The word family is derived from the Latin word famil, which means a household including servants, slaves, and all others that lived under the authority of the household head. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the word was commonly used to describe a married couple and their children. Just as the meaning of the word has changed, so has the functions and structure of the unit. Changed so much to a point that there are many different definitions and ideas about what makes a family.

Family, a diverse group of personality’s existing in the same household. My family unit consisted of a group of people related by blood and by marriage. My parents divorced and remarried. I had the amazing experience of growing up with a very interesting family. I have blood siblings, step-siblings and a half-blood sibling. Being the first born in a mixed relation family proved to be interesting. birth order certainly affects our lives in area such as personality, professional goals and achievements and even personal relations. How birth order changes your life. First born children may be smarter than youngest and middle children. First born children’s IQ points are on average 3 points higher than their younger siblings; in fact, IQs tend to drop as more children are born in the family. However, Aaron Wichman of Ohio State University found that it’s not birth order that affects intelligence, its family size (from a research study called “Older Children Not Smarter than Younger Sibs, Study Finds”).
Big families can’t offer the same advantages to all the kids that small families can. It is the genetics and the family environment that affect IQ more than birth order.
First born children are more likely to go to college or university than youngest or middle children. If parents can afford to send one child to school, it’s more likely to be the first born. Families tend invest more in first born children than middle or youngest children. First born children are more likely to have the desire to educate themselves to have a successful career, often becoming surgeons or attorneys.
More often than not, first born are determined, confident organized. Born leaders! Did you know that that almost all of the U.S. Presidents were either the first-born child or the first-born son in their families? Newscasters and TV talk show hosts also tend to be first born or only children. Prominent examples include: Walter Cronkite, Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, Ted Koppel, Oprah, Donahue, Geraldo, Arsenio Hall and Rush Limbaugh. Clearly, firstborns are natural leaders. They also tend to be reliable, conscientious and perfectionists who don’t like surprises. Although, firstborns are typically aggressive, many are also compliant people pleasers. They are model children who have a strong need for approval from anyone in charge.

Firstborns are the most dominant and conscientious of the family. They are very organized and are usually over achievers. Firstborns also tend to be bossy and feel the need to have control, especially in their relationships. The ideal match for a first born would be the last born that has an older sibling of the opposite sex. For example, an older sister would be best suited for a younger brother who has an older sister. If a first born was paired with another first born there would be a power struggle, since both would feel the need to be in control causing conflict within the ranking.

Middle children often feel like their older sibling gets all the glory and attention while their younger sibling escapes all discipline. Because the middle child feels that the world pays him less attention, he tends to be secretive and do not openly share their thoughts or feelings.
Middle children may not feel they have a special place in the family so friends and peer groups become much more important. They can usually read people well, they are peacemakers who see all sides of a situation and are independent and inventive. Other personality traits include loyalty, dedicated and trustworthy.
Middle born may take longer to choose a career than firstborn or later-born. They may deliberately make opposite choices than firstborns; if the first born is a doctor, the middle child may choose to be a firefighter or policeman.
Middle born children are good negotiators who aren’t afraid of authority. They have a tendency to mold themselves around their partner. In regards to relationship compatibility, they have a bit of an advantage over other birth ranks. They can attract any of them, including those of the same rank. In studies of marital satisfaction, two middle born fare the best all-around of any other couple, according to Dr. Salmon.

Last born or babies of the family are very social and outgoing. They are the most financially irresponsible of all birth orders. They are out to have a good time. The lastborn child tends to be easygoing, creative and gregarious. They tend to be risk takers and are often open to challenges and new ideas. Lastborn males are typically not afraid of other men, and they often enjoy challenges and competition. A good match for a lastborn male is a first born female because they’re used to getting guidance and direction from their siblings. Examples of lastborn males include Jude Law, Bill Gates and Howard Stern.
The babies in the family also often tend to enjoy making people laugh. They like to be the center of attention but also are very affectionate.
Of course there are exceptions to the sibling rank. For instance, if there are many years between the first born and second born child, the second born child will have some characteristics of a firstborn. Or, if the firstborn is a girl and the second a boy, the son will have some first-born characteristics because he is the family’s first male child. Sibling deaths, adoptions and blended families can also upset the traditional birth order.
Only children are often referred to as first born children in triplicate. This means that they have many first born characteristics to the extreme. An only child can fit into any of the first born, middle child or last child categories. However, most only children tend to display first born traits.
