The purpose of this project is to find a significant problem of interest that requires the analysis of secondary data and to find out some background information/research related to the topic chosen.
The topic I have chosen to study is smoking in teenagers.
Teenage smoking is something that has been going on in the world for more than a while now. Many teens start smoking because they have friends or older siblings who smoke. Some teens look at smoking as a way to get through parties, dates, or other difficult social situations. Smoking gives them something to do with their hands and makes them feel older or more sophisticated. Some teens smoke because they feel they look too young and that smoking may make them appear more like an adult. Some teens – especially girls – think smoking is a way to keep their weight under control. A person might think that if she has cigarettes in her hands, she’s a lot less likely to eat. Others believe that a cigarette helps them relax when they’re stressed out because of schoolwork, dating problems, or family pressures.
Teens often start smoking because one or both parents smoke or because another close relative is a smoker. They get the message that smoking is an acceptable habit. Others smoke because it isn’t acceptable in their families. These teens may think that smoking shows that they are old enough to make their own decisions.

* Each day, between 82,000 and 99,000 young people around the world start smoking. Almost 20 per cent of Canadian teens (aged 12-19) currently smoke (daily or occasionally).
* In Canada, the smoking rates are generally higher among males than females.
* On average, males smoke more cigarettes a day than females.
* Youth smokers make more attempts to quit smoking than adult smokers.
What the Canadian Lung Association has to say:
* 8 out of 10 teens who try smoking get hooked.
* Over half of Grade 12 students are unable to quit.
* Only 5% of student smokers think that they will be smoking in 5 years. But 5 years later, 80% of them are heavy smokers.
* 60% of smokers try to quit. Most smokers quit several times before stopping for good.
* 80% of smokers would like to quit.
* Cigarette smoking is more addictive and harder to quit than heroin or cocaine
Background Information
Despite a general decrease in tobacco use, smoking is still a significant health threat to U.S. teenagers as of 2010. According to Medline Plus, almost 1/4 of American high school students smoke, 30 percent of whom will become addicted and die prematurely from smoking-related conditions. In addition, teenage smokers are more likely to suffer from anxiety disorders and to use illegal drugs and alcohol.
One in every five high school students currently smokes, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Overall, nearly 90 percent of long-term smokers first try tobacco before age 18.
Teenagers who smoke put themselves at risk for many serious health conditions. The American Cancer Society states that cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 dangerous chemicals–60 of which are known to cause cancer.
Chronic bronchitis, emphysema, heart disease and cancer of the lungs, esophagus, pancreas and cervix are among the many diseases caused by smoking. Pregnant women who smoke put their babies at risk for complications such as stillbirth, SIDS and low birth weight, according to the American Cancer Society.
The Essay on Second Hand Smoking Smokers Smoke
Smoking needs to be stopped Millions of people around the world enjoy the disgusting habit of smoking. This habit contributes to an epidemic of disease, which brings pain, suffering and death to millions every year (Active Smoking). We need to end this suffering by banning smoking in all its forms. Smokers, non-smokers, and the environment are all adversely affected by smoking. Smoking is one of ...
The best way to prevent smoking in teenagers is by providing accurate information about the dangers of smoking. Awareness programs that incorporate teachers, parents, community leaders and the media are very effective in educating kids and teens about smoking risks. Highlighting the aesthetic effects of tobacco use–such as premature aging, bad breath and smoker’s cough–can act as an additional deterrent for image-conscious teenagers.
In 2010, 6.0 million (20.8%) Canadians aged 12 and older smoked either daily or occasionally— 24.2% of males and 17.4% of females (Chart 1).
For males, this was a significant increase from 22.6% in 2009, and a return to about the same level as in 2008. For females there was no change from 2009, though it was a significant decrease from 18.5% in 2008.
Smoking Rates in Teens 2011-2012 (From CTV News)
A new survey shows dropping rates of drinking, drug use and smoking among Canadian teens. For instance, the percentage of teens who have ever tried smoking cigarettes dropped to 15.5 in 2010-2011, the lowest rate since monitoring of teen smoking began. Some of the declines are small.
The figures are contained in the Youth Smoking Survey, which is funded by Health Canada and released every two years. This cycle is based on interviews with 50,949 students in Grades 6 through 12 in all provinces but New Brunswick, which didn’t participate this time around.
While the figures on smoking are low — and dropping — the Canadian Cancer Society still saw signs for concern.
The organization used the release to call for a ban on all flavoured tobacco products, in a bid to discourage smoking of little cigars and hookahs — also known as shisha.
Knowing fewer young people are smoking cigarillos is welcome and important,” Rob Cunningham, senior policy analyst for the cancer society, said in a statement.
The Essay on Proposal on smoking among students
1-INTRODUCTION The age of smoking initiation has dropped over the past four decades. Since behaviors and attitudes adopted in late childhood or early adolescence predicts future smoking, it is important to understand the smoking and other risk-taking behaviors and attitudes of children aged 12 and younger. There supports the idea of early identification and targeting of children at high risk of ...
But he said some tobacco companies continue to sell cigarillos in flavours such as chocolate, peach and cherry, which are attractive to youth.
“As well, we are now faced with the increasing popularity of water pipe smoking, a product that may be a gateway to tobacco addiction,” he said.
The survey found six per cent of youth in Grades 6 through 12 reported ever trying a water pipe to smoke tobacco and two per cent reported such use during the 30 days prior to completing the survey.
The highest prevalence of past 30 day water pipe use for smoking tobacco was among current smokers, with 20 per cent saying they’d smoked hookahs during that period.
The rate of current smokers in Grades 6 to 9 dropped to two per cent in 2010-2011, from three per cent in 2008-2009. Of students in Grades 10 through 12, 10 per cent said they were current smokers, down from 13 per cent two years earlier.
Drug use also appeared down. Only five per cent of the survey participants admitted to using MDMA (ecstasy) over the previous 12 months, down from six per cent in the last survey.
Reported use of hallucinogens and salvia also dropped to four per cent and three per cent respectively, compared to seven per cent and five per cent in the previous survey.
And reported cannabis use also dropped, with 21 per cent of students in Grades 7 to 12 saying they used the drug over the past 12 months compared to 27 per cent in the 2008-2009 survey. On the alcohol use front, 45 per cent of students in Grades 7 through 12 said they drank alcohol in the previous 12 months, compared to 53 per cent in 2008-2009.
One third of students reported having participated in binge drinking imbibing five or more drinks on one occasion — in the past 12 months. However, that is down from 39 per cent in 2008-09.

