With the use of research writing in more and more industries, the research paper has to be more effective in addressing its issues and audience. We want these papers to be concise, informative, and appealing to its target audience. With this, there are now more details to address and rules to adhere to which is why a writing process, such as the one we have discussed, gives the writer an important backbone to creating an effective research paper or project.
Writing can be a tedious endeavour and there exists no shortcut or template to easily accomplish this, but with the right tools, techniques, and understanding of the subject, the writer will be able compose a research paper that will efficiently convey its point. To create an effective paper, the writer should consider these four steps: Research, Outlining, Drafting, and Revising/Editing/Proofreading. But, firstly the writer should assess whether this research paper should be an argumentative or analytical essay.
An argumentative research paper deems to contest an existing idea through the presentation of newfound evidence that would support it. In this case the topic should be debatable or controversial, and should assume a stance that the writer should defend through well-researched claims. On the other hand, an analytical research paper deems to present a new idea derived from the exploration and evaluation of the given material. The writer should also consider who its audience is. Should he or she address the general public, or the academic community?

In knowing this, the writer sets the tone and breadth of the paper’s discussion. With these first steps accomplished, the writer should then begin research in order to broaden his or her knowledge on the topic. One key factor to a smooth writing process is a thorough understanding of the subject. This process of understanding can be attained through comprehensive research that entails going through books, scholarly journals, and other legitimate sources to gain enough knowledge and information on the subject.
Should there be not enough or adequate data found in these publications, a thorough primary research using surveys and other information-gathering tools should be employed. But, with all these information, the writer should be able to learn how to evaluate them in order to use only those that are needed, and manage it to for easier citation. With all the preliminary information gathered, the writer then sets to create a thesis statement and an outline of the research paper that would serve as the framework for the research. The thesis statement basically maintains the point upon which the paper is grounded upon.
Depending on the genre of the paper, it should take a particular stance that can be affirmed by the research and evidence. The outline, on the other hand, is the plan through which the writer hopes to discuss the thesis statement. This also helps the writer to create a logical arrangement of the information that would best support his or her thesis. Now, following the given thesis statement and outline, the writer begins to make a first draft of the research paper. The draft should, more or less, resemble the final outcome of the paper and should reflect the thesis statement properly.
When writing the outline and paper, the writer should follow the basic formula of dividing the paper into three parts: Introduction, the Body, and the Conclusion. The Introduction should consist of a definitive hook, the thesis statement, and a roadmap to where the paper will eventually go. The hook should be able to interest the readers to read the entire paper. The Introduction should also clearly state the thesis of the paper, and should show how the writer would accomplish this by giving the reader a roadmap of the arguments.

The Body of the work should then discuss these arguments in detail, bearing in mind the need for a logical sentence and paragraph structure. Once all arguments have been discussed, it should be summarized in the Conclusion wherein the writer would piece everything together in order to maintain the thesis of the paper. Proper citation is also a must in an effort to avoid plagiarism. It is good for the writer to proofread the draft first so as to lessen any need for revisions. To do so, he or she should take some time off from writing in order to read the paper with a fresh eye.
Carefully, the writer should go through it, eliminating grammatical errors and lapses in logic. In Revising, too, the writer should analyze the paper and see which of its parts need further adjustments in order to make the discussion more concise and direct. With these in mind, I find that the most effective aspects to consider and to take seriously in research writing are the conducting and evaluation of research. These two parts represent the biggest chunk of one’s writing and determine the pace towards the completion of the project.
Honing one’s skill in these, especially in evaluating the sources, one would be able to find it easier to create sound arguments backed by scholarly information. I also found that managing information also plays an important aspect in this process. It particularly helped me in my writing since I can easily access the information that I need for the paper. This is why I find that research process is my strength as I enjoy collecting data and managing them to suit the needs of my research paper. I’ve also come to enjoy the knowledge one gains through the scouring of books and other publications.
At the same time, I find that looking for legitimate sources and citing them is my particular weakness. I find it hard to properly cite my sources since I’ve always relied on my understanding of the material and stock knowledge. But, now that I have gained insight into the proper writing procedure, I know that I can curb this habit. Overall, writing can be considered a task, but with these processes, writers and students such as myself are able to organize our work and create effective papers that will capture our readers and impart to them our knowledge.
