T
his, on 13th October, is the anniversary of a ‘great universal celebrity’ having an immense number of fans, surely in millions of billions and more, all over the world, regardless and irrespective of their gender, creed, faith, religion, language, color, race and geographical boundaries. All love him, respect him or even worship him like a god. Some call him with prefix-titles such as ‘Doctor’, some say this man ‘Professor’, some say him ‘Ustad’ or ‘Guru’. Some know this man from the titles conferred upon him by his fans or journalists, such as ‘Shahenshah-e-Qawwali’, ‘Pride of Pakistan’, ‘Superstar of Music’, ‘Messenger of Peace’, ‘The Legend of Music’, ‘A Man Called Qawwali’ and this list goes on and on. Some recognize him as a bulky-bodied and calm-faced idol, lost in his work with serenity, relatively ignorant of his surroundings, looking like Buddha meditating while sitting on a peaceful rock of a lonesome mountain. This celebrity, god, doctor, professor, ustad, guru and idol, is undoubtedly, none other than the legendary “Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan” – the great son of our beloved motherland Pakistan.
Nusrat was born on October 13, 1948. His ancestors migrated from Afghanistan to sub-continent and later to Pakistan in Lyallpur, now Faisalabad, after partition. His father, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, was also a great Qawwal and instrumentalist of his time and took active part in the Freedom Movement by disseminating the message of Allama Iqbal given in his poetry, by performing “Qawwali” – a 600 years old tradition of the family. Nusrat’s real name is “Pervez” and “Peji” in defaced form. His father’s first intention was to make him a doctor or engineer. But Nusrat was very much fascinated by his family business and had great enthusiasm for music. Therefore, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan started to teach him the secrets of music. He acquired expertise in playing Tabla from his father and also some of raags. After the death of his father in 1964, Nusrat entered into the family business actively under the patronage of his real uncles Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan and Ustad Salamat Ali Khan and completed his training. There is a Chinese proverb that “Behind an able man there are always other able men.” Nusrat’s father Ustad Fateh Ali Khan and his uncles Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan and Ustad Salamat Ali Khan and others who took part in the training of Nusrat, were all outstanding and distinguished men of the era. Nusrat made his first appearance felt in the annual Jashn-e-Baharan festival organized by Radio Pakistan. After that Nusrat started to perform Qawwalis along with Ustad Mujahid Mubarak Ali (Nusrat’s cousin and son of Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan) and party. His debut hit in Pakistan was “Haq Ali” that mesmerized a large number of his listeners and made his emergence as a great Qawwal in the history. Afterward Nusrat made great hits, hit-after-hit, his every performance was a real hit.

Nusrat performed, using his versatile style and multitalented legacy, the poetry of Sufis (Kalaam) in Urdu, Hindi, Persian, and especially in Punjabi. He was an immortal performer, singer and presenter. He experimented various modern music instruments, a variety of unbroken chain of sargams and raags that still attract audience of every age and taste. Aafreen Aafreen, Akhian Nu Chain Na Aave, Ishq Da Rutba, Ali Da Malang, Dam Must Qalander, Koi Jaane Koi Na Jaane are a few famous hits from the long list.
An attention-grabbing, groundbreaking and remarkable performance of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was in 1988 in the annual festival arranged and organized by the WOMAD (World of Music, Art and Dance) organization where the best artists of unique expertise were given only 20 minutes to expose their skills and experience. Nusrat started to perform at 11:40 PM but his 20 minutes were prolonged till 5:30 AM. He had to convert every ending into a new beginning, on shouting voices of his immense audience – “Once more!”.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is no more with us physically but he is still in our hearts, in our minds and in our souls like a living-liquid. Callimachus once said, “A good man never dies.” He is still dominating our hearts and is helping us in molding our lives according to the teachings of Islam, in making us a good Muslim in true sense and in knowing the poetry of Sufis attractively. In my opinion, Nusrat is the Alexander of his time, and afterwards of each time, but he is more superior to Alexander, because Alexander ruined countries by defeating and killing people, but, Nusrat did not defeat people instead he won their hearts by what Allah had blessed him with. Nusrat will remain in the hearts of people forever because he is a universal asset. Happy Birthday Nusrat – the great!
