Nobody could have even thought of what she had gone through after seeing her cheerfully playing with the children in the playground. But I was just about to tell the world about her achievements.
The sun was rising at the horizon, its warm orange colours warmed me up as I stood there taking in the beauty of life in one deep breath, taking in the scenery of lush lime green fields with colourful flowers scattered throughout making it look like a green carpet with a colourful flowery pattern. I took in the fresh clean sweet smelling air of the countryside. The day had just begun…
I got dressed and set the ball rolling to find my story. I was a journalist and worked for a women’s magazine and I had just stumbled upon a hot story. I had a long tiring day ahead of me and i was all prepared to face it.
I got into the taxi. It was quite spacious and cold due to the air conditioner. I enjoyed the beautiful picturesque scenery on my way to the good lady orphanage. I was completely mesmerized by the beauty of this place it was like heaven I fell in love with it.
I reached my destination and approached my target, my story a beautiful young lady dressed in a cheerful flowered dress enjoying the morning breeze in the garden as she sipped her coffee from the huge mug. She motioned me to sit next to her and offered me some coffee which I diligently accepted. I then began my interview.
“So how did you manage to escape from the cruel witch as you call her” she laughed at me as if I had cracked a joke. Then she started talking “My parents died in an accident and I was left all alone and very vulnerable. That’s when I met Mrs. Granville; she scared me to death at first sight. She was a short plump woman with a hunched back and a long pointed nose and she very much reminded me of the witch in Hansel and Gretel.

She handed me a chocolate and promised me a good life and took me to her house. All through the ride to her place in her rusted brown car the story of Hansel and Gretel ran through my head like a hammer persistently hammering inside my head I just could not get the thought out of my head. But as a child I was happy at the same time to get a home.
When we reached her place she ushered me in and showed me my room. It was a small room with an even smaller bed, a small window that hardly allowed any light through and a small mirror on the opposite side of the wall. Before I could show my disapproval towards the room the lady had already vanished into thin air and the door locked…I suddenly felt a lurch in my heart. Oh my God! What if it’s true? What if she is really a witch?
It frightened me even more. I did not know where I was and tears started rolling down my eyes. I started wiping away my tears and that’s when I heard a noise and saw a brick on the wall move out of its place. I leaped into the air in fright as the voice on the other end started blabbering.
I moved slowly towards it. It was another girl just like me but she was not alone she had some friends with her. “Hi! Am Nadia and these are my friends Jack, Clarissa and Edison” she said. “Looks like you are another one of her victims” Clarissa said. They told me who Mrs. Granville really was.
Mrs. Granville would go around from place to place with a different name duping children by luring them into a better life. She would later sell them to get lots of money in return. For the first time since I entered the house I felt anger raging inside me instead of fear. How could someone be so cruel?
We had been planning since weeks on our escape plan and mow we finally had the chance. Both Mrs. Granville and her partner were out on some business venture. We seized the opportunity and took the risk we feared the most. Jack was a mastermind at locks almost as if he was a professional burglar and in a jiffy we were out of the room and cautiously moving towards the door.

SIEGE I open the door to my unmarked patrol car. Its a ninety-four black Pontiac Grand Prix. I climb into the drivers seat, close the door, buckle up, and start the car. The powerful V 8 rumbles as the electronic starter ignites the gasoline and drives the pistons up and down. I rev the engine just because I like to hear that puppy purr. As the car warms up, my electronic equipment comes to life. ...
As we passed by the witch’s room a thought struck me faster than lightening. I had already entered inside the room before anyone could stop me. I ran towards her desk and started flipping through her papers. “What are you doing? We have to get out of here!” scram Jack “Just a second am looking for something” “But what are you looking for?” “Anything that would prove her guilty” “Found it!”
It was a black file with the label ‘TRANSACTIONS’ on it. It was struck on under the table. It had all the information about her partners in crime and all the crimes she had committed. I was really happy I did not remember the last time I was this happy.
We got out of the jail like house and ran straight to the police station where we told them everything about the witch and even handed over the proof and as we all expected she was jailed and we were sent off to an orphanage where we grew up.
Today she runs her own orphanage with Jack, Clarissa, Nadia and Edison. Cynthia’s story is truly an inspiring story and it taught me very well that where there is a will there always is a way.
