The Essay on Leadership And The Common Good By Randy David
” A style of leadership breeds its own followers”… A few years ago, I was given the opportunity to head a certain group of young people in our community. Be being a leader I was able to experience a lot of challenges: difficult situations to face, difficult people to handle and difficult decisions to make. But all these things were able to pull out the best in me, I could not ...
Leadership is “organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal”. The leader may or may not have any formal authority. Studies of leadership have produced theories involving traits, situational interaction, function, behavior, power, vision and values, charisma, and intelligence, among others. Somebody whom people follow: somebody who guides or directs others. Most theories in the 20th century argued that great leaders were born, not made. Current studies have indicated that leadership is much more complex and cannot be boiled down to a few key traits of an individual.
Years of observation and study have indicated that one such trait or a set of traits does not make an extraordinary leader. What scholars have been able to arrive at is that leadership traits of an individual do not change from situation to situation; such traits include intelligence, assertiveness, or physical attractiveness. However, each key trait may be applied to situations differently, depending on the circumstances. Determination and drive include traits such as initiative, energy, assertiveness, perseverance, masculinity, and sometimes dominance 1
The following summarizes the main leadership traits found in research by Jon P. Howell, business professor at New Mexico State University and author of the book Snapshots of great leadership and often are very competitive with others. Cognitive capacity includes intelligence, analytical and verbal ability, behavioral flexibility, and good judgment. Individuals with these traits are able to formulate solutions to difficult problems, work well under stress or deadlines, adapt to changing situations, and create well-thought-out plans for the future.
Howell provides examples of Steve Jobs and Abraham Lincoln as encompassing the traits of determination and drive as well as possessing cognitive capacity, demonstrated by their ability to adapt to their continuously changing environments. Self-confidence encompasses the traits of high self-esteem, assertiveness, emotional stability, and self-assurance. Individuals that are self-confident do not doubt themselves or their abilities and decisions; they also have the ability to project this self-confidence onto others, building their trust and commitment.
The Essay on Heroic Leaders Leadership In Response To Situations Antigone
Heroic leaders come in many odd shapes and forms. As can be seen in the characters of Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Antigone. Contained within these famous Greek tragedies one can see how leadership is fostered and the challenges encountered by the two characters of Oedipus and Antigone. Although they are tragic heroic leaders, they are able to maintain an integrity that is vital in a leader. In ...
Integrity is demonstrated in individuals who are truthful, trustworthy, principled, consistent, dependent, loyal, and not deceptive. Leaders with integrity often share these values with their followers, as this trait is mainly an ethics issue. It is often said that these leaders keep their word and are honest and open with their cohorts. Sociability describes individuals who are friendly, extroverted, tactful, flexible, and interpersonally competent. 2 Such a trait enables leaders to be accepted well by the public, use diplomatic measures to solve issues, as well as hold the ability to adapt their social persona to the situation at hand.
According to Howell, Mother Teresa is an exceptional example that embodies integrity, assertiveness, and social abilities in her diplomatic dealings with the leaders of the world. Few great leaders encompass all of the traits listed above, but many have the ability to apply a number of them to succeed as front-runners of their organization or situation. 3 Forms of leadership There are three kinds of leadership: coercive, charismatic, and conventional. Coercive leadership is what you get in a dictatorship, or a pack of dogs. The leader is whoever took the post by force.
They stay in power as long as they can defeat or deter challengers, which requires that the leader is the strongest, literally or in the sense of being the most ruthless. There is a top-down power structure that keeps the majority in line by reminding them that they have no choice. Charismatic leadership is what you find in a band, or other relatively fresh voluntary association. The leader is perceived as being the best at whatever is the aim of the organization. Followers follow the leader because they value their inspiration and direction.
Any challengers would have to demonstrate superior ability, rather than attack the leader as such. Conventional leadership is the kind found in democratic states and other large, mature organizations. The leader has no distinguishing characteristics other than fairness and commitment. The members of the organization subscribe to the leadership because they see the benefits of structure and coherence. The leader is expected to identify and publish a consensus direction, but not primarily to steer the group. 4 All three kinds of leadership have validity, including the coercive one in certain contexts.
The Essay on Leadership Manager Organization Employees
... has the greatest chance of being successful when all of the employees work toward achieving its goals. Since leadership ... learning and success. Today's managers are not leaders, they are people in charge and nothing more. They don't ... good manager. However, they are only managing and not setting an example as a leader for the employees of an organization. An organization ...
