Many events through the years 1919 – 1933 handicapped the effectiveness of the government of Germany, for example, the hyperinflation effected the government on many grounds as the value of their currency fell as well as the public being angry that the Treaty allowed this to happen. The signing of the Treaty of Versailles also effected the government as the lost a lot support as the majority of the nation were angry at them as they believed that they didn’t need to sign the treaty. Other factors that contributed to handicapped the government were the threat from the extreme right and left as they were gaining support from the public therefore it was becoming easier for them to possibly overthrow the constitution. A principal threat to the effectiveness of Germany’s government was the threat from the extreme right and the left. The parties in the extreme right were gaining supporters and all wanted to gain power over Germany. The DNVP were also well placed to seize power by force as they had support of the officer corps of the German army and were backed up by a large number of right – winged paramilitary organisations formed in the early 1920s like the Steel Helmets. They also had the power to influence the public through media as a prominent member of the DNVP, Hugenberg, owned newspapers and film studios across Germany. This threatened the effective government as there was a constant threat from the DNVP that had supported and from the Reichstag elections in 1920, 10% of the vote. There was also a threat from the left as the members of Germanys conservative elites were opposed to the constitution as they resented the loss of power and status they enjoyed before Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles which they regarded as theirs by right. They also saw the Weimar republic as handiwork of those they regarded as the worst elements in German society like Catholics and Jews as well as being convinced that it was the Weimar politicians that were to blame for Germany defeat in 1918. This effected the government because the Weimar constitution didn’t have full support inside parliament which would make passing laws and doing that the constitution wanted to do difficult.

The Treaty of Versailles also handicapped the government of Germany as many Germans blamed the democratic politicians for the loss of the war. This lead to the ‘stab in the back’ myth which falsely portrayed the cause of the German defeat in the war. When the treaty was signed, this caused outrage throughout Germany and was widely reviled a dictated peace because as part of the treaty, Germany had to restrict their army to 100,000 men and have only six battleships. This handicapped the government because lack of public support for the democracy and in the 1920 elections, the support for the Weimer Constitution feel to 45% of the German population, this was a problem because other parties were getting votes and public supports which could mean that the Weimer Constitution could easily be over thrown which attempted to happen in 1920 where the far right tried to overthrow the republic by force, fortunately for the republic, Kapp and Luttwitz failed to gain support from others who were anti – republican and SPD – led general strike in defence of the Republic also contributed to the Kapp Putsch’s uprisings failure. The economic problems in Germany the years 1919 – 1933 handicapped the effectiveness of the German government because the German public were angry at the constitution as the inflation happened because Germany had to pay off the war so they borrowed and printed off more money. This then lead to the suffering of the German people as the cost of living rose and by 1923, when prices were higher than wages, working class families struggled to by food, as a result there was serious unrest within the poorer parts of Germany and major cities went on strike, hunger riots and looting. The inflation did cause parties wanting to seize the country but all lacked organisation and support. The economic problems did handicap the German government because with the state of the country at the time, the constitution could easily be over thrown as now people weren’t just angry about the signing of the Treaty of Versailles but that the signing caused the inflation therefore, as mentioned before, the constitution was becoming less and less supported by the public and they started looking for other parties to support.
The Nature of the Weimar constitution did handicap the effectiveness of the government as the constitution has been criticised for giving too much power to the President under articles 25 and 48. This changed the nature of the government thus handicapping it because it wasn’t becoming as democratic as promised to the public. Also, proportional representation has been condemned for creating a fragmenting party as it was difficult to form durable coalition governments and within which small extremist parties could gain representation and expose as there were twenty separate coalition governments in the constitution. The nature of the Weimar constitution handicapped the government of Germany as the government couldn’t form a British –style democracy which was what the constitution – makers were aiming for.
To conclude, the German government was handicapped in the years 1919 – 1933 by a lot of issues. However, the nature of the Weimar constitution was not the biggest handicap but more the Treaty of Versailles as before the constitution began, most of the public were already angered about the outcome of the treaty therefore they were looking for an alternative government and didn’t trust the constitution.
