CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
All of us learn about a stimulus by the flow of information through our five senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. However, each of us receive, organize, and interprets this sensory information in an individual way (Kotler, 1989:32) that is why to people with the same motivation in the same situation that may act quite differently according to their perceptions.
Nursing is one of the professions that requires its graduates to take licensure examination before he or she is legally qualified to practice nursing and be called a nurse in the Philippines , nursing graduates are required to take the nursing licensure exam(NLE), nurse licensure examination is important to every aspiring nurse. It serves as the “gate” that lead the way towards legal aspect of becoming a registered nurse. All the knowledge and skills that a student learned in their four years of education will be put into final test that will measure their competencies as a novice nurse. The performance of nursing graduates in the licensure
examination may also serve as an evaluation of the quality of education the school of nursing offers to its students. In passing the Nurse Licensure Examination one must have a good, if not the best, foundation of the nursing program. It does not necessarily mean that one has to memorize everything, but what matters most is to understand deeper and analyze each situation presented in the examination. And also the students must be ready not only in their mental ability but in their emotion and physical aspect.
According to Article IV section 12 of R.A. NO. 9173, all applicants for license to practice nursing shall be required to pass a written examination , which shall be given by the board of nursing in such places and dates as maybe designated by the commission, provided that it shall be in .this examination is known to be the Philippine nurse’ licensure examination , otherwise known as the local board exam.
As mentioned in section 13, in order to be admitted to the examination for nurses, an applicant must, at the time of filling his/her application, establish to the satisfaction of the board. First, he/she is a citizen of the Philippines, or a citizens or subject of a country which permits Filipino nurses to practice with in its territorial limits on the same basis as the subject or citizen of such country: provided, that the requirements for the registration or licensing of nurses in said country are substantially the same as those prescribed in the act. Then, he/she is good of moral character. Last, he/she is a holder of a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a college or university that complies with the standards of nursing education duly recognized by the proper government agency. Section 15 states that in order to pass the examination, an examinee must obtain a general average of at least seventy five percent (75%) with a rating not below sixty percent (60%) in any five test subjects. An examinee that obtains an average rating of 75% o higher but gets a rating below 60% in any subject must take the examination again, but only in the subjects where he/she is rated below 60%.in section 14, the scope of the examination was stated. It will be a 5 part of examination. To be a nurse first you need to pass the NLE a 500 item multiple choice exam to test basic nursing level competency which considers the objectives of a nursing curriculum, the broad
areas of nursing and other related disciplines and competencies (RodisRodel 2007-04-07) it is held every June and December annually in various public schools throughout the Philippines. (RA NO. 9173 Supreme Court E- lib retrieved 2007-05-24).
The ultimate goal of any freshly graduated nurse in the Philippines to successfully pass the Nursing Licensure Examination (NLE) being administered by the Philippine Profession Regulation Commission Board of Nursing. It is the ultimate gauge of everything and nurse has learned during his academe years with consideration of both theoretic and clinical skills. It tops onto the would- be nurse’s capacity, and it will determine if the graduate nurse possesses the knowledge and skill needed to successfully and safely render the professional standards of care for his client.
The Philippine nurse licensure examination is often the graduate nurse’s dreaded day as it is the day that the graduate realizes that will ultimately decide whether he or she is to become a practicing nurse, or not. Nursing is a regulated profession and if one does not pass this examination, one can never put into practice all the things one has learned and trained for there are some tips on how to get over the tension and anxiety for the upcoming NLE:(1)do not assume that u will know everything on the exams. Your academe has guided you theoretically and clinically but the NLE will test your practicality and a lot of the questions are situational: (2) it is perfectly normal to feel nervous. Before answering questions, PUASE for a bit, PRAY, close your eyes, an inhale and exhale deeply;(3) DO NOT intimidated if the examinees next to you some from “BIG UNIVERSITIES”. Only the student alone can ever be responsible for your own. DO your best. Do not rush; (4) always make sure to have lots of pencils and a sharpener. As much as possible, DO NOT erases. Mind your shading. Shade clearly and carefully; (5) have faith on yourself; (6) take your time but make sure to finish within allotted time period. RELAX; (7) eat before taking the exam. Your brain needs all the glucose it can get; (8) analyze each question, learned the art of multiple choice elimination. If choices are composed of two extremely opposite ideas, one of two is probably the correct answer. If choices is composed of similar but differently stated ideas, neither of them is the correct answer; (9) if
you found yourself thinking too much about one question, skip, then go back; (10) if a question asks for the best thing to do, BEST approach, pick the most ideal and book-based choice;(11) if the question asks for the FIRST thing to do, use TRIAGE. The most ideal is not necessarily the best answer. Remember emergency nursing (JDGopez R.N. 2012-10-05).
Considering that after four years of being a nursing students must take the nursing board exam although they are facing some of the common stressors such as anxiety and nervous, insomnia, loss of appetite and feel of not being ready to take the nursing licensure exam. But, being a graduated nursing student they have to overcome.
Overcome means they have to face the NLE positively in order succeed. Being optimistic have a self confidence, readiness the NLE and knowledgeable enough in the field of study, and lastly to do all this things with a prayer to our GOD.
