Does Society Base Beauty on Symmetry?
What defines a being as being beautiful (or not) is a question that has been puzzled on by civilization for the past two millennia, if not longer. Pythagoras and Euclid were the first of many to define human beauty, ascribing it to the geometry of the Golden Ratio.
Recent studies have shown that people of this century and even previous centuries define beauty based off of one’s physical symmetry. This study has found that people are looking at one’s facial features, such as a man’s jaw line to define what they find “beautiful”. Webster’s dictionary defines beauty as “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit”.
Physical symmetry is subconsciously perceived as a reflection of a person’s youth, fertility, health, and strength. A person’s symmetry is decided upon inside of the mother’s womb. Lack of nourishment and essential vitamins cause physical disfigurations to the unborn person or persons.
Research in recent years on ‘blind dating’ and on dating sites have shown that a large portion of dates based on personality fail after the two people on the date view one another’s physical appearance. What does that say about man kind?
Research on animals has shown that they too find their mates based on the others physical appearance. The Discovery Channel has a video and articles in which this notion was examined using finches. The video and articles showed that a male finch with bright or bold colors has a higher chance of having a beautiful mate, or any mate at all for that matter. So human or animal, is beauty based on physical symmetry?
