Thesis Statement
The challenges and the changes of Toronto has in the pass, present and future as one of the most modern cities with multicultural and most immigration city in the world which leading its track toward a right or wrong direction.
Introduction
Canada claims that Toronto city is the largest immigrant city in the country, with the 2006 census stating that almost exactly half of Toronto’s urban population is foreign-born. And Toronto is the 3rd largest immigrant cities around the world. Canada has been taking steps in recent years to attract young people to the country, to ease up the potential issues with the aging workforce and making it an extremely attractive proposition for young and ambitious people. With 1.2 million foreigners having settled in Toronto, it has became one of the most diverse urban centers in the world. It claims to be one of the safest cities in the world as well with the amount of population and the development.
Also, there are numerous carnivals, festivals and different cultural celebrations event going on in the city annually, so it really does deserve its place on this top immigrant list within Canada. Also, Toronto is also listed in “the best cities to live in” at ranking number sixteen in 2010. Besides these facts mentioned above, there are also some information proving the changes of Toronto since decades ago. In the research paper, I will mainly be focusing on 3 different aspects to discuss Toronto. I will talk about the history of Toronto up to the World War II, the changes since the 19th century, and the present circumstance of its changes.

First aspect
People have lived in the Toronto region on the north shore of Lake Ontario for almost 11,000 years since the first nation people moved to here from the south after the ice age. They had direct contacted with Europeans, who arrived in the 17th century, and the French built small trading posts during the 18th, but the existence of the urban community did not occur until the British troops and colonies started. Nevertheless, the settlement expanded quickly after 1815 because of its importance as the colonial capital, which also attracted institutions with mass interests, such as banks and schools. In 1853, the first trains left Toronto, the shape of a recognizably modern city had shown, with distinct residential and commercial neighborhoods, gas lighting, piped water, and many notable buildings were constructed. By 1901, the established industrial, commercial, financial, and institutional center had a population of 200,000, and rose to 680,000 by 1940. Because of the development of the city, it had contributed a lot to the country from different direction which also brought the country into World War I and II. (mentioned the contribution in the second aspect).
There were 13,000 Toronto soldiers died in Europe during WWI from 1914 to 1918. (See WWI timeline in the reference pages) twenty years later, the troops again left union station to protect the country against the German and over 40,000 Canadian died in WWII from 1939 to 1945. Second Aspect
At the beginning of the mid 19th century, Industrialization also helped the city to expand and grow greatly after Confederation in 1867, and Toronto had contributed significantly to shaping the city’s environment and prosperity. During these years, Toronto began to compete with Montreal as the nation’s primary centre, not only economically, but also culturally. Eventually, the total population exceeded Montreal’s in 1976, and the city had become Canada’s most important economic and cultural generator.

As late as the 1940s, Toronto’s population was largely increased due to the baby boom, and mostly British Canadian. In the great 20th century conflicts contributed to dramatic increases in the city’s economic, industrial, and technological enterprises as well as in breaking through social and cultural barriers such as the presence of increasing numbers of women in the workforce. Although, female workers were still performing some basic tasks at beginning, but the change as the presence of female workers were pretty significantly in the historical meaning of Toronto and Canada.
Besides the prosperity, the residents of Toronto also faced numerous other challenges during the 20th century, ranging from the poverty suffered by many families across the generations to the shorter-term disaster of the Great Depression. After suffered from the great depression, the government had started to develop more in the city in different dimensions. Such as the subway system, parks and drainage projects were developed and arterial roads constructed. In 1967 small suburbs were combined, leaving an embryo Metro structure of the modern city of Toronto and also 5 boroughs was established and populations were highly increased.
Third Aspect
By year 2001, Toronto had become one of the most multicultural and most immigration cities on the planet, where over 150 languages including dialect are spoken in the harmony environment. According to the census, there are more than half of Toronto’s 2.5 million residents were born outside Canada. These post-war decades also divided the compact city which burst its boundaries like many other North America cities. People started to consume some of Canada’s best farmland and so far beyond into the suburbs communities called ‘Golden Horseshoe’ of Ontario.
As Canada’s economic capital, Toronto is considered a first world city by the Globalization and World Cities study group and also it is one of the top financial centres in the world. Toronto’s leading economic sectors include finance, business services, telecommunications, aerospace, transportation, media, arts, film, television production, publishing, software production, medical research, education, tourism and sports. Also, The Toronto Stock Exchange which the world’s eighth largest stock market in terms of its market value also headquartered in the city and along with the most Canadian corporate headquarters of a major Canadian city. The city keeps in expanding its ability and becoming one of the multifunctional metropolises in the world.

In conclusion, Today’s Toronto is a large and complex urban centre. Just like any similarly large city around the world, it faces important challenges and competing opinions on how to face and handle them. At the same time, Toronto continues to flourish as a great exciting city, embracing a strong and prospering economy, rich cultural underlying. It is still remaining its long heritage as relatively safe, orderly, and international inclusive communities. Toronto has played a good role of culture diversity in history, now and would be in the future. Even though there were some unpleasant events happened in the pass, overall the city is on its track of what most people want it be.
