The Institute
National Institute of Fashion Technology was set up in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. It has emerged as the premier Institute of Design, Management and Technology, developing professionals for taking up leadership positions in fashion business in the emerging global scenario. The Institute is a pioneer in envisioning and evolving fashion business education in the country through a network of fifteen professionally managed centres at Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kannur, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Patna, Raebareli and Shillong. NIFT has set academic standards and excelled in thought leadership by providing a pool of creative genius and technically competent professionals. The Institute provides a common platform for fashion education, research and training. NIFT Act 2006 published in the Gazette of India on 14th July, 2006 confers Statutory Status on NIFT. The Act came into effect from 1st April, 2007. The President of India is the ‘Visitor’ of the Institute under the Act. The Act empowers the Institute to award degrees and other academic distinctions. NIFT is the first premier Institute in the world to award its own Degrees in the field of fashion education.
TEACHING METHODOLOGY Teaching at the Institute involves a cohesive, contextual and nurturing environment for learning. The emphasis is on professional development providing a competitive edge by using standardised pedagogy and teaching methodology. It also entails sharing of work as well as learning processes with peers and faculty, whose feedback and guidance is crucial to the student’s understanding, development, and maturity. Students undertake classroom and workshop assignments, conduct field studies, make presentations, participate in group discussions and seminars, and are encouraged to develop industry linkages. The students get an opportunity to work in an intellectually stimulating environment on projects focusing on integrative abilities that use skills ranging from technical expertise to creative exposure and conceptualisation. The interactive mode of teaching is supplemented by latest visual aids and IT tools. EVALUATION The evaluation system aims at evaluating student’s knowledge, skills and encourages self improvement. It also closely monitors student’s evolution as a competent professional. The evaluation pattern focuses at the entire gamut of learning and corresponding evaluation tools like task-based assignments, interactive industry projects, internships, research and written examinations throughout the academic calendar.

Multiple juries in the end of the semester, graduation project, design collection and viva-voice etc., comprising of academicians and industry professionals, judge student’s work and provide qualitative evaluation and feedback in terms of overall growth and performance. The evaluation tools also assess the student’s ability to correlate and apply learning from various inputs as a demonstrated outcome through the work of a student as well as levels of proficiency in individual/specific modules during the semester. ALUMNI NIFT has to its credit more than 8500 Alumni since its inception in 1986, who are working with the industry in key decision making positions and are instrumental in shaping the future of fashion business as change agents in India and abroad. Alumni are working at various levels as Entrepreneurs, Brand Managers, Quality Controllers, Designers, Fashion Coordinators, Merchandisers, Production Managers, Marketing Heads etc. in leading domestic and international organisations. Some of the alumni have become successful brands themselves. The design alumni have presented their work on the ramps of Milan, Paris, New York and other fashion capitals. NIFT Alumni are also active in taking their knowledge to the grassroot levels, working with NGOs and craft pockets across India to bring together the craftsman and modern technology.
The NIFT Alumni Association provides a platform for an active mutually beneficial contribution to the alma mater. NIFT AND THE INDUSTRY The education programmes at NIFT are extensively integrated with fashion business. The intense and dynamic interaction between the industry and academics provides requisite insight and appreciation of business diktats. Internship and industry visits as well as real life projects, seminars and interactions provide opportunities for students to appreciate and understand the working of the industry. NIFT conducts ‘Continuing Education’ programmes, in-house training programmes, seminars and workshops for the industry on emerging concerns and current developments. The Institute also undertakes research and consultancy projects for the industry with its expertise in design, management and technology at strategic and operational levels. AWARDS AND RECOGNITION NIFT students at all centres are encouraged to participate in a number of international and national events and competitions. The students have won laurels in several prestigious international competitions like Mittelmoda Premio, Crespi and ITS, Italy; Gifu and Asia Makuhari Grand Prix, Japan; Asia Pacific Young Designers, Hong Kong; World Gold Council’s Swaranjali, World of Wearable Art, New Zealand; Academia di costume e diModa, Rome, Italy; Arts of Fashion Foundation USA; WHO Photography competition ‘Save the World’, Cairo. National level competitions like The Debut, Making of Cut, Lets Design also provide design opportunities to students as do brands like Shoppers Stop, Cotton Council, Reliance, Wills Lifestyle, Burn, Swarovski, etc. Meritorious students from NIFT have been awarded scholarships for further studies by prestigious organisations like Raymond, Groz Beckert, etc. NIFT honours students in three categories of Awards which are conferred at the time of the Convocation: l Academic Performance Award in each Best programme at each NIFT centre l Academic Excellence with Community Service Performance: one student at each NIFT centre l All Round Performanc : one student at each Best NIFT centre All three awards carry a citation on a designed certificate, a gold medal and a cash component.

