THOUGHT ON READING DAVID COPPERFIED
It is a story dealing with the life of an ordinary person from childhood to maturity. It is called David Copperfied. When I read this novel for the first time, I was attracted by not only Dickens’ spirit and humorous language, but also the lifelike and abundant character of every personage in the novel.
The protagonist in this novel, David Copperfied is an independent and diligent person. His father had been dead for six months before he was born, and seven years later, his mother married Mr. Edward Murdstone. Because David cannot bear the stepfather’s thrashing for his studies and torture, he was sent to a boarding school. Later ,to avoid the maltreatment, David ran away to his aunt’s home. His aunt, Betsey Trotwood agreed to bring him up and sent him to school .After graduating, David married the beautiful Dora who is David’s teacher’s daughter, but she died from a miscarriage early in their marriage. With deep sorrow, David went to Australia. After returning, he married Agnes, who had always loved him, and then they lived in a happy life .
The plot in the novel is just like this. I even had a strange feeling that I have been to another world when I read this novel . It seems that the whole story is like a parasitical dream, where there was happiness, anger, grief and joy. I’ll never forget the diligence and innocence of David. I’ll never forget the lovely servant Peggotty. I’ll never forget the harsh cruel and ferocious Mr. Murdstone. I’ll never forget the hypocritical and unctuous Steerforth, certainly, and Betsey, DoraAgnes,etc. All these characters leave the unforgettable impression on readers. As the time goes by , these images will always be remembered by us and not be diluted by anything.

It is not difficult to find out that the protagonist’s growth road is bumpy and indignant. In the meantime, we also find there are so many true friends around the protagonist. They always help David when he meet some difficulties and danger, then he was safe and was able to escape from the nether world time and time again. What we can feel obviously in the course of the novel is the elegant heart or it is called human nature .
The words might air-dried. The book might be corroded. However, human nature can exist forever. There are many living characters in the novel who are always existent and glorious, no matter it is in 19th century or 21st century. In a way the personages in the novel will be alive in the world all the time and won’t pass away It is the reason why there are so many people affirm David Coppefield the most successful novel among all the novels written by Dickens.
There are two forms of human nature in the world .One is called beauty, while the other is called corruption. Obviously, they are opposing .C.E.M.JOAD once said, “If the world is not merely a bad joke ,life a velar flare amid the cool radiance of the stars ,and existence an empty laugh braying across the mysteries; If these intimations of as something behind and beyond are not evil humour born of indigestion ,or whimpers sent by the devil to mick and madden us ,if ,in a word ,beauty means something ,yet we must seek to interpret the meaning .Only thing we can do for the graceful human nature is to develop and let it lead the entire human nature in spirit.”
The diligent and innocent David was always striving, all the twists and turns or ups and downs his experiences have fully shown bitterness and difficulty that ordinary people seek survival under the abominable circumstances. During this course, it is ready to reveal the graceful human nature in David’s heart.Maybe many readers can associate other people with the true world. Some of them are similar to David, they are diligent ,kind and never give up, and they are the most beautiful and respectable person in our society.

So they are hateful and selfish. We can also find some people who are similar to Uriah Heep in our society .In the novel, Uriah serves a foil to David and contrasts David’s characteristics of innocence, compassion and kindness with his ugly human nature .In order to hurt David, Uriah wished to marry Agnes. When he cooperated with David ,he always wants to make him breakdown and cause him to stain the excessive drinking abuse. And he embezzled public funds .We can obviously realize that David is the symbol of striving and Uriah is the symbol of corruption .In the real world, there are many people tow the hind leg which we progress .Sometimes they cheat others ,hurt friends and then they receive the achievements and splendid which ordinary people will not want at any time .
Many people on reading the book think this book is quite true, including me .Because of Dickens’ colorful attention and his comprehension to the human nature ,a lot of places in the plot have reflected that how diversiform and complex the real word is .There are varieties of people around us, among whom there are men and women ,elders and children. In the mean time, some of them are elegant, some are ugly ——-actually ,no one is equal to avoid this phenomenon.
However, in my opinion, we should always remember the elegant human nature, develop it and let it lead the entire human nature. On the other hand, for the ugly human nature ,it should be forbidden all the time .Eventually, let our elegant human nature become a vular flare amid the radiant society ,until forever.
