Introduction 3. About Arran 3. 1 Geography In the wedge of sea between Ayrshire and Kintyre lies the Isle of Arran. Oval shaped, 25 miles long, with mountains in the North, pastoral lands in the South. A ‘Scotland in miniature’, the north is ruggedly mountainous and sparsely populated, the south is milder and home to the majority of the 4, 500 people who live on the island. Arran is the most accessible of the Scottish islands and the most southerly.
The line between the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland divides the island almost exactly in two and Arran mirrors the differing landscapes. Access to the island is by ferry from the port of Ardrossan, 30 miles from Glasgow. The crossing, which is about 12 miles, takes 55 minutes. There is also a small ferry, during the summer months, which connects from Lochranza, at the north end of the island, to the Mull of Kintyre.
