Globalization and Its Impact on Culture, Economy, and Information Technology
Introduction:
The world is not constant forever. People reside in different parts of the world; adopt many changes into their life styles and social structure over time that causes the world to change. Almost all the people in this world are somehow engaged in a huge network invented by globalization. According to Lieber and Weisberg (2002), “Definitions of globalization abound, but for our purposes it can be described as the increasing global integration of economies, information technology, the spread of global popular culture, and other forms of human interaction.” (p. 273-274) .Opponents of globalization argues that globalization has negatively affected almost every part of life; however, globalization has improved the knowledge and lifestyle of people and has positively affected the various aspects of human life such as, culture and economy.
Positive effect of globalization on Culture:
Firstly, globalization has positive impact on culture. Culture means the values, believes and behavior of certain group of people. Globalization has dissolved the international boundaries and created a great opportunity for people of different cultures to interact with each other. Those against the globalization argue that the cultural and group identity has been sacrificed by globalization. They argue that globalization causes cultural imperialism, which means the imposition of one culture on other cultures by replacing or destroying the original values of that culture, which leads to cultural collapse and loss of identical cultures (Kottak, 2009, p. 379).
The Essay on How Globalization Threatens Cultural Identity
In 1980 a movie came out that turned popular thought to the damage that globalization imposes on cultural identity. “The Gods Must Be Crazy” highlights a simple way that globalization threatens cultural identity. In this movie, the Sho tribe of the Kalahari Desert believes that it has been gifted with a special treat when an empty glass Pepsi bottle falls from a light aircraft flying overhead. ...
In addition, these people argue that globalization and especially the mass media have caused the access and exploitation of intellectual property and so, destroying the traditional culture (Kottak, 2009, p. 42-43).
They say that the mass media such as the internet provides the signs, music, songs and other cultural artifacts for free. These signs and cultural heritages, considered as an intellectual property and identity of different cultures, are misused, resold and misinterpreted through internet.
To some extent globalization leads to less distinctive cultures, but it does not mean ethnocide, the entire loss of individual culture. People, while adopting other cultures preserve, their own cultures, too. For example, in United States different groups speak both English and their own language; they celebrate holidays such as, thanks giving as well as their ethnic religious holidays like Eid (Kottak, 2009, p. 381- 382).
In addition, interaction of two different cultures does not mean acculturation should take place. People by interacting with each other can increase their knowledge and understanding about other cultures.
Similarly, this is not always the case that the mass media has allowed the misuse of cultural artifacts. It has provided different nations with the opportunity to present a true picture of their culture and allow others to understand their values that leads to tolerance and empathy by eliminating the ethnocentrism and stereotype. It not only helped spread the national signs, myths, songs and images within the national boundaries, but also internationally. It has provided an opportunity for people to practice and enjoy their culture even away from their home land. For example, Muslim Arabs in several countries follow the Al Jazeera network to reinforce their religious and ethnic identities(Kottak, 2009, p. 381- 382).
The Essay on Globalization And Transnational Corporations
GLOBALIZATION AND TRANSNATIONAL CORPORATIONS Economic integration as a hallmark of globalization• FDI increase• Increase of international currency transactions• Growth of marginal courtiers Global blessing or contagious disease? • Asian crisis Capitalism not yet fully globalized? • Core of the economy - 30 countries: Asian Pacific, Western Europe, North America• ...
Many people are ethnocentric they consider their culture better than other cultures. However, interacting with people from different cultures allows these people to change their view point, better understand and respect other cultures. In short, globalization allows people to adopt some values of other cultures while preserving their own distinctive believes. It also, connects different cultures which lead to understanding, respect and tolerance of other cultures. To sum up, globalization has allowed people to have access to many facilities which was not available to them previously.
Globalization impact on Economy:
Economy is another improved component of globalization. Globalization has upgraded many economies of the world by facilitating the flow and exchange of goods and services among different countries and promoting long and short distance trade. Opponents of globalization argue that globalization provides Multinational Corporation with the opportunity to take over the domestic companies in different countries of the world and weaken the domestic production. To exemplify, Apple Corporation, the world modern and dominant corporation which produce personal computers and other digital devices including iPod, iPhone and many more. In some countries like South Korea which produces electronic digital devices, such as Samsung mobiles cannot compete with Apple products because of its high quality and innovative designs. However, there are a number of benefits that a country can get because of the presence of Multinational Corporation.
Multinational Corporations play a vital role in the state revenue as they pay huge amount of taxes to the state. These taxes can contribute in better infrastructure, basic life facilities and economic development as a whole. Alli, Winter, and May, described in their research journal “Globalization: Its Effects” that “Multinational corporations (MNCs) under the framework of the Bretton Woods institutions (World Bank, International Monetary Fund) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) have achieved a standard international economic structure through the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).
This has resulted in: reductions in budgetary deficits, removal of food subsidies, promotion of foreign investment, import liberalization, privatization of the banking sectors, and reductions in the support of domestic agriculture.” (p. 90)
The Term Paper on Critical analysis of Good Country People by Flannery O’ Connor
Good Country People is one of the most sought after works of Flannery O’ Connor. It is said to be the biography of O’Connor but she never claimed it to be such. The novel Good Country People seems to reflect the current situation and emotional status of O’ Connor while she was writing the novel, and if it is not in fact her biography, her emotion at that time has influenced the novel greatly. ...
Multinational Corporations provide a country with a huge number of jobs that the public sector cannot. An increase in employment rate can again lead to development. These multinational corporations bring a competition for domestic companies. For instance, most of the times in developing countries domestic companies produce goods with lower price without considering the quality of the goods. However, if any foreign company provides people with better quality of goods, these domestic companies are compelled to make the quality of their goods better in order to compete these foreign companies. Consequently, the competition between foreign and domestic companies results in better quality of goods for the public. This allows a country to be more productive and competitive against foreign corporations. According to Tong and Reuer, Multinational corporations are competitive grounds for developing countries to take hard steps for improving own country economy, such as goods and services exchange, and supplying people with products. (p. 216)
For instance, a few years ago there were no Indian products, but now it produces people with good quality of products that can meet the needs of the public, such as computers, mobile phones, shoes and many other products. The Indian Economy manufacturing structure is being globalized in terms of business interdependency, limitation of tariffs, and production quantity along with the obligation of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
(S., A, & M, 2012, p. 1) Finally, all above assessments show that globalization causes the economy of a particular country to dramatically go up.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, although some people think of globalization as a negative phenomenon, the above analytical assessment gives one the sense that its positive impacts on certain aspects of human lives over weigh the negative ones. Moreover, globalization has achieved the economical system of developing countries, which has enforced them to produce products in own countries. Globalization also provided people with the opportunity to interact with foreign culture. After all above evidences, it can be argued that globalization has improved the living standard of people, and assisted economy that has truly positive impacts on education systems, job availability, and many other human efforts.
The Essay on Support Globalization World Global Good
To defend or not? That is the question. Globalization has become an issue for a long time now. Some do support it while some don't. The Essay on Impact Of Globalization On Non Western Culture
Globalization is far reaching in this day and age. Globalization is the worldwide flow of goods, services, money, people, information, and culture. It leads to a greater interdependence and mutual awareness among the people of the world (Tischler, 2011, 2007, p. 430). One non-Western culture that has been impacted by globalization is China. An example of the impact of globalization on China is ...
