Senior English Fourth Quarter class plan 1. We will be reading and discussing in class the Pulitzer Prize winning novel “The Bridge of San Luis Rey” by Thornton Wilder. This short novel is comprised of 5 (short) chapters that will be read both in and out of class. You must bring this book to class every day beginning on April 11, 2005. Failure to have book for study will result in loss of 5 pts. a.
There will be in class discussion and knowledgeable participation will be anticipated and graded. b. There will be quizzes and other assignments based on the reading and related information. 2. Spelling and Vocabulary will continue to be a part of the class. The 15 word vocabulary lists will be judged on only (a) criteria below.
Incorrect information in this area will result in no credit for that word. a. A proper sentence using the word in the fashion indicated by the handout. b. 10 Extra points will be available if the sentences are properly constructed into a paragraph (s) that form a coherent story. c.
Weekly tests on the Vocabulary list will be based upon a combination of knowledge of word definitions, parts of speech and correct spelling. 3. OPTION ONE: A second piece of literature to be read and reported on. This work can be selected from the attached list (a different book from the ones you may have read in past quarters).

A “half-way” report providing status of your reading and a brief (2-3 paragraphs) outline of the story as far as you have read is due Monday, May 9, 2005. (This follows spring break thus giving you adequate time to complete) Your final paper will be due on or before Friday, May 27, 2005.
This report must be typed and in APA format (including footnotes, bibliography, and references).
The report must include at least the following. a. A Short biography of the author (show outside references) b. A short discussion of the plot. c.
A discussion of the major Themes, Motifs, and Symbols. d. A discussion of major characters, including an analysis of their motives for behavior. e.
Depending upon the genre of the book chosen include your response to one of the following: i. Mystery: Identify the mystery and explain how the investigation illuminates the work as a whole. ii. Abnormal behavior: discuss the eccentric behavior and how it might be considered normal. Also discuss how the behavior contributes to the writing as a whole. iii.
Moral ambiguity: explain the ambiguity and discuss how it is important to the whole work. iv. Tragedy: discuss how the tragic figure is an instrument for the suffering of others. Discuss how this suffering brought upon others contributes to the tragic nature of the story. v.
General: Discuss how the saying, “literature is the questions minus the answers,” applies to the work and how the author treats his / her question (s) to exemplify this statement. 4. OPTION TWO: Prepare and submit a research paper on a selected classical author (minimum 7 pages, not including bibliography) including discussion on biography, writing style, influences, and common themes, motifs, and symbols. Scholarly, complete, and properly cited references will be expected, with no less than 7 (maximum 4 from Internet sources) cited.
This will be done in APA format, double-spaced with 1″ margins. a. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. Vocabulary work is due at the beginning of the class on Thursday of each week.