Problems in leadership typically occur when the leader misrepresents, is not true to, or changes the kind of leadership that they are in charge of. States are almost always structured as coercive, because of their roots in ethnic and class conflict. They emphasize forced compliance with laws and have a large domestic enforcement apparatus. This does democratic polity a disservice. Substantially, modern states are conventionally led. Laws are obeyed and institutions observed when the majority think that those are useful. Coercing the majority is unproductive.
Dissent ought to be accommodated and outright enforcement reserved for those who are too selfish or short sighted to abide by the norm. From time to time states get a charismatic leader. It’s not clear whether these are good or bad. Kennedy was charismatic but he escalated the Vietnam war, nearly triggereed WW3, and sent people on impressive but useless trips to the moon. Gorbachev was a conventional leader who embarked on the task, deemed necessary by consensus, of modernising the Soviet state through a reformist path. I prefer Gorbachev.
Charismatic leaders are also prone to idolization, so that the nation feels that only a supposedly higher grade of person can provide leadership 5 Importance of Leadership Leadership is an important function of management which helps to maximize efficiency and to achieve organizational goals. The following points justify the importance of leadership in a concern. 1. Initiates action- Leader is a person who starts the work by communicating the policies and plans to the subordinates from where the work actually starts. 2. Motivation- A leader proves to be playing an incentive role in the concern’s working.
He motivates the employees with economic and non-economic rewards and thereby gets the work from the subordinates. 3. Providing guidance- A leader has to not only supervise but also play a guiding role for the subordinates. Guidance here means instructing the subordinates the way they have to perform their work effectively and efficiently. 4. Creating confidence- Confidence is an important factor which can be achieved through expressing the work efforts to the subordinates, explaining them clearly their role and giving them guidelines to achieve the goals effectively.
The Essay on Why Do Bad Things Happer To Good People
Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do good things happen to bad people? These two questions have bewildered mankind throughout the centuries. Even the greatest philosophers and theologians have yet to develop a concrete answer. Philosophers, theologians, and even religious leaders have developed many hypotheses. Some of these hypotheses support each other while others conflict. It is for ...
It is also important to hear the employees with regards to their complaints and problems. 6 5. Building morale- Morale denotes willing co-operation of the employees towards their work and getting them into confidence and winning their trust. A leader can be a morale booster by achieving full co-operation so that they perform with best of their abilities as they work to achieve goals. 6. Builds work environment- Management is getting things done from people. An efficient work environment helps in sound and stable growth. Therefore, human relations should be kept into mind by a leader.
He should have personal contacts with employees and should listen to their problems and solve them. He should treat employees on humanitarian terms. 7. Co-ordination- Co-ordination can be achieved through reconciling personal interests with organizational goals. This synchronization can be achieved through proper and effective co-ordination which should be primary motive of a leader 7 C H A P T E R II : GOOD LEADER Here are 10 characteristics of good leadership: Recognizes the value in other people, so continually invests in others – Good leaders see a large part of their role as developing other leaders.
Leadership development takes place in an organization as good leaders begin to share their experiences, good and bad, with others. Shares information with those in the organization – There is a tendency of some leaders to hold information, because information is power, but a good leader knows that the more information the team has that collectively the team is better, which directly benefits the leader. Has above average character – There are no perfect people, but for a leader to be considered good, they must have a character that is unquestioned within the organization.
The Essay on Importance of good roads in a country
Good roads are essential for the development of a country. The Romans realized this centuries ago. Wherever they established themselves, they tried to improve the roads there. Today, the governments of all countries in the world are building more and more roads to gain access to the remotest regions of their countries. Roads link towns and villages and enable the people of one place to communicate ...
Leadership always draws criticism from someone, so a leader may not be able to get everyone to believe in him or her, but the people who know the leader best should trust the leader’s character. Uses their influence for the good of others – Good leaders are as interested in making a positive difference in people’s lives as they are in creating a healthy profit margin. 8 This doesn’t mean that balance sheets and income statements aren’t important, in fact they are vital for the success of an organization (even non-profits), but a good leader doesn’t separating a desire for helping others from the desire for financial success.
Good leaders find ways to leverage financial health to strengthen the well-being of others. Is skillful and competent – Good leaders can be depended on for their professionalism and follow through. Not afraid for others to succeed (even greater than their own success) – Good leaders realize that some followers will outgrow the leader’s ability to develop them any further.
Good leaders, however, aren’t threatened by another’s success. They are willing to celebrate as those around them succeed. Serves others expecting nothing in return – Good leaders have a heart of service. They truly love and value people and want to help others for the good of the one being helped, not necessarily for personal gain. Continues to learn – Good leaders are always learning and implementing those learnings into the betterment of the organization. That could be through reading, conferences, web-based learnings, or through other leaders, but also through people who report to the leader.
