Relationship of Values and Ethics on Career Success
The professional values and ethics of an individual has a significant influence on their overall career success. In the following document, we will discuss the relationship among professional values, ethics, and career success by defining individual values and ethics, describing their influence on career success, and providing specific examples.
Defining Values and Ethics
Defining values and ethics, we would have to consider each word individually as well as together, and identify how to perceive each term as it pertains to professionalism and career success. At its most basic, values are our standards and principles for judging worth. Ethics is deciding what is right or wrong in a particular situation in order to help guide our actions (Dictionary.com, 2006).
They are the criteria by which we judge things, people, ideas and situations to be good, desirable or on the other hand, bad or unwanted. Some decisions can land somewhere in between these extremes. We may apply our values consciously or they may function unconsciously. Three sources of professional values and ethics include but are not limited to organizational values and codes of conduct, societal expectations, and individual beliefs and backgrounds. There are many sources that people can find help on setting ones’ values and ethics (FDU, 2010).

The Influence of Professional Values and Ethics on Career Success
Professional values and ethics influence every action and guide the individual’s everyday behavior in obtaining career success. Each of us creates, establish, and set our definition of career success throughout life with the level of attainment determined by our decision-making process and actions. Values provide us with a guideline and our ethics steers the direction so that we may follow the path. The following describes how our values and ethics each make an influence on our ability to meet our goal.
Values Guide Us to Our Goals
“Whether we think about it or not, values guide our everyday behavior, even the most mundane choices.” (Urbany, Reynolds, Phillips, 2008).
Values influence our overall decision making each day and as we strive to attain our goals in achieving career success, can affect our actions and thought process. Throughout our lives, we have learned and gathered knowledge to form our own set of values – both personal and professional. These values would be our guide – influencing our choices in setting a career goal to each action we take in achieving those goals. Within this set of beliefs also lies the motivating factor. This partnered with their ethics, will drive the standard and overall level of performance, engagement, and execution.
Ethics Keep Us on the Path
One’s ability to determine right or wrong can put sense of “what is right into day-to-day action as you demonstrate honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility” (Carter, Bishop, Kravits 2007, p.438).
With our values influencing our decisions, ethical behavior would help keep us on the path and continue to drive us in making the effort to live in accordance to our own set of values. As stated by Carter, Bishop, and Kravits (2007), it will help us in growing self-confidence and in our ability to make good choices so that we may continue to learn, improve, and take responsibility. In addition, as we make more and more ethical decisions while striving for success in our career goals, we can earn many important intangible rewards such as trust and respect that will help encourage and support our goals. Below are examples of the influence of professional values and ethics on career success.

Examples of Values and Ethics Influences on Career Success
The relationship among professional values, ethics, and career success are important and go hand in hand. If a person or company is not professional or does not practice good ethics, then their business will not be successful. Companies that have been in business for many years all have the same things in common; they are professional in the services they sell, and they run their business ethically with high standards and good morals. No matter what professional path you choose; to be successful you will need to utilize good ethics and professional values. “Employees can lie to managers, too, and the ones who are honest are usually the ones who are relied on more and climb the ladder of success more quickly” (The Money Puzzle, 2010).
If you were to steal an idea from another employee and promoted over it, you would have instant career success. You would not have gotten it off your own merits though and eventually would have to produce another award winning idea like the one that got you the promotion. Unless you were to steal another idea, you probably would not be promoted again and your boss would most likely realize that you did not produce the original idea to begin with.
People who sell counterfeit and knock-off items such as designer handbags make a lot of fast money, but have no sense of professional values and are immoral. Some would call them successful, but their business practices and ethics would catch up with them. By selling knock-off items, there would be a lack of repeat customers and they would eventually fail and have to go into another field of work. If you lie to the customer, he or she will soon find out. This means you have lost that customer for future sales. However, if you tell the truth about a product or service, even if the truth is not great, that customer will appreciate it and remember it, and will come back to you when he or she has need of your company’s offerings in the future. This can boost your career like nothing else. The main reason for this is that people appreciate honesty. “So many people are used to being lied to today that whenever someone is honest with them and open about it, it makes an impact that the customer does not forget” (The Money Puzzle, 2010).
