my very best to understand all those figures! I swear I could continue your legacy! I’d even start from the bottom if you want –”
“Enough! You can’t take over. You don’t even have a clue as to how to clean your own room! I’d be dead by the time you are even half way to the top! And I can’t leave the company hanging like that! There are competitions from other company. You can’t handle that! You’re too soft and too spoiled for your own good! So go face those suitors downstairs! And be polite. I’ll give you 3 months to get to know them and choose or you’ll marry a guy that I’ll choose for you.” He said before leaving me in my room – miserable.
I went downstairs and was greeted by consecutive hellos from my ‘suitors’. I can’t believe I’m going to pick a husband as easy as picking an apple from a tree. I just sighed and allowed my gaze to travel among my ‘suitors’ and instantly stopped in my tracks. No wonder they are willing to marry a girl that they haven’t even seen before. Each has their own characteristic or defect that would make it difficult for them to find a girl themselves. As I approached, each of them stood up to introduce themselves. One of them is very thin and has these big eyes that looks like it would pop from his head any second now. The next looks like he spends most of his time indoors because he looks really pale and could also use a nice haircut. Another has these really humongous teeth – like a rabbit’s while the last is an arrogant looking guy who looks like he would rather be in a whole different place than here. In fact, among them, he is the only one who looks relatively normal. ‘Big teeth’ is the one who approached me first.

“Hello. It’s so nice to meet you! My father owns 20% of the stocks in your company. It would be my pleasure to get to know you. I’m sure we’d get along just fine. Now, why don’t we sit here so we could discuss how –”
“That’s enough for now, Campbell. I think that you should sit down first and let the others introduce themselves.” My father- thankfully! – cut in. “Go on boys. Introduce yourselves.”
“H-Hi Miss Lisha. I – I’m K – Kennady and I – I think it would be appropriate t – to say that I – I think we suit and th – that I’d very much l – like to know y – you.” ‘Pale guy’ shyly said.
“My turn Ken!” ‘Big eyes’ said and pushed Kennady aside. “Hi! My name’s Ethan and I am the son of the owner of the company supplying your company’s materials. It would really be nice if I could get better acquainted with you.” I nodded and turned expectantly on ‘Arrogant guy’.
“My name’s Blake. My father forced me to go here and I hope that that would be the only thing you’ll know about me.” ‘Arrogant guy’ said and sat. Great. One suitor less to get rid of. Three to go. I smiled to myself. This would be easy.
“Okay. We’re ready.” My friend announced. But I can’t even make myself move. My mind is just beginning to function and take note of my surroundings. I guess my time is up. I nod and stand up to pick up my veil and bouquet of asphodels when a thought struck me. I looked at my friend intently with eyes full of hope and asked, “Would you help me?”
~~~
“Aaaah! When would the bride decide to show up?” My business associate said with impatience. Well, I can’t blame him. My daughter had been acting strange these past few months; her suitors have all run from her, screaming – accusing her of the weirdest things like how weird she dresses, how uncivilized she eats, or even how poorly she treats her beloved pets. I’ve given her three months and what happened? She scared her suitors out of her life! I guess she really doesn’t want to marry. It’s a good thing that I have a back-up plan in case worse comes to worst. My best friend, my business associate, has this son of his that’s responsible and would one day become the CEO of their company. It’s a good thing that the boy is career-driven so when he learned that he’ll have the chance to take over 2 companies if he marries my daughter, he didn’t ask more questions.
“I’ll go up and get her. I think she’s just waiting for us to get bored and cancel the wedding. I’m pretty sure that 2 hours is enough to redo her.” I answered and headed for the house. I knocked on the door and waited for it to open. But it didn’t even budge.
“Lisha? Are you there? Open the door! NOW!” I knocked harder and a cold, heavy lump settled on my stomach. I reached for my keys, turned the lock, and slammed the door open. It was empty – save for my daughter’s engagement ring and asphodels. I can’t believe what I’m seeing – I shouted.
“Mr. Tomlinson! What’s the matter? We heard your shout downstairs and we – Oh God what happened?” my business associate asked as he took a look at my face.
“M–My daughter – she ran away.”