9 Remains accessible, approachable, and accountable to others – Good leaders don’t isolate themselves from people regardless of the amount of responsibility or power he or she attains. Good leaders willingly seek the input of other people into their professional and personal lives. Is visionary: Thinks for the organization beyond today – Good leaders are always thinking beyond today. “What’s next? ” is a common question asked by good leaders, knowing that someone must continually encourage change, growth and strategic thinking for an organization to remain healthy.

Roles of a Good Leader What make a great leader? Below are the 7 responsibilities of a great leader, according to world renowned business trainer, Brian Tracy. 1. Set and achieve business goals. A leader thinks about the future. You have to have a vision and set your goal based on that vision. You have to be clear where the business is going in 5, 10 even 20 years. It is your task to see the future and set your goal based on that. You have to set the goal and mission for your business. 2. Innovate and marketing Innovation and marketing bring in customers and sales.
You have to be good at marketing and set an example to other people. 10 You have to be constantly thinking of new ways to market and improve your business to bring in more sales and revenue. This is the 20% of business activities which result in 80% of result. 3. Solve problems and make decision Everybody has problems and crisis all the time. Instead of getting angry, upset and blame other people, you should be solving the problems. A leader is a good problem solver. You rise in life as you develop ability to solve greater problems. The bigger the problem you can solve, the more money you make.
So rather than complaining and being upset, start thinking about the solution and taking action. 4. Set priorities You only have certain amount of time each day. Your task is to decide what to do first, what to do later and what to not do at all. You need to stop doing things of lower value and concentrate on more important tasks. You have to make a list and decide what is more important. 11 5. Focus and concentrate The ability to focus and concentrate is the hallmark of successful person. Set an example Everyone is watching you. You are setting the tone for your business. Everyone is observing you and following what you do. Ask yourself a question, what kind of organization you have when everyone in the organisation is just like you? Always imagine you are watched even if no one is watching. 12 CHAPTER III:
LEADERSHIP IN THE PHILIPPHINES Every country needs great leaders to attain its common goals, such as economic progress, national security and sustainable living for its citizens. That is why local and national elections of government officials and leaders are considered as among the most important events that happen in any nation. In the Philippines, poverty, crimes and corruption are still among the imminent problems that most Filipinos are grousing. These problems have already become so common that many Filipinos have already lost their hope of a great grand change.
Instead of having a strong desire to join others in developing our nation, many of us have been stuck in making that goal only a dream. Now, we all need to stop dreaming. Let us again transform that dream into a strong desire. Let’s put that desire in our heart – the heart that we can’t live without. A great leadership in the Philippines must become alive, and it’s never too late to start. If you’re a Filipino whose love is for his own country, you should learn how to lead the Filipinos. The following discussions shall guide all of us. 13 Start leading the first Filipino that you can – yourself
Leadership is not only for mayors, governors, congressmen, senators or for the president. It’s not only for priests, famous artists or the business icons. Leadership is for all of us. You can be a leader of yourself. That is why if you want to lead the Filipinos, you should start by leading the nearest Filipino within your reach – you. Corruption is not only happening in the government agencies or in the house of legislations. Corruption can also occur within us. There, it actually starts it all. Ask yourself why there are some people who succeed in life despite of the perhaps dirty politics that’s happening in our country.
They actually live a better life despite of that. The reason is that they are not affected and corrupted by that external force of corruption. They are on their own uncorrupted selves which they have achieved through personal development. So how can you lead yourself anyway? Here are some things you can do to accomplish it. – Lead yourself to finding your real talents and in developing it. – Lead yourself to learning good virtues, such as patience, diligence, kindness, generosity, compassion and humility. – Lead yourself to evaluating your current values and principles, and in correcting what’s wrong with them.
14 – Lead yourself to a healthy lifestyle and in overcoming your vices. – Lead yourself to bringing your own business or profession to success. – Lead yourself to financial freedom. – Lead yourself to keeping honesty and integrity. – Lead yourself to loving God, your family, and our country. – Lead yourself to becoming a law abiding citizen. – Lead yourself to many other activities that can cause your self development. Analyze our national problems If you have made yourself great and personally developed, you are now capable of becoming a selfless person.
This is because you are now a stronger person who can prioritize others rather than yourself. You are now more capable of leading other Filipinos. To lead our countrymen, we need to find out the problems that our country is experiencing. We need to explore not only the problems that we see, but also the roots of these crises. Here’s how you can be aware of what’s wrong with the Philippines now. – Watch, read and hear the news about the Philippines inside and out our country. You can do these with TV, radio, newspaper or the Internet. – Join and observe people’s discussions about what’s happening in our country.
