Nez Perce tribe lived in Pacific Northwest of the United States. During the Lewis and Clarck expedition owned about 17 million acres, going through parts of Oregon,Washington and Idaho. In 1877 the Nez Perce had a clash with the US army. The US government created a treaty that would shrink the size of the reservation by 90%. While most of the members of Nez Perce left the reservation, about a quarter refused to allow the government to take part of their reservation. In 1877 645 men fought US soldiers. On August 9th Colonel John Gibbon attacked the Indians by setting their lodges on fire during the night. Four days later, after losing 89 members Chief Joseph decided to surrender and return to his reservation.
As of 2011 there were 3,500 members of the Nez Perce tribe. The reservation consists of 750,000 acres of which the tribe members own 13%. Currently the headquarters is located in Lapwai, Idaho. There was really only one leader of the Nez Perce Tribe, Chief Joseph. He was one of the most famous Indian tribe leaders. After he decided to surrender during his fight with the amry, he was taken to Kansas with some of his people and they were sent to prision until 1885. When they were able to return home most of them were seperate from their hometown in Idaho and were sent to a non Nez Perce reservation in Washington. In 1904 Cheif Joseph passed away and according to his doctor it was from a “broken heart”
