You have received a business research study done by a consultant for a life insurance company. The study is a survey of customer satisfaction based on a sample of 600. You are asked to comment on its quality. What do you look for? or,
In your organization’s management development program, there was a heated discussion between people who claimed that theory is impractical and not effective, and others who claimed that effective theory is the most practical approach to problems. What position would you take and why? Theory can be impractical and not effective and it can also be effective and a practical approach to problems. For someone to take either side exclusively, they ignore the need for both facts and theory. Theories tend to be complex, be abstract, and involve multiple variables.
Theories are the generalizations we make about variables and the relationships among them. We use these generalizations to make decisions and predict outcomes. Our ability to make rational decisions, as well as to develop scientific knowledge, is measured by the degree to which we combine fact and theory. A theory is a set of systematically interrelated concepts, definitions, and propositions that are advanced to explain and predict facts.

In this sense, we have many theories and use them continually to explain or predict what goes on around us. To the degree that our theories are sound and fit the situation, we are successful in our explanations and predictions. Because there is uncertainty in decision making, it is important that all the known risks involved be scientifically evaluated. Helpful in this evaluation is probability theory. Business problems should not only analyze the facts of “real world experience” but should also construct theories about the variables involved that produce these outcomes.

With so many ways to approach a question or a situation I think sometimes one may over think how to address certain situations or scenarios without theory. Then again I wonder why are some answers given not right if I applied a certain theory; did the observation go too far, miss the point or is it just that the question was not intended for the type of response. Theory is an conceptual framework and develops a coherent system of interrelated objectives and fundamentals that can lead to consistent standards or outcomes that prescribes the nature, function, and limits of problems in most cases.
I believe in determining if theory is impractical or not is to research the reliability of the information provided, which is a trust worth and dependable observation of a source. The measurement in research or observations in context is consistent and without a change. The validity of a measurement is to access the specific concept as there can be various types and many to describe something. Whatever is set out to measure the outcome is the ability to measure something. Ways of knowing something can be tricky, things or concepts can be reliable but not valid. However, but if what is used is not reliable the whole concept, theory or explanation is not valid.
However validity measures what is supposed to be measured. If the purpose is being defined than how valid something is will be constructed. For example, a measuring tape measure length of things, sometimes used for building or cutting measurements of wood, it is valid for that purpose. But a measuring tape would not be valid for measuring density or water pressure; they are different types of measurements. There would be no consistent result if a measuring tape tried to measure the two different things (wood and water pressure), so it is not reliable in the water pressure aspect. My approach to theory is that it is impractical in some cases and test helps to determine, reliable, valid or neither and both. Reliability is a step before reaching measurement and theory validity.