You can join forums and groups online, such as on Facebook or in Twitter. – Study economics 15 – Learn the right politics. – Read our Philippine History and the previous governments. – Study the current laws and regulations in our country. – Look around you. – Talk and discuss with your friends, classmates and officemates any current issues about our country. – Do other things that will increase your awareness about the Philippines. In other words, you should not ignore what’s happening with our nation. Remember that loving starts from knowing.
Hence, if you want to love our country, you should start by knowing it. Know our country and analyze our problems. You can start it by gathering important data though the list above. We need to sacrifice our self-interest. If you spend more time in following the news about Lady Gaga, Britney Spears or Justine Bieber, why not start allocating more time on the news about the Philippine realities. If you are already bored and uninterested in hearing the current news, you can go back to our history or look forward to our future to get information that can be useful for our nation today. 16
Discover solutions to those problems After collecting information about our country and about us, it’s time to do something with those pieces of information. Leadership is not all about knowing, isn’t it? Thus we need to find solutions on those problems that we realize. But how? There are obvious crises that we are facing, such as poverty, war in Mindanao, street crimes, the possible destruction of our natural resources, overpopulation and corruption in the public offices. If we make researches, we can actually understand that the solutions to these problems are simple. It’s just not easy.
Because there can only be one president in our republic, it’s not practical to try to solve all of those problems above. What we can do is to choose the specific problem which we believe we can have the highest rate of success in solving it. For example if you’re an environmentalist, you can focus on protecting our environment. If you’re a businessman or an entrepreneur, you can concentrate on providing more jobs in the country. If you’re a financial expert, you can educate more Filipinos with financial literacy. If you’re a blogger, you can influence people online with nationalism.
In other words, be an expert – be an expert. . 17 Test and practice those solutions We need to ensure that we’re doing something right. That is why we need to not just promise ourselves to do them, but we need to actually execute them. For example, if you want to lead many Filipinos to good governance, you need to be a role model. You need to prove that you’re an effective leader. You need to show that you can indeed govern effectively even in just your small organization. The key to determining our effectiveness is to start doing what we need to do.
Remember that as we go on, we will know what we need to change and improve. Therefore make your talk your walk. Influence other Filipinos To better inflict a major change in our country, you need to expand your influence. This is because the more people you will convince the more force you can create. If you don’t have enough financial resources, you can use the Internet and the social media to widen your reach. Here are some ways on how you can leverage the social media to leading people into a common goal: – Create a blog and post stories, images and videos that are related to your cause regularly.
18 – Make a Facebook page and promote it to more people. Post your blog posts on your page. – Start a Facebook group, invite people and make it grow. – Create a Twitter account and also tweet your motivational messages, as well as the links to your blog posts. – Build your personal Facebook profile or timeline and attract more friends and subscribers. – Build a presence in Google+ and other popular social networking sites. Nowadays, everyone who wants to promote something to a wider audience should not ignore the power of social media. Join forces with other leaders
It’s time to collaborate with other leaders who also want to bring our country to progress. We might have been in different and unique groups, but when it comes to uniting a nation, we should all go along to create a single force. Uniting with other organizations can help each group in strengthening their power. They can use each other to lift each other. This is the essence of collaboration, where everyone can enjoy their shared assets and resources. 19 Conquer the problems and seize victory It sounds pretty tough to accomplish, isn’t it? Of course it is.
That is why we have discussed all the tough instructions above. But leadership is what it’s all about. And since our country is suffering from a difficult problem, we need leaders who can do the hard work. The hard work will actually start in developing ourselves – that’s what we’ve discussed at the top, right? It’s really tough to develop ourselves. The self-discipline, selflessness, compassion, kindness, generosity – those things are actually hard to achieve. But if we can overcome our own weakness, we can be stronger to conquer the problems of our society.
The key to success is simply persistence, that is, we should not quit until we can claim our victory. Let’s not lose hope. Let’s try it all over again. Create new generation leaders to maintain success We have a long way to reaching our nationalistic goals. But, if we become better leaders, we can lead a significant number of Filipinos to our righteous goals. We can also create our own success with the organizations we lead. And to reproduce and multiply that success, we should create new leaders. We should ensure that our legacy will be passed on to the new generations.
This legacy is not about ourselves; it’s not about our fame or name. 20 Final thoughts Making the Philippines as one of the most developed country in the world is such a difficult task. However, it is not impossible to realize. If our neighboring countries can make it, then why can’t we? I’m not proud to be a Filipino because I don’t want to give pride to my country. But I am honored to be a Filipino because I want to bring not pride, but honor and glory. In this kind of hard situation that our nation is facing, we don’t need pride. What we need is humility – the virtue we need to serve humbly.