These awards are decided by an external jury and given to students getting highest marks in the corresponding categories of evaluation criteria. CURRENT AND FUTURE ENDEAVOURS NIFT is facilitating the flow of the fashion industry and fashion education through a number of initiatives. There is now a focus on new areas of opportunity such as IT empowered fashion education, global sourcing and buying, business process outsourcing and intellectual property rights with the aim of creating new age fashion organisations. To integrate curriculum inputs and needs of the craft sector, NIFT undertakes a cluster initiative involving diagnostic surveys, design collaboration and documentation. Each centre of NIFT coordinates this initiative in their particular region with the involvement of all students and faculty of the centre. The National Institute of Fashion Technology, a premier academic institute of design, management and technology, aims at establishing the benchmark for the quality of professionals that go into the fashion industry. The Institute provides comprehensive and state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment to impart both practical and theoretical training.
The facilities and services offered to the students allow them the freedom to experiment and generate creative ideas. The classrooms are equipped with audiovisual equipment like LCD, Slide Projector, Television etc. The Institute invests in the latest equipment to acquaint students with the latest manufacturing technology. The laboratories are equipped with requisite machinery for garment construction, pattern making, dyeing, printing etc. NIFT realises the significance of the role of Information Technology in modern technical education. The IT infrastructure provided to support academics in NIFT is an object of envy for any other fashion institute in India. The Institute also understands the value of information in fashion education and has developed a network of well-stocked Resource Centres at all centres. DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY In the new millennium, the success of fashion professionals rests on their ability to integrate fashion and information technology in a meaningful way. The Department of Information Technology is playing a key role in providing an IT-enabled learning environment, with the objective of developing computersavvy, well-rounded professionals.
The Department of Information Technology works closely with other departments to integrate IT into the course curriculum and update the IT content on a regular basis. Each NIFT centre now has an independent, fully operational Department of Information Technology with qualified and experienced IT professionals. The computer labs are well equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software like Macintosh server and workstation, Pentium Computers, Plotters, Digitisers, Image Scanners, Wide Format Printers, Sound Mixers, Digital Cameras, etc. NIFT has set up a campus wide fibre 100 mbps switched network backbone that connects all the departments. The CAD software for Apparel Design, Textile Design and Accessory Design are extensively used as part of the curriculum in addition to Graphics Design, Animation, 2D/3D Modeling, Photo Imaging and Editing, Statistical Analysis and Market Research etc. Department of Information Technology is constantly upgrading and encashing new ideas of education. RESOURCE CENTRES In the 21st century Information is the most important resource and Knowledge Management is the most crucial function in an organisation. The Resource Centre (RC) in each NIFT centre provides the necessary infrastructure to collate and disseminate this critical input.
The Network of NIFT Resource Centres is the only Fashion Information System in India serving the fashion professionals, would-be professionals and fashion educators. Its integrated collection of print, visual and creative materials resources is the only systematically documented source of information available in India for study of international and contemorary Indian fashion. The system is a decentralised network, partially automated and is coordinated by the National Resource Centre (NRC) at NIFT, New Delhi. The Resource Centres also provide information services to the design community, industry practitioners and entrepreneurs. The Resource Centre at NIFT, New Delhi was established in 1987. The Resource Centres at Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai were established in 1995. The Resource Centres at Bengaluru and Raebareli were set up in 1997 and 2007 respectively and Bhopal, Kannur, Patna and Shillong were set up in 2008. The Resource Centre at Kangra was set up in 2009 and that of Bhubaneswar and Jodhpur were set up in 2010.

Services All the RCs use library management software for collection management and dissemination of information. These offer numerous proactive information services. The online libraries operate on multi-user library management software. The highlights of the systems are Article Index, Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) and Barcode based Circulation System. Reference Service Highly qualified professional staff members are at reference desks. Besides the print collection, the staff also browses the Internet for reference queries. Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) RCs using multi-user version of the library management software offer the catalogues of all print and non-print collections online. All RCs are in the process of offering the same service. Bibliographic Service Subject bibliographies on topics relevant to the fashion industry are available online and print out of bibliographies on any topic is provided on demand. Indexing Service An important research tool for easy retrieval of journal literature on fashion and related areas in the NIFT library is the online periodicals index. Current Awareness Service Lists of new additions to books and audiovisual collections are available online. Circulation Service All RCs offer circulation services for selective collections of recommended reading materials. The bar-coded charging
system in some of the RCs has ensured data accuracy and fast check-in & check-out at the circulation counter. Reprographic Service Selective reprographic service is provided to the users at all RCs. Thematic displays and exhibitions are regular features of the activities of RCs. Access through web is being provided to the services of RCs for effective use and greater access. Digitisation of Valuable Resource Collection A futuristic programme is that of converting the valuable print and non-print collections into electronic format. The entire reference collections of diploma project reports, audio-visual materials, textiles and costumes spread across the network of RCs are being digitised into an interactive multimedia format.
