Uniforms are better
An ongoing controversy in American Education is school uniforms. Proponents argue that school uniforms encourage discipline, help students resist peer pressure to buy trendy clothes, help identify intruders in school, diminish economic and social barriers between students, and increase a sense of belonging and school pride. On the other hand, the opponents contend believe school uniforms violate the right to freedom of expression, make students a target for bullies from other schools, are a financial burden for poor families, and are difficult to enforce in public schools. Mark Twain once remarked, “Clothes make the man.” Can school clothes really make you change the way you present yourself in school? On one hand, some people believe that uniforms allow students to respect one another and take school more seriously, and also to reduce crime and help with security issues. On the other hand some people raise the question about uniforms conflicting with one’s self expression. All in all it comes down to the real question: Are uniforms better?
Proponents of school uniforms argue that among other benefits, school uniforms can make schools safer, improve attendance, and raise academic achievement. A 2005 study indicates that some high school uniforms in Ohio may have improved graduation and attendance rates. Former President Clinton said in his March 1996 speech: “”If it means that the school rooms will be more orderly and more disciplined, and that our young people will learn to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside, instead of what they’re wearing on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear uniforms.” Propenents have observed that the adoption of school uniforms create safer schools, improve discipline, and enhance the learning environment. There have been several successful programs applied during the past few years, with the Long Beach, California program being by far the most widely reviewed and written about. This program began in 1994, with dramatic results being effective on how the uniform policy works, just with in the first year. The first year alone they saw a 43% reduction in suspensions, 54% fewer fights, a 70% reduction in substance abuse, over 20% fewer cases of weapons possession and robbery, and an over 50% reduction in reports of battery against employees. Other school systems nationwide likewise report the same statistics. As well as with the uniform policy, there should also be a successful program in enforce this policy. Choosing the best style of the garment should involve students, parents, administration, and teachers. Garments should be affordable, the uniform should provide seasonal options, the program should be mandatory system wide, a recycling program should be in effect, and also accommodate student’s religious beliefs.
Adopting a School Uniform Policy
... our educational program to maintain its integrity, promote student unity, and improve the safety of our school, I propose that the school uniform code read ... school uniform policy. This assistance can come in many forms. One, schools can solicit donations from businesses in order to provide students with these clothes. ...
Opponents present a very different set of arguments. The most common proposed is based on research determining a casual relationship between uniforms and discipline or uniforms and student achievement. In June 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s decision affirming a Vermont student’s right to wear a T-shirt depicting President Bush surrounded by drug and alcohol images. The school suspended the student, not for the anti-Bush political statement, but for violating a dress code that prohibits drugs and alcohol images. The courts however, disagreed with the school and found that, because the images referred to Bush’s alleged past use of cocaine and alcohol, they were protected as free political expression. A 2004 book makes the case the uniforms do not improve school safety or academic discipline. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, “School uniform polices do violate students’ first amendment rights…and go beyond just having a reasonable dress code that can promotes safety and decorum in schools.” All in all the courts have found this statement convincing.