Yes, bringing our country to the top is such a tough mission. But if we will tell everyone we can’t accomplish a great goal like that, then it’s just the same as telling that there are already no great Filipinos that are living in our country today. I believe that there are still Filipinos who can raise their power to do the most difficult things for our country. I know that there are still many Filipinos in our time that can be great leaders. I believe that you are one of them. 21 10 Famous Leaders in the Philippines 1. Imelda Marcos. Her name is synonymous with having a huge shoe collection.
The widow of former president of the Philippines Fernando Marcos amassed great wealth and was charged dozens of times for illegally earning it. An investigation of her property at the presidential palace after she was exiled to Hawaii found 900 handbags, 500 gowns and thousands of pairs of shoes. 2. Ferdinand Marcos. The former president of the Philippines is probably the most hated politician in the country’s history. Marcos ruled the Philippines for two decades and left a legacy of corruption, nepotism and human rights violations. His government was charged with the assassination of the well-loved senator Benigno Aquino.
Along with his wife Imelda, he allegedly moved billions of US dollars to banks in Switzerland and other countries. 3. Corazon “Cory” Aquino. The first female president of the Philippines was much loved and named Time’s Person of the Year in 2009 after her death. In the 1980s she accomplished plenty, including heading the peaceful revolution called “People Power” that toppled the corrupt politician Ferdinand Marcos from his presidency. Her country’s peaceful protest against corruption and human rights violations was an inspiration to other peaceful political revolts around the world. 22 4.
Benigno Aquino. Aquino was an unyielding public opposer of Ferdinand Marcos’ corrupt regime. The husband of former president Cory Aquino was assassinated as he stepped off the plane that landed him back to his home country from exile. To this day nobody has been sentenced for the crime. His death became the catalyst for his wife’s political career and the fall of the Marcos era. 5. Joseph “Erap” Estrada. Loved and hated by two opposing camps in the Philippines, former president Estrada marketed himself as the champion of the masses. The elite and educated, however, looked at him with disdain.
The second “People Power” revolt in the Philippines caused this politician to lose his hold on the presidency, and he was charged with plunder but later pardoned. 6. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson. Lacson was the former director of the Philippine National Police and a senator. What made this politician tabloid-worthy were his links to various murder cases in the Philippines, including the killings of political publicist Salvador Dacer and eleven members of a Filipino mafia gang called Kuratong Baleleng. 7. Miriam Defensor. Senator Defensor has always been somewhat of an overachiever.
She graduated magna cum laude with a degree in political science from the University of the Philippines and completed her masters degree at the University of Michigan law school. “Australia Magazine” ranked her among “The 100 Most Powerful Women in the World” back in 1996, along with Imelda Marcos. 23 8. Raul Roco. The former senator and director of the Department of Education in the Philippines was a very popular politician among the youth for his strong stand against corruption. The Department of Education was ranked the fourth most corrupt agency before Roco headed it.
He demanded transparency from the purchasing activities of his department’s employees. He made sure public school teachers were paid promptly and pushed for free education up until high school for the Filipino youth. 9. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The second female president of the Philippines came from a family of politicians. Her father was former president Diosdado Macapagal. Forbes ranked her as the 44th most powerful woman in the world in 2009. 10. Manny Pacquiao. Manny Pacquiao is known by sports-lovers around the world as “Pacman,” not as a politician but as one of the best boxers in history.
He did try his luck in politics, however. He ran for congress in 2007 but lost. His countrymen apparently believed his place was inside the ring and not in politics. The Philippines has less than a century free from foreign rule, after being colonized by Spain, the United States and, briefly, Japan. This is one political climate that is worth keeping an eye on. 24 Distinct Characteristics of a Leader Compiled by the Santa Clara University and the Tom Peters Group: Honest — Display sincerity, integrity, and candor in all your actions. His service to the American people was short-lived when he was assassinated in 1963 in Dallas, Texas. Although he was not able to finish his term in office, he was well loved by the American people for his vision and outstanding service to the country. Because of his youth, charisma and his outstanding leadership qualities, he won the hearts and minds of the American electorate and voted for him to become the 35th President of America.
In his famous inaugural address as the 35th President of the United States of America, he encouraged the American people to unite and he said: “Ask not what your country can dofor you, ask what you can do for your country”. This famous statement became the rallying point for Americans to unite and to fight the evils of war, poverty, disease, and tyranny. One of his major contributions to mankind was his support for racial integration and civil rights. 27 During his incumbency, the issue of racial discrimination was so widespread in America that even with the US Supreme Court ruling that racial segregation in schools,