The examinee should be prepared biophysically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally and psychologically. Active studying is the best key to be knowledgeable in order for them to pass. There are some study tips to ensure how the examinee will pass the upcoming Nursing Licensure Examination:1st read and study the books with analysis and put it into your mind and familiarize; 3rd, set the best time for studying and make a time table; 4th choose a place conducive for studying; 5th always have a review during your vacant time;6th write and post your schedule; 7th make flashcards and other visual aids; 8th stick your schedule and reward yourself; and lastly, have a strong faith to our God, believe that prayers can do. The perception that” if others can do, why not their self? It may lure the student to become more desperate to do responsively in terms of Nursing Licensure Examination.
To all those who will be taking the Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination (NLE) there are few secrets to succeed; 1st, never forget God. Pray, pray, pray. Also, do not simply memorize. It is important to understand the concepts for most of the questions in the exam require analysis. I also suggest that you balance work and play. It is never really healthy for you
to study nonstop. But it is not good to disregard your studies in exchange for pleasure. So learn to balance these two. FOCUS and DISCIPLINE are also very essential (R.T Dotingco-Lim 2012-27-08).

CHAPTER III
THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK
Perception is a process of the consciousness of an object or a thing. It is one of the means of valid knowledge in the world and consists in an inseparable relation of the perceptive consciousness with its content. Psychologist Darly Bem proposed a self-perception theory.” It’s asserts that people develop their attitudes by observing their behavior and concluding what attitudes must have caused them”. The theory is counterintuitive in nature, as the conventional wisdom is that attitudes come prior to behavior. Furthermore, the theory suggests that a person induces attitudes without accessing internal cognition and mood states. The person reasons their own
overt behaviors rationally in the same way they attempt to explain others behavior. Bem used a series of employed self-perception theory to try to reduce anxiety in heterosocially anxious or shy college students. This theory helps to determine BSN graduating students behaviors need to assess. Evidence for the self-perception theory has also been seen in real life situation. After teenagers participated in repeated and sustained volunteering services their attitudes were demonstrated to have shifted to be more serious, more caring and considerate towards others.
In order to receive information from the environment we are equipped with sense organs example: eyes, ears, nose. Each sense organ is part of a sensory system which receives sensory inputs and transmits sensory information to the brain.
A particular problem for psychologist is to explain the process by which the physical energy received by sense organs forms the basis of perceptual experience. Sensory inputs are somehow converted into perceptions of desks and computers, flowers and buildings, cars and planes; into sights, sounds, smells, taste and touch experiences.
A major theoretical issue on which psychologist are divided is the extent to which perceptions relies directly on the information present in the stimulus some argue that perceptual processes are not direct, but depends on the perceiver’s expectations and previous knowledge as well as the information available in the stimulus itself.
This controversy is discussed with respect to Gibson(1966) who has proposed a direct theory of perception which is a” bottom-up” theory, and Gregory(1970) who has proposed a constructivist (indirect) theory of perception which is a “top down” theory.
Psychologists distinguish between two types of processes in perception: bottom – up processing and top-down processing.
CHAPTER IV
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
The research methodology is scheme to be followed in gathering and analyzing data. This chapter of research locale, research method, sampling procedure, research instrument, data collection and data treatment.
Research Locale
This study was conducted at LSSTI it was formally established on July6 08, 1998 in Abaga, Lala, Lanao Del Norte. LSSTI has an area of three hectares site. Specifically, the study conducted in BSN IV only. It is consist of 27 students.
Research Method
A descriptive method was used in the study since it dealt with the perception of the BSN IV who are about to take the NLE. Descriptive method research was defined as the research was consists of a set of gathered data information, analyzed, summarized and interpreted according to lines of study [Boyd, 1997].
Research Subject and Sampling Procedure
In nursing department, there are 37 BSN IV enrolled in this semester school year 2012-2013 with only (1) section. The researchers prefer to select all the BSN IV students enrolled in this said class as respondents. However, there are only 27 students who became the respondents because the ten (10) remaining students are the researchers.
Research Instrument
A researcher made questionnaire as the principal instrument used in this study, a questionnaire was composed of two (2) parts used in this study, 1st part used to determined how the BSN IV perceived NLE and the common
stressors that LSSTIans nursing students need to face, 2nd how will they overcome the common stressors that they going to encounter. Questionnaire made use of open-ended and dichotomous. The questions are in English language.
Data Collection Procedure
The data gathered from both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources were gathered from the questionnaires which were personally distributed to the 27 respondents and retrieved right after filling up. While the secondary sources comprised of books, others reading materials, unpublished thesis and internet access.
Data treatment
Statistical tools such as frequency and percentage distribution and weighted mean were used in the study for the tabulation, analysis, and interpretation of the data gathered. The weighted mean was computed in determining averages verbal interpretations were as follows:
Formula:
Percentage f (100) = %
N
Where:
f – Number of respondents
N – Total number of respondents
Weighted mean: X = ∑fxi
N
Where:
f – Frequency
i – Score
x – Responses
N – Sample size
