There are many reasons why project implementations fail. Some reasons include failure to identify company needs, failure to distinguish company needs and wants, and failure to assess technical competency of staff. Some IT projects fail prior to the actual implementation due to poor planning or lack of experience. Failing to create an efficient plan is dangerous. Many companies do not select software that meets their needs. The key to a successful project implementation is to take the time to evaluate the company’s needs and plan for success. System implementation begins once an organization has acquired the system and continues through early stages following the go-live date. System implementation processes must be supported by the senior executive team and be viewed as an organizational priority. An implementation team must be organized when planning for the implementation of a new system. The role and function of the team is to coordinate budget plans and manage aspects of the system implementation. The implementation team must include a system champion. A system champion is someone who sees the new system as necessary to the organization in order to achieve goals this person is also well respected within the organization.

According to Bharadwaj, Keil, Mahring (2009) “Although IT systems are likely to differ in the strategic value to the organization, they nevertheless cause significant disruptions to a firm’s business operations when they fail.” Some parties involved in the implementation failure at Memorial Health Systems did not work well as a team. The system champions Fred Dryer and Joe Roberts did not take into consideration how physicians felt about their workload increasing with the adoption of the CPOE system. There was no determining the scope of the project and its achievements. Other fundamental activities excluded from the project include conversion, proper staff training, workflow and process analysis, and communications. Changes Made to Eliminate Indicator Effects
There were many indicators within the case study that lead to the project failure at Memorial Health Systems. The indicators are lack of belief in the project, insufficient leadership support, lack of candor, initiative undernourishment, and organizational inertia. There are ways the implementation team could have avoided project failure at Memorial Health. The objectives of the CPOE system needed to be clear. The objectives and initiatives needed to be communicated and tested with organizational members.
All staff concerns or debates should be welcomed. Being honest and communicating efficiently could have saved the CPOE project. The main factor of the project failure is lack of solid management. The original system champions Fred Dryer and Joe Roberts quit their position at Memorial Health before the project was completed. Instead of welcoming bad news the new CIO Dr. Melvin Sparks did not want to hear it. According to Gardner (2000) “Companies continue to invest heavily in IT solutions in hopes of improving operating efficiency and combating the effects of downsizing.” Conclusion

Strong leadership and welcoming of good and bad news are also important. Listening to criticism will help leaders work on what can be done to make the implementation process easier for those who will be affected.
