Midwife (CNM)

Midwifery has been around for centuries and has been practiced for generations. The word ‘midwife’ can be translated in many languages like Spanish, English, and Portuguese in; any language the real meaning is “with women.” In this century it’s just midwife (CNM) for short. This occupation is generally in the medical field working with doctors and others in the hospital. This occupation is considered to be in the Grandview High School Career Pathway. You can take classes at Grandview High School that will prepare you to study midwifery in college, like chemistry, health, and trigonometry. Midwifery has been around for generations being taught to thousands future midwives. It’s known that women would gather herbs and attend women at childbirth. When men began practicing midwifery, they wanted to modify how women give birth. Then so on and so forth midwives came to be.
Job Duties
The duties and responsibilities of a midwife vary depending on how far along the mother is in her pregnancy. In the first months of pregnancy the midwife preforms exams and tests to make sure the baby is developing well. In those first months the midwife talks to the mother about a delivery plan which include where and how she wants to give birth. The midwife also informs the mother of any diets and nutrients she must have to keep the baby healthy. One of the responsibilities of a midwife is to give the mother updates on any changes that occur with the baby, like the position of the baby and their vital signs. (Midwife Job Duties, 2012).

Then one of the biggest responsibilities of a midwife is to deliver the baby safely and make sure the mother is doing her part in delivering the baby. When it comes to the big show, the midwife must be calm at all times and never panic. After the pregnancy the midwife also takes care of the mother and acts like a pediatrician for the baby. All of the midwives’ duties are interesting, but the two I thought were most interesting were performing exams/tests and delivering the baby. (Nursing Dreams Realized 2012).
I think giving the mother wonderful news that the baby is developing well and everything is going smoothly that would make everything more amazing. The most tedious job would have to be delivering the baby. When the mother is ready to pop, it is important you don’t freak out and start panicking. Keep cool, calm, and collected. It’s vital you’re calm when delivering; if anything goes wrong, the mother and the baby’s life can be in danger. A day in a life of a midwife would consist of updating patient profiles, checking in on expecting mothers, and working with any of the doctors or anyone who needs assistance in the work area.
Education and Skills
The most common degrees you need are a Bachelor’s degree, Associates degree, and a diploma from an approved nursing school. The education a midwife has to go through are passing various exams to get your license. Midwives also go through training; they first cover nursing training then midwifery basic training (What Kind of Training, 2012).
Also a midwife must complete a Bachelor of Science degree and nursing. By completing this course you practice basic nursing and safe patient care (nurse midwife Overview, 2012).
You also get to participate in normal deliveries and assist in cesarean section deliveries. If you’re looking to become a midwife then the University of Washington and Ohio State provide these programs. Skill wise, all a midwife needs is the knowledge to help with the delivery and how to handle the mother and the new born needs. Midwives must have a calm temperament. They must reassure the mother everything’s fine and keep the mother calm as well. During and after the delivery, the midwife will provide moral and physical support.

Advancement
Usually how midwives advance in their profession is by directing their nursing/ midwifery programs into hospitals, clinics or some also go into private practice. Most stay in hospitals or work in homes. Then some combine their midwifery career with teaching and they become a teacher at a college/ university or work in public health schools (Advancement, 2012).
People who want to change jobs still want to be in somewhat the same field. Some of the other jobs that relate to midwife are Health Promotion Specialist, Hospital Doctor, and Pediatric Nurse. A Health Promotion Specialist works with promoting a healthier life style and provides good eating habits. They also develop policies and strategies for promoting health at local regional or national level. With developing healthier strategies next they work with identifying training needs to keep you in healthy shape. You could always become a Hospital Doctor. They carry out specific procedures performing operations. Also working with other medical and non-medical staff in the hospital to ensure quality treatment. Being a hospital doctor you still perform exams and diagnose their medical conditions. Then you can also go get a job as a Pediatric Nurse. This type of nurse you also engage in promoting multidisciplinary team work, including working alongside specialist, doctors, nurses, health visitors, and social workers. You also respond quickly to emergencies just like a doctor or any other person in the medical field would. Then you also get to assist with test and evaluations of the patience (Health Promotion Specialist, 2012).
Work Settings
The work environment of a midwife can be from the hospital to the mother’s home (Work Conditions, 2012).
While in the hospital the midwife makes her rounds and checking up on expected mothers. Sometimes they move the mother around and help the mother get exercise. Then they also clean up the rooms and helps deliver food to the rooms. Then you got midwifes that work with at home births. In this environment is different you’re not surrounded by hospital is the comfort of the mothers own home. Having an at home birth is just as safe as having him/her in the hospital. As long as the midwife does exactly what’s he/she has been training for. As a midwife you work with practically everyone in the medical field, but when the mother is in her first months she/ he works alone just checking in on the baby and the mother. Then when the pregnancy comes you need at least a couple more people to help assist with the baby. Working within the hospital there are no disadvantages you got everything you need right there, but working at home I thing getting the right equipment would be a disadvantage. Some of the advantages of working at the hospital is when you need more help there’s a lot of help (Work Conditions, 2012).

For the top salary for CNM’s can be above 80,000- 100,000 or more if there in private practice. Midwives also get paid for the deliveries and that comes out to 1,200 and 2,500 midwives at least deliver 40 to 50 babies per year (Certified nurse midwives and licensed midwives, 2012).
Also there are several factors to the pay range for midwives like level of work experience, facility of employment, location of providing services, and the most important factor is the certification. For midwives you also get more money for the years and experience and the geographical location they work within. With the education and experience level increases so does the incoming money (Experience, 2012)

The benefits are very generous they are all full paid and the midwife has all those options. Some of the other work benefits may include health insurance, flexible schedules, paid tuition, and pension plans for later on in life. The income of a midwife meets the cost of living. At the beginning of your career a midwife doesn’t earn as much as a MNM the pay roll slowly increases in time and experience.
Future Expectations
In the future the midwife work force looks really good the demand of more midwifes will increase. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics there will be a 22 percent increase over the 2008 to 2018 decade especially all around the world the job opportunities will be more demanding because of all the women in the world. With the population prospering, and more advanced technology and a better understanding of pregnancy will allow more women to have healthier pregnancies. With the advancement of the technology and are knowledge growing with time this can help avoid any complications with the delivery. In the future the only things that will change are the understandings of delivering, and the technology. Being in the medical field you could always further your knowledge and always advance to something more.
Conclusion
Midwifes have been around for centuries even before recorded history. It is known that all deliveries are handled by women giving them their title Midwife. It takes a Bachelor’s Degree and other training to become a CNM. What I like about this career is you get to inform the mother about her baby’s development and sees the baby’s vital signs. Being able to tell the mother everything is going according to plan. The duties midwives do I wouldn’t mind doing it for the rest of my life, caring for the mother, delivering babies, working in and out of the hospitals sounds busy and my kind of job to keep me occupied. In this career it takes time for your money to be coming in you get paid by the knowledge and the experience you have in your area of profession. Thiers always going to be a need for midwives in the future and this career is very promising to maintain my life style and keep me busy. Midwifery is my future career.
