The story of Anakin Skywalker is a classic story of good versus evil. Anakin becomes so warped by emotion he slowly changes his path from becoming a Jedi master and transform into the Sith Lord’s apprentice. Anakin’s journey has been contemplated by many on seeing what made him transform from the dark side. Through the teachings of The Bhagavad Gita and Seneca’s book “On Anger” one can see that attachment and fear was the core reason of his transformation to the dark side.
Anakin was once a young boy conceived by midichlorians. Midichlorians are the essence of the force which resides in all living things. This alone tells us that Anakin was born a powerful being. Anakin was born in Tattooine and grew up with his mother as a humble slave. In Episode one his life was flipped when Qui- Gon Ginn found him by fate. He took Anakin away from his mother and went to train him as a Jedi. The prophecy said that He took Anakin away from his mother and went to train him as a Jedi. The prophecy said that Anakin would bring balance to the force. The council initially sensed great fear in him. Anakin was raised to become a Jedi anyway because of the prophesy that foretold of someone who would destroy the Sith, this was supposed to be Anakin. As Anakin grows older he doesn’t listen to one of the most important rules to being a Jedi, “being free from the emotions that subvert reason”. This is a stoic /Jedi trait that Anakin does not obtain. The Jedi are told specifically not to have feelings for anything. The first time one sees Anakin lets his emotions effect his actions is in episode two when his love for Padme is seen. It is impossible for Anakin to eliminate his emotions to advert reason. Padme was the Queen of Naboo in episode one and a senator in episode two and three. The become married in secrecy at the end of episode two and find out that she is pregnant in the end of episode three. Anakin sees the future in his dream and becomes very fearful when he sees Padme dying in childbirth. “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering”. Fear is the ultimate reason why Anakin transforms to the dark side.
The Essay on Fear One Emotion School
Every person, everywhere, with no exceptions has experienced fear. Fear, to be afraid, has hit us all, whether it was fear of failing, or fear for your own personal safety. Fear is what keeps us on our alert edge. It kept you from jumping off the high dive when you were a child for fear you would get injured, and it kept you up late studying for fear of failing. It is the realization of ...
In The Bhagavad Gita hate and lust are talked about. “Hate and lust for things of nature have their roots in man’s lower nature. Let him not fall under their power: they are the two enemies in his path”. Anakin has both of these, he lusts for Padme and is angry that there is a possibility she might die in the process of childbirth. Lust is different than love; lust is a passionate desire or craving. Anakin feels as though he possess her in a way. “From attraction arises desire, the lust of possession, and this leads to passion, to anger”. This high level of passion is not part of the Jedi way. The fear Anakin has for Padme is initially what caused his downfall. As Seneca says “In the same way, the mind, if it throws itself into anger, love and other affections, is not allowed to restrain the impulse. It is bound to be swept along and driven to the bottom by its own weight and by the natural downward tendency of failing:”. He cannot help the emotions that he has for Padme causing him to transform to the darkside.
William O. Stephens talks about vice and virtue in his article, Stoicism in the Stars : Yoda, the Emperor, and the Force. An example of vice would be the emotions Anakin feels that corrupt him and make him act in a selfish manner. An example of virtue would be timelessness or patience. A Jedi realizes there is a time for everything and they have no control over that time. It would not be in accordance with nature if they altered anything for personal gain. The vice that drives the power of the dark side is anger. Seneca’s On Anger is a great template to help us understand why no good can become of anger. Quoting directly from his article On Anger, Seneca says, “Anger changes all things from their best and justest condition into the opposite”. This is a good example of what happened to Anakin Skywalker. He allowed his feelings for Padme to evolve into a vice. Protection became his primary objective after foreseeing her death in childbirth. When he realized he could not protect her the way he was he became so angry that he turned to whatever means he could. Anger is a physical change. In Episode three one witnesses the physical changes in Anakin. A good example would be when he was told to go and kill all Jedi that are the temple; his eyes slowly turn a yellow tint. The Emperor told Anakin of a power that his master had achieved, he could stop the people he loved from dying. Anakin desired that power in fear of Padme’s death and soon hurt many people, including the one person he loved the most, Padme.

In the end of Episode three there is an awesome battle scene between Anakin and Obi-Won on the planet Mustafar. This is a planet with a lot of fire and lava; many people would compare it to hell. During the fight between the two Obi-Won tries to salvage what good is left in Anakin and show him that the dark side is truly evil. Anakin now believes that the Jedi are evil. Obi-Won takes the high ground but Anakin feels like he has more power than he has ever before so he decides to still attack. In the process of this Anakin proceeds to get his legs cut off at the knee and lands in hot embers. He slowly begins to burn and bleed to death. Obi-Won reminds him that he was to be the chosen one, to bring balance to the force not destroy it. For the first time in the movies Obi-Won shows emotion and says “you were my brother Anakin, I loved you”. He then leaves to tend to Padme who is very close to having birth with what she doesn’t know are twins. Meanwhile the Emperor seeks out Anakin and begins to transform Anakin to what he will be, a robotic Darth Vader. As the scene is shown where he is being transformed you also see the scene of Padme giving birth. When Darth Vader is almost complete Padme is almost dead.
The moment when this happens is a huge part of the story. Anakin Skywalker who was the slave boy from Tattooine is now Darth Vader- more machine than man. Once this occurs one sees that emotion has taken over Anakin. Emotion is something that everyone on the world feels, therefore now he is not a Jedi he may show emotion and is more of a natural human while being Darth Vader. The dark side conforms to him instead of him conforming to the light side. He soon realizes that he in fact killed Padme and did not save her. He then shows and incredible amount of pain and agony that a Jedi would not feel. In his mind if he were to rule the galaxy this would not have happened, he losing what he “loved” the most. Pain is all Anakin has left. Everything he cared about he has destroyed.
The Term Paper on The Role Of Emotion In Racial Prejudice
Racial prejudice was defined by Allport , one of the first researchers in psychology to investigate the issue, as “an aversive or hostile attitude towards a person who belongs to a group, simply because he or she belongs to that group, and is therefore presumed to have the objectionable qualities ascribed to that group. It is an antipathy based on a faulty and inflexible ...
In the end Anakin had obtained all of the power he could have ever wanted, even though he ended up not being able to save Padme. He thrived on his emotions which followed the path of the dark side which allowed you to use your emotions as strength. While Anakin is one with the dark side of the force he is allowed to be more alive with pain and anger rather than being held back by the light side of the force.
