TRAILER NOTES
‘Open your eyes’ is described as a thriller, disturbing, mind bending where as ‘Vanilla sky’ doesn’t describe the type of film in the trailer at all.
‘Open your eyes’ compares it self to be inspired by ‘The matrix’, ‘Total recall’ and ‘The game’, focusing more on telling the audience and describing to the audience the ‘theme’, the ‘genre’ and the unusual twists and turns that take place in the film without revealing them, so the audience know that there are twists and turns in the film. ‘Vanilla sky’ doesn’t do this, it focuses more on getting the audience to know the characters and then break that bond between the audience and the characters by introducing a twist, but the twist isn’t ‘confirmed’ its confusing and makes the audience question what’s going on drawing more attention to the trailer that the ‘Open your eyes’ trailer.
Both trailers talk about dreams and reality in their own ways, again to help pursue the genre and style of the film.
‘Open your eyes’ focuses more on the story, its theme and genre, where as ‘Vanilla sky’ focuses more on ‘selling’ the film with more mini-cliffhangers, boasting about cast and director.
‘Open your eyes’ also tries to sell its as well but not as much as ‘Vanilla sky’ by saying comparisons to other films and also slightly boasts cast as well.
The Essay on “Interpreting The Day the Earth Stood Still for Contemporary Film Audiences” Review
In the article “Interpreting The Day the Earth Stood Still for Contemporary Film Audiences” written in 2008, the Author, Joshua Pardon, writes about the messages that were sent to the American film audience of 1951 through the film The Day the Earth Stood Still, based on a short story by Harry Bates written in 1940. These messages ranged from topics like the societal costs of atomic technology and ...
‘Vanilla sky’ starts with the words ‘open your eyes’ immediately, I think this is to inform people that it is a film that is a remake of ‘Open your eyes’.

In ‘Vanilla sky’ at the start of the trailer it asks a question (to the audience) making the audience think about the answer with ‘what’s going to happen’, ‘what’s this about’ etc, to get people interested in watching the trailer of the film.
In ‘Vanilla sky’ the words on screen are ‘telling’ the audience what to think to get the audience in the ‘zone’ to be in the correct state of mind to be engaged into the trailer. In ‘Open your eyes’ this doesn’t happen, instead a narrator is talking and telling the audience what the films about instead of the audience having to think about it.
‘Vanilla sky’ trailer announces the words ‘open your eyes’ 3 times in important moments (start, end, and important part in-between) again this is to impose that the film is a remake of the original ‘Open your eyes’.
‘Vanilla sky’ announces the big names, cast and crew members to sell the film to the audience. Its more of a Hollywood style than ‘Open your eyes’ as it try’s to get the audience to want to watch the film now to see what happens but ‘Vanilla sky’ does this more than ‘Open your eyes’. In ‘Open your eyes’ they do leave a cliffhanger, but its left to short of a cliffhanger. We don’t know enough as an audience to know what the cliffhanger is, but both films do this to help sell the movie.
In both films the same actress plays the same role with the same name (Sophia), again, I think this a move to help the audience realize its a remake of ‘Open your eyes’.
Both films rely on surprises and twists which make the film a must see and interesting.
Both films have the exact same story. The story of the remake had to be the same otherwise the structure of the twists and surprises may have failed otherwise, in regards to being kept understandable and to pursue the story correctly.
The Essay on Key Themes and Ideas in “Eye The Sky” by Tim Winton
That Eye The Sky, written by Tim Winton, thoroughly explores the themes of love, family and friendship. The most important thing in Ort's life is his family, especially after he looses the friendship of fat cherry, who had been his best friend for his entire life. Ort does not always understand his family, but he loves them unconditionally. The Flack family is held together by Sam Flack, Ort's ...
The only differences are the setting some names and the cast and slightly the style. I think this was done by the director to make the film ‘new’ and a little different from the origional (‘Open your eyes’).
Both films come across as ‘a romantic comedy’ until half way through where twists and surprises make the films there own and original.
PTO
‘Vanilla sky’ come across to be a remake-for-money kind of film. With its famous cast and crew and own Hollywood style film, shots and editing. ‘Vanilla sky’ seemed to be more focused on ‘how it looks’ as opposed to the original which was heavily relied on its story alone and not so much its cast, crew or even how it looks. ‘Vanilla sky’ was made-to-sell, and made-to-make-money where as ‘Open your eyes’ wasn’t as much.
