Mount Pleasant
As kid, your imagination is great. Even small things can become great, just by their imagination. Most of the kids have tried to hear or see “ghosts” in their new house. Especially if the house they live in is old and big. But sometimes, it may not just bed their imaginaion.
Mount Pleasant is a short story written by Mary-Louise Buxton. The story is about a family living in a house called Mount Pleasant. The family contains of two girls, one boy, mom, dad and a dog. The two girls are maybe around seven to ten year, and the little boy is a baby. From the text, we can see that the family lives in a small town. There is Prospect Church , a nunnery, a row of little shops. Mom is the strict one in the house, and dad is the fun guy. One day the protagonist finds a picture of a little boy, her mom gets mad: “If I see that bloody picture on the table again at tea time,” Mammy said, “I’ll fire it straight into the bin”.(P. 3, L. 52-53), and her dad says that maybe the guy lived here before them: “Maybe he lived here before we did” (P. 4, L 81) , but the boy in the picture resembles the narrators dad: “He’s got a wide toothy grin- like Daddy (…)”, which make its more suspicious. And except these things, the two girls also hear voices at night: “We lie awake and hear footsteps walking across the length of the floor above us. It starts, dragging-feet slow, at the far end of the room then builds up fast into a run just up to where the door is-stops- then turns around and drag slowly, slowly back (…)”.

NOTE: phrases highlighted are being modified to the phrases shown in brackets. (I’ve always found something fascinating about seeing an old dilapidated house along a winding road, they spark my curiosity.) Something about the fascination of dilapidated houses along winding roads sparks my curiosity but most of all give me shivers. (I stare; captivated by the sight) looking at the sight of the ...
The story is written in 1st person singular and told by the protagonist herself, it is written like a diary. We as the readers read about the girls life, we gets all the small details, like what will make her mom mad at her, or what she does with her friends etc. We get to hear the protagonist’s thoughts and her feelings, it is like being in her head.
The mom is very strict, the kids are almost not allowed to anything. And if they do something wrong they will get punished. Especially the girls. The reason for this behaviour could maybe be, that she have suffered and lost “someone” in the past. The “someone” could probably be the boy in the photo that the protagonist finds in their new house. There must be some kinds connection between the family and the kid on the photo, because the mom gets very upset just by seeing the picture, and dad takes the photo and put the it on the mantelpiece, and says that he can be a part of the family: “We’ll put him on the mantelpiece, shall we, with our photos. He can be one of the family” (P.4, L. 81-81).
Then there is the voices the girls can hear. The protagonist and here sister Lena. They believe that there is a ghost in the house, but the “ghost” never enters the girls room. But one night, the mom is not home, and their dad helps them into the bed, the protagonist feels that there is someone entering the room, and sitting on here bed: ” I can feel the weight of somebody sitting on the bed, somebody watching.” (P.6, L. 169-170) and “Then a gust of wind blows the door fully shut and it’s as nobody has been there at all.” (P.6, L. 177).
Maybe there has been kinda accident, our even a murder, because there is a text printed on the backside of the photo:”Rough proof by Stephenson and Johnson Stretford dash dash Lon”(P.3, L.67).
Maybe there is some talk of child abusing. Something the mom did in the past, and they lost there son. Thats why the mom tries to keep everything perfect, hers kids, their clothes: “(…) – they’re always telling Mammy what two beautiful little girls she has, and how well dressed we always are (…)” (P.4, L. 85-86, the mom get satisfied by the comments she gets.”They give med and Lena bumpy woollen jumpers what they knit for poor kids – and Mammy isn’t proud, she always takes them – and unravels them and knits them again, better, (…)” (P.4, L. 87-88).

It shows that the mom wants everything to be just perfect. She wants to show other people that she is a good mom, maybe she want to get rid of the guilt she is feeling. “Flash darts round, lips pulled back, all sharp teeth like Mr Wolf in my fairy tale book. He barks – three short barks (…)”. The family dog barks at the dad, and it is kinda supicious that the dog barks at his master, maybe the dog has been witness of the boys death.
All the things are mysterious, the photo, the noice at the night, why the mom is so protectiv and want that the other people like her kids. All of this have some kinda connection to each other. But there is no answer.
