The Event that Shocked the Nation
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th president of the United States. He was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald on November 22nd, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. The Death of United States president John F. Kennedy was caused by his political views on civil rights, the space race, and the Vietnam War, and it shocked a Nation forever.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29th, 1917, in Brookline, Massachusetts. He was born to Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald, and was their 2nd son. His family came to the United States from Ireland with very little money. After making a name for themselves in Boston by becoming businessmen and Politicians, the Kennedy family thrived. John made his way around the eastern part of the U.S. multiple times when he was in his youth, visiting states such as New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. (Foundation, 2001) He attended Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and majored in Political Philosophy. After college, he became a lieutenant in the United States Navy. He was named the commander of a few small boats that were to fight the Japanese. His boat was damaged by the enemy, so him and the remaining eleven survivors swam to a nearby island and were rescued a week later.
After the war, Kennedy decided to run for political office. He made his way into the U.S. Congress, and later became part of the U.S. Senate. During his long run in the United States Senate, he married Jacqueline Bouvier. In 1957, they had their first child, whom they named Caroline. In 1960, he began his long campaign to become President of the United States. He chose Lyndon B. Johnson to run with him. The soon to be Vice President was from Texas, which is the same State where Kennedy was Assassinated. On November 8, 1960, the youngest democrat to run won the election. He was also the first Catholic. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was named the 35th President of the United States of America. (Ellen, 2001)

He wasn’t the official President until he was sworn into office on January 20th, 1961. (Foundation, 2001) During his Inaugural Address, he gave a speech that the country wouldn’t soon forget.
In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shank from this responsibility – I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The speech that President Kennedy gave at his Inaugural address is regarded as one of the most famous of all time. He let his fellow Americans know that he would do anything for his country to keep it running smoothly. There was suspicion that Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of the Soviet Union, was supplying Cuba with nuclear Missiles. President Kennedy found this disturbing, since Cuba was so close to the United States. They could easily fire missiles and strike the United States. President Kennedy had to take some sort of action, so he decided to set up a naval blockade that would cut off the Soviet Union ships. After several days of waiting, the Soviet Union removed the missiles from Cuba, and America would not invade Cuba. President Kennedy’s actions could have saved a possible nuclear war, so he is thought highly of for the decisions he made.

President Kennedy supported the civil rights movement, and was more than just against segregation. He believed that all men were created equal, along with Martin Luther King Jr. and other Civil Rights leaders. President Kennedy did not put civil rights first though. He took a long time deciding what to do about it, and putting his plan into action. Kennedy was struggling to keep all the states happy and make sure racism didn’t bring violence.
President Kennedy flew to Dallas, Texas, on November 21, 1963 to greet the people of Texas and give speeches. The President, his wife, Texas State Governor John Connally and his wife rode through Dallas in an open limousine. Nellie Connally, the governor’s wife, said “Mr. President, you certainly can’t say that Dallas doesn’t love you.” (The President Has Been Shot!, 2003) Minutes later, three gunshots were fired. The first hit President Kennedy in the throat. The next would hit and injure Governor Connally, and the final bullet would take the presidents life. Screams were let out and everyone took cover. Secret Service agents rushed to aid the president, but there was nothing they could for him. United States President John F. Kennedy was pronounced dead at two o’clock P.M. on November 21, 1963. The country was in shock. They wanted to avenge the president, but didn’t know how to.
Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States aboard Air Force one. He would go on to be re-elected in 1964. The criminal who killed the president of the United States was still on the run. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested in a movie theatre in Dallas after the shooting of a police officer. He was later credited with the killing of President John F. Kennedy. Oswald worked at the Texas School Book Depository, the same building where the three deadly shots were fired. Authorities found Oswald’s Italian Carcano rifle and three empty bullet shells with it. (Alternative Assassination Theories for John F. Kennedy, 2011)
The U.S. was positive that they found the man that had assassinated their beloved President. No one will ever know for sure if it was Oswald or not, because on November 24th, 1964, while being transferred to the county jail, Lee Harvey Oswald was fatally wounded by a gunshot from local night club owner Jack Ruby. Lee Harvey Oswald was declared dead, and Jack Ruby was charged with 1st degree murder. Whether Oswald was the true killer remains a mystery to this day. (Lee Harvey Oswald, 2001)

The President’s funeral was held at Catholic Church in Washington D.C. His entire family, as well as the United States of America, mourned the day of his funeral. The eternal flame sits next to his gravesite. His family is now buried with him as well. He is buried in Arlington Cemetery in Washington D.C.
The assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy seemed unbelievable, and still does to this day. He was a war hero, a father, a leader of a nation, and will be missed forever. (Flick, 2003 ) His death was caused by his Political views on the space race, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Vietnam War, and shocked a Nation forever.
