Norman Cousins’ book Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient is the story of one man’s ablity to overcome the typical medical model of dealing with a disability, and how the mind is an amazing healing tool. This book is not just about Norman’s disability, bu also about his belief that if you want something bad enough, you can get it. I found this book particulatly interesting because I am currently trying get off my allergy medication, and cure myself through natural methods. I think this book is inspiring, and enables the reader to believe that they are the only ones in control of their health.
When most people get sick, they go to a doctor, or medicine cabinet, to get well again. Our society has put our health in the hands of a group of people that studied generic people, and “what if” scenerios for a few years years. Most doctors hae taken very few psychologyu classes, and even less compassion lessons. We put our trust in these people to heal us, and take away our pain and suffering. We are programmed like Pavlov;s dog to salivate at the sight of that white piece of paper with unlegible writing. We believe that what this little paper says will provide the end to our sickness. In many cases, this is true, and the medicine helas us, and we go about our lives. Now, what happens when we have a sickness that no medicine can kill. We have been so conditioned to need medicine, that our entire world collapses when we discover pills cant help. Who do we go to? What do we do? Life is over! Without someone elses help, we cannot possible get better. This is where Norman Cousins’ thinking comes in handy. He says that there IS hope for you, and that you don’t need those pills.
