When doing a formal, informal essay or a research paper, there are two major styles that one
can format it in, those two styles being the MLA or APA style. When approaching the paper one
must decide which style there going to use due to the fact that both the MLA and APA styles
have many differences from each other in many ways. Both MLA and APA are different when it
comes to the way your paper is actually set up, the way that you set up your sources at the end
of the paper, and in footnotes/end notes/in text citation. The type of essay a person is going to
write will determine what style they will use.
When starting your paper you have to begin with the page set up before you can continue on,
and when comparing the page set up of MLA format to the style of the APA format is when you
notice the differences both have from each other. In the top left corner of the page must
include your first and last name, as well as the name of the professor that you are writing the
paper to. The top left corner must also include the date and the course code. On the top right
corner of every page is were the page number goes, you also put the last name of the person

who is writing the paper before the number of the page. It is good to know that when writing
the paper that it should be written double spaced. The title of the paper you are writing is
usually in the middle of the paper before you start writing your paper. You should include your
citation of all the sources you have retrieved your proof or things to back up your thesis. Unlike
MLA, the APA style is much different with there page layout. In the APA style format, a title is
included, and on the title page is were you put such things like running head for publication
purposes, a title, and byline. Following up the title page is when the page number and running
heading is. On the top upper right hand corner of each page is were you include things like a 1-2
word version of the title. Next follows the title and with five spaces and then followed by the
page number. An abstract is included which is a 75-100 word overview of the paper written and
should be on a separate sheet of paper.
When writing your paper, you will gather information from other sources that will prove your
statement or thesis, and when setting up your sources at the end of your paper, MLA and APA
do there’s a bit different from each others. For MLA, you cite sources when you quote material
being that you took something word for word from a text and used it in your paper to help back
up your thesis. They also cite when something is slightly reworded or paraphrased information,
and when including statistics or findings from a survey or study. They as well cite when
incorporating facts, ideas or opinions that are not common knowledge. For MLA when using a
direct quote from a source in your paper after the quote you must put in brackets the name of
the person or source you got the quote from. At the end of your paper on a separate sheet of
paper is where you cite the book and its publication, the year that the source was created and
other information that goes with the source that should be dooly noted. Unlike MLA, the APA
style when it comes to citing work is mainly done by referencing. The APA format references

there work to verify quotations, and to enable readers to follow up and read more fully the
cited authors argument. When referencing a source for a book, you put the book first, then you
put the authors name and then the year, followed up by the page number. This format allows
you to reference more than one author as well as no authors when you use information from
other sources.
When writing your paper or when you are done writing your paper, it is good to make things
such as footnotes, end notes, and in text citations, and when looking at both styles you see that
they do there’s differently. When looking at the MLA format, there are no endnotes/footnotes
really i there is just usually your paper and then the citations, but the is in text citations when
you talk about things like quotes. APA on the other hand, there are things like footnotes, end
notes. For example you talk about the abstract the goes along with your paper that is 75-100
words over viewing your essay, as well as the citations and references at the the end of the
paper. MLA format doesn’t really pay attention to things like foot notes and end notes when
APA format does.
So in conclusion, it is good to know of the differences between the MLA format and APA
format when approaching to write a paper. MLA and the APA format are different for the actual
page set up, the way they set up there sources, and such things as footnotes and end notes.
One must know what type of paper they are writing, cause knowing that will help them choose
which style they are better off using.
