The code of ethics which reverberated within my mind was the American Counseling Association’s Code of Ethics. ACA goes into more depth about principles that new up and coming counselors and professional should focus on. ACA emphasizes on the cultural context of making ethical decisions. It is important that counselors increase conscious ways to apply ethical standards from a perspective that recognizes and respects diversity, because we work in a pluralistic world (ACA, 2006).
Code Similarities
The comparison among the ACA and the AMHCA code of ethics each provide education, supervision, and administration when creating ethical judgments for its constituents (ACA, 2005; AMHCA, 2010).
The code of ethics for ACA and AMHCA covers a vast array of moral and specialized issues that are customary for the new practicing scholar and practitioner professionals. For instance, Allison did not having the proper knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) in cross-cultural counseling, relating to case study 19: “The Case of the Well-Meaning Feminist”. The 28 year old student, Allison, who was counseling a 19-year old Latina, named Carmen; it is apparent that she was not knowledgeable about the Latina culture. Had Allison been properly trained in the Latina culture, she would have been aware of the important role played by Carmen’s father and the family (Herlihy & Corey, 2006).
Another similarity is the obligations of the student, its employees, and the relationship of the supervisor; which are comparable in each code of ethics and highlights that it is unethical to employ any relationships with co-workers (ACA, 2005; AMHCA, 2010).

In many facilities I have worked in; it is unethical to engage in relationships at work. Relationships in the work place could possibly cause discord and conflict among employers and employees. Code Differences
While there is similitude in ACA and AMHCA codes of ethics there is difference as well. The most noticeable difference is how infringements concerning the code of ethics are delivered between each association and its systems. The ACA code of ethics categorizes procedures when administering violations concerning ethics (ACA, 2005).
The AMHCA does not “examine nor arbitrate ethical grievances” (AMHCA, 2010, p. 18); however, the
organization may take action concerning memberships, according to licensure and the involvement by other authorities (AMHCA, 2010).
There are diverse codes of ethics that guide the counseling professionals; providing counselors with a number of principles for ethical practices. However, there is the possibility that counselors may have to apply a mixture of these codes when conveying counseling services to clients. Consequently, balancing codes of ethics and incorporating the models into certified system is a necessary competence for the ethical practitioner.
