What was it like having your first teacher of the day, as your homeroom teacher? What was it like being a student in Mrs. Burtis- Taylor’s Honors Biology class? Stepping into Mrs. “BT’s Zone”, as she would sometimes call it, had its good days and bad. Back then, it seemed like the bad outweighed the good. I learned a lot from Mrs. Burtis-Taylor even though I was acting hard-headed most of the time in class. She always said “From the time you walk in the door until the time the bell rings, I am going to teach you all”. It was Mrs. Burtis-Taylor’s favorite phrase, and she meant every word she said too. At the end of class, as her students were walking out the door she would continue to ask them questions like; “What is mRNA, how can you describe what a phospholipid bi-layer looks like?” She made sure her students got a full day of teaching from her.
Mrs. Burtis-Taylor taught 10th grade Biology for many years. In fact, she taught for so long that she even taught my older sister who has not been in high school in over 20 years. That is a very long time to spend your whole life teaching at a dump of a place that was referred to as a high school. She made sure she knew all her students on a professional level and some even on a personal level, including me. “Reginald, I’m pretty sure your mother and aunts would not like that attitude of you are giving me” she said to me a few times. Mrs. Burtis-Taylor knew she could get students to do anything just by threating to tell on them.
The Essay on Mrs Dragelin Timothy Class Tim
. Background Information Timothy is the student that I have chosen to develop this portfolio on. Timothy is seven-year-old child in first grade at the elementary school that I do my fieldwork at. Timothy has not yet been selected for special education, as it is his first year in school. In the classroom Timothy struggles with most of what he is asked to do. He has very poor concentration, and has ...
I never knew how hard learning about DNA and carbohydrates could be until my mother requested me to be enrolled in Mrs. Burtis- Taylor’s 5th block class. The fact that she was homeroom also my homeroom teacher made being her class even worse. When the bells would ring, all my friends would leave and go to their next class while I was stuck in the same room for another hour and thirty minutes. Mrs. Burtis-Taylor would always try to make me study in homeroom before her class started, but I would leave the classroom as soon as her back was turned
My first day in Mrs. Burtis-Taylor’s class was perhaps the worst day of my whole entire high school career. The first day of class the students were already learning about all the branches of Biology, and Mrs. Burtis-Taylor pounded them with notes. When I made it to class I was late, and I didn’t even care about being late. It was my first day in her class so I assumed that everything was going to be okay and boy was I wrong. “Why are you late Mr. Freeman and why isn’t your shirt tucked in”? Mrs. Burtis-Taylor shouted. Her voice was so sharp that it made me freeze for about a second, and I quickly scampered to my seat and put my shirt in.
Mrs. Burtis-Taylor would always make the class read aloud before she displayed the notes from her Power Points. I never read because I would always fall asleep about mid-way through class. “Stand up Mr. Freeman”! She would shout. “Go stand near Sheldon since you cannot keep your eyes open”. I was so embarrassed to stand near a human skeleton named Sheldon, but I had to since I could not afford another referral.
Mrs. Burtis-Taylor’s teaching technique was very effective and it showed on every test. When she was teaching, she had the tendency to speed through her Power Points, assuming that we got all the important parts from it slide. If she felt like we didn’t understand she constantly repeats herself to make sure we understood. “Hello, Hello, Ladies and Gentlemen do you understand what this slide is talking about”? She would say, and the whole class would shout “Yes Mrs. B.T.”
The Essay on Mrs Pierce Eliza Lady Made
How could a lowly flower girl make such a drastic change into a refined lady? She could not have possibly pulled it off herself; she would need help. Thus is the case in the play Pygmalion, by G. B. Shaw. The poor flower girl, Eliza, is turned into a 'duchess,' so to speak, by the other characters in the play. The characters responsible for the change in Eliza throughout the play were Henry ...
About mid-way through class, I began to dose off. Mrs. Burtis-Taylor was moving too fast for me so I laid my head down for what seemed like 5 seconds. “See me after class Reginald, I think we are going to have to call your mother since you can’t stay up in class” Mrs. Burtis-Taylor said. When she said that, I became very nervous because I knew my mom was going to be furious with me. Mrs. Burtis-Taylor told me to stay after class.
After class, Mrs. Burtis-Taylor gave me a long talk about misbehaving and how it could lead me down the wrong path in life. “I remember picking up a newspaper and looking forward to seeing your name in the section for the students who made Honor Roll”, she would always tell me and some of my other friends. I really didn’t take her word to heart until a few years later, but at that time I knew she was right. I just was not ready to be a good student yet. I realized that Mrs. Burtis-Taylor was only doing her job. She was not being mean to me, but instead she was only doing what she thought was best. I knew then that Mrs. Burtis-Taylor really cared about her job and her students. She loved teaching and now I see why she taught for all those years. Mrs. Burtis-Taylor could have easily sent me to In-School Suspension like she did the other boys, but I guess she seen something in me that was really special.
The next couple of weeks, I came to her class ready to learn. Mrs. Burtis-Taylor noticed my improvements in her class, but would still fuss at me from time to time about my attitude and clothes outside her class. She often said “If Mr. Freeman can pass this simple lab, I’m sure the rest of you can”. Back then, it seemed like the bad days outweighed the good days, and yet I still enjoyed Mrs. Burtis –Taylor’s teachings. She helped me out a lot in school and I thank her for all that she has done.