The Term Paper on Early Intervention In The First Grade
Early intervention are programs that are designed for young children who are below grade three or those children falling in the age brackets of three years and eight years. These programs are usually designed to help children who seem to lag behind their peers at school in such areas as reading skills which are likely to persist into adulthood. If such cases of children who appear to lag behind ...
broke it down into provinces than cities than school. I decided to survey West Humber CI class
of 2011-2012 ages from 13-19. These are the results I got:-
Ages Of Student | Frequency |
13 | 2 |
14 | 2 |
15 | 2 |
16 | 4 |
17 | 4 |
18 | 5 |
19 | 6 |
As you can see the results in the graph the number of smoker increase by the age. Student ages from 13-15 are similar and so are student ages from 16-17. Student ages 18 and 19 have the highest number.
Mean:
Ages Of Student | Frequency |
13 | 2 |
14 | 2 |
15 | 2 |
16 | 4 |
17 | 4 |
18 | 5 |
19 | 6 |
13 (2) + 14 (2) + 15 (2) + 16 (4) + 17 (4) + 18 (5)+ 19 (6) = 420
Median
Number of smoker = 2+2+2+4+4+5+6 = 25
The median is at the average of the 25/2= 12.5
13.5 position
To find out the 13.5th position and 14.5th position, we add up the frequencies as shown:

The Essay on Reasons Teen Disrespect Is On The Rise
Though cultures have many differences there have been a few traits that have united them across the spans of time and geographical area. Many of these traits have even been included in religious doctrine or social and moral laws. In western philosophy and religions the concept of respect has help a high place, allowing a clear distinction between those who have experience and answers to those who ...

Two questions on Permutation and Combination:-.
1) There are 25 student asked to participate in a survey. What is the probability that a female will be chosen first than male. Female 12 male 13.
2) There are 12 females and 13 boys. In how many ways can you arrande them in a row so that no two boys are together.
Conclusion:-
The purpose of this project is to find a significant promblem of interest that requires the analysis of secondary data and to find out some background information/research related to the topic chosen. The topic that I have chosen to study is smoking in teen. I specifically look at the school West Humber CI. Since I couldn’t information on all the teen in Canada. From my results I found out that smokers is really common in teen and has been increasing in the past few year.
