1. Introduction
In 1991 the World Wide Web was created by developer Tim-Berners Lee as a way for people around the world to communicate and share information in a way that the internet could not. The internet although successful with universities and colleges did not appeal to the general public as the internet was only being capable of displaying text which was usually all in one font and one size. With the internet failing to appeal to the masses and the internet failing ‘the World Wide Web saved the net. Not only did it change its appearance, it made it possible for pictures and sound to be displayed and exchanged’ (Peter 2004, online).
In 1993 Mosaic later renamed Netscape was released which was the first user friendly browser to appeal to the general public and it dominated the market until the mid to late 90’s until Microsoft created its own browser Internet Explorer. This began the first browser war which Netscape ultimately lost due to Microsoft bundling Internet Explorer with its operating systems Windows 95 and Windows 98 which dominated over 80% of the operating system market at the time so for the first time in 1998 ‘Microsoft Internet Explorer was shown to have captured 48.3 percent of the market, leaving Netscape Navigator with 41.5 percent’ (Calore 2009, online).

Today the fact is the majority of the people in the world no longer only have one browser installed on their computers. As a result, companies are competing with each other to create the best, the most efficient, and the most user-friendly web browsers. This competition for dominant usage share led to the browser wars of the late 1990’s and the new browser war that is still going on today.
2. Internet Explorer
2.1 Introduction
With the toppling of Netscape in the late 90’s Microsoft’s Internet Explorer dominated the market, Appendix a shows that in January 2002 Internet Explorer held an 85.8% market share. The dominance was due to the web browser coming bundled with all Microsoft operating systems from Windows 95 onwards and with the massive success of Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Appendix c shows the dominance Microsoft operating systems had on the market in 2003. The main competition for Internet Explorer today is Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome who since there introduction into the browser market in 2003 and 2008 respectively, Microsoft have seen there market share fall year after year. Appendix b shows that in December 2011 Internet Explorer only had 20.2% of the market share while Mozilla Firefox had 37.7% and Google Chrome had 34.6%.
2.2 Advantages
Internet Explorer has stayed a contender in the browser market because it is ‘the standard browser that most people are familiar with, and has been around for a long time’ (Stubbs 2010, Online).

Many people who are not computer smart use Internet Explorer because it is preinstalled with their operating system and see no need to change due to its high level of support if it crashes and its high level of security.
2.3 Disadvantages
Speed has been an issue with Internet Explorer for many years and ‘Independent tests have found IE 8 to be significantly slower than the alternative choices’ (Raphael 2008, online).
Add ons and apps are an ever increasing craze and Internet Explorer falls well short of what Firefox and Chrome offer there users in terms of content and customization of the browser.
3. Google Chrome
3.1 Introduction
Google’s first stab at the browser market comes in the form of Google Chrome which was released in 2008 and since its release has grown in popularity at a very fast rate. Appendix b shows that in December 2011 Google Chrome had 34.6% of the market which in just 3 years is a massive achievement for the company and the designers. It is the first browser to offer multi-process architecture which means each page that is open has its own process this is an advantage to users because it means ‘one slow site won’t drag down the speed of the rest of your browsing. Instead, you can effortlessly click to another tab or window’ (Hudson 2008, online).
3.2 Advantages
Like the search engine Google Chrome’s simplicity is a key advantage with its clean design that wastes no screen space meaning a richer online experience.
