In the book “Deaf in America,” by Carol Padden and Tom Humphries, the two deaf authors share many stories, jokes, and translations of signed poems and signed performances.
The first couple of chapters tells stories of what it is like to grow up being deaf in both a hearing and deaf families. It brought up many points I never even considered, such as a story about a boy named Sam. His whole family was deaf and when he was about six he would play with the neighbor who was hearing. At first he thought she was odd because she did not understand his language. Later he saw her mom and her conversing by moving their mouths. He went home to his mom and asked what kind of affliction the neighbor has, his mom then explained that they are the people that are different and not the neighbors. She also explained that most people communicate by talking and not signing. I never really thought about how a deaf person realizes that they are deaf and this was a very interesting story to me.
I also learned from this book that the “father of sign language” was not only french but also hearing. I never would have imagined it to be a hearing person. The book also told the story of why he came to invent sign language. He happened upon two deaf sisters who were unable to communicate with each other and realized that his life mission was to help other people like these women.
I also read the story of a deaf boy hunting in the woods surrounding his house in Georgia during the Civil War. He ran into two soldiers who thought he was a spy playing deaf. They were going to hang him when their leader came. They explained that this was a spy playing deaf. He knew sign language due to his brother so he spoke with the boy, realized he was truly deaf, and let him go free. These are just a few of the stories I read about in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book because I learned more about deaf people and their culture. I felt as if I could truly understand how it would be to be deaf from reading this book.
The Term Paper on Outline for a Story Book
I propose to design a book for children 7 to 8 years old. In this modern world of technology, books are set aside in favor of computers and other highly technical gadgets.
