Education, as it is, is a continuous process of learning. In this sense man, himself, in search of this has turned to education for several years to improve not just his knowledge and understanding but also to develop skills for his benefits and also his fellow men likewise to what the previous ancestors has done it.
During the pre-colonial period, the Philippine ancestors implemented their ways of educating the youth such as administering and instructing the children of their functions and traditional academics by the use of their oral tradition which was passed on from one generation to another until such time that the Philippines was colonized by foreign countries. These countries include the Spanish and Americans, wherein they also contributed in the improvements of the traditional education system, making it more organized and systematized. They established schools in different parts of the island, trained the qualified teachers and established the education sector known as the Department of Education. Through this sector different curriculums and educational programs were implemented which has focused on different aspects such as skills training, knowledge and values that enable learners to become caring, productive and patriotic citizens.1 (Wikipedia)
But unfortunately it was such a hardship to produce the needed qualified students on the past years. These made the educational systems underwhelm in addition to the continuous declination of student performance which remained less than it should be. This turned out to be a problem where some have already been calling for the kind of reform that would finally see the country’s education system out of crisis. On this sense, as of the school year 2011-2012, the Department Of Education has implemented another educational system known as the K+12 program which includes a new curriculum for all schools through-out the country. This is the plan of the Department Of Education to restructure the country’s basic education system to manage the recent malfunctioning educational system. It aims to further improve the quality of education in the Philippines and allow the students to be more globally competitive by adding two more years to the ten years of basic education that the students spend on school. The implementation of this said program has aroused different arguments and criticism –both with and against it.
