For me Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is a prophet for the future. Unfortunately it is a real one. The book describes a lurid picture of our world a world where books are burned. Heinrich Heine once said that Where they have burned books, they will end in burning human beings. It is also necessary to consider that the book was written after Hitlers deeds became familiar to the world (Nuremberg trails).
In our book we have a similar example a woman burned with her books. Bradbury compares the Nazis (a dreadful past) with firemen burning people and books (a horrible future).
Our setting is everywhere. It is mentioned that the story takes place in America but it can happen everywhere. TV’s are sold everywhere and soap operas are watched everywhere. The time period is the future but the begging of this dreadful vision is today we watch soap operas all the time and we dont see the danger. In this essay youll see the warning of Bradbury which is expressed in his book. “Bradbury’s acount of this insane world, which bears many alarming resemblances to our own is fascinating” (The New York Times).
His prophet is delivered by the main characters in the book. As soon as people will be afraid of becoming like some of the characters, the world will be saved from Disaster. The common image in Bradbury’s world is represented by Mildred. Mildred is not the most important character, but she is very important for understanding the world Bradbury describes. She is very shallow and her life is based on “Family” (“Family” is a very famous soap opera).
The Term Paper on Soap Opera Women Operas Audience
To what extent can it be said that British soaps address and dramatis e the class and gender realities of the lives of their audience? By MAROON AHMED Throughout the history of public service and commercial television the mainstay of its success and a massive ratings winner, none more so than in the latter 25-30 years of its existence, has been the immense popularity of soap operas. Soap operas ...
Mildred has a conflict of interests with her husband Guy Montag. In fact Montag has a conflict of interests with society.
Mildred can not have a conflict of interests- she is to shallow for that. She can’t think properly, so she can’t argue for values. She doesn’t have any. For example, Mildred takes a full bottle of sleeping balls- without even noticing. She didn’t do it for suicide reasons. When someone wants to suicide he feels bad.
Mildred can not feel bad, for Mildred can not feel at all. She doesn’t have any feelings. “The virgin Israel has fallen down and will not get up again. She is abandoned on her own land, between the prostitutes, with no one to get her get up”. (King James Bible Translation, Book of Amos, chapter V verse II).
Clarisse McClellan was “the virgin Israel”.
She was different from the society. She was part of the minority. Today, when we say minority we mean ethnic or political groups. But Clarisse was other kind of minority. She was only a piece of a small group of people who dared to think. They dared to contemplate situations in life. But they were criminals. Therefore they escaped to the woods and survived. Clarisse didnt understand she is a criminal.
She stayed and lived among the other people- and she died. People like Clarisse can not live with people like Mildred. When a person has a conflict with the society- he can run away from the society. But when he has a conflict with himself he has two solutions: either he dies or he becomes a madman. Capitan Beatty had a conflict with himself. Beatty seemed to be the spirit of the people- a fireman, a Capitan, a polymath and a wonderful public figure.
Beatty’s nature is being discovered in his speech to Montag. The speech seems very simple- it explains why reading is damage. But the most important thing we find out is the fact the Beatty thinks, Beatty is profound. His explanations are wonderful. One of his explanations says that reading is a cause for wars. The black people are angry because of “Sambo Nigger” burn it. The white people are angry because of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”- burn it.
The Essay on Are People in Modern Society Losing Their Moral Values?
Are people in modern society losing their moral values? People in modern society are losing their moral values. There are three reasons to support my statement. These reasons are that materialism could affect negatively on people’s moral values, public manners could influence on people’s moral values, and the internet could influence moral values. First of all, materialism could affect negatively ...
This is Beatty’s problem. He doesn’t know if he is right of if the other side of him is right. Deep down he knows that he lives in a wretched society- and he knows he has to survive. He fights against himself. His fight is only a small part in the eternal struggle between values and survival. It is a fight between the will to be yourself and living in the jungle.
During my life I learned that you may not be yourself- you must act according to the society and I may claim that Beatty’s story my proof. In Beatty’s case the common sense was stronger than the survival instinct- Beatty died. He wanted to die; almost glad the end had come. What is a present? For me, it is a result of the past and a warning for the future. Clarisse told Montag a tail of a past where people were not afraid and Clarisse didn’t survive- for she lived in the past. Then he met a professor who told him of a future in which people cold think- that professor was Faver.
Albert Einstein’s way to success was imagination. He stood for imagination and said it is the path for science. Faver also imagined. He had a dream of a free world. In fact, no one can claime that Faver lived in a world without freedom. There were laws like in any democratic country and one of the laws forbade reading books.
Faver and other people had the right to do everything. They had the right to move, the right to speak etc. If Faver lived under dictatorship there won’t be any problem with the vision of a free world. But Faver lived under democratic law, so there’s a problem with the vision of free world. There’re two solutions to this problem. An origin, freedom is not an unequivocal meaning.
For the prisoner it means getting out of prison and for some people freedom means death. For Faver, freedom was the right to read and to think. In addition to this, Faver was a criminal according to their laws. Therefore Faver was not free. It is hard to say who the main character in this book is. For me it is Beatty, but that is Montag who is supposed to be.
The Essay on Montag Books Tells Faber
Guy Montag is the main character in the novel Fahrenheit 451. Montag s job is a fireman but a different kind of fireman they are supposed to find houses with books in them, and to destroy them. The homes in which books are found are also burned and the person who has the books is sent to jail. In the beginning, Guy Montag seems to like his job Then one day he meets a girl named Clarisse Mcclellan, ...
“Behold I am against thee, saith the lord of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke and the sword shell devour thy young lions: and I will cut off the prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shell not more be heard” (King James Bible translation, book of Nahum, Chapter II, verse XIV).
Montag was a young lion. Montag was young, Montag was brazen and Montag had ideals. It is enough to be a “young lion”. There is a phenomenon within young people called maximalizem. Young people often have ideals and as long as they’re young they fight for their ideals and they dont want to compromise. “The flower kids” is a good example for it.
But brazenness is not good when it is outrageous. In Antigone, by Sophocles both Antigone and Kreon were punished because of their brazenness. Montag was punished to. Montag had a conflict with the society and it is dangerous. Chinua Achebe, a Nigerian writer, wrote about it in his wonderful book “Man of the People; once you go against the power- you’re punished. The prophet Nahum who was contemporized to the kings of Israel and Judah said ” and the sword shell devour thy young lions”. Montag’s maximalizem made him murder Beatty- and Montag had to escape to the woods.
If they find him, they will kill him and the people he is hiding with. Montag is like Cain- he has to escape from place to place. Montag carried on himself too much responsibility. He wanted Clarisse’s past and Faver’s future to become true. Montag failed his mission within one night. All he “succeeded” to do is becoming a refugee. And the society stayed as wretched and powerful as it was before.
Maybe Montag is right- but he is not smart. He acted fast, without thinking and he had too much self- confidence. Even more then professor Faver had. I dont have a direct proportion for the plot and I will summarize it shortly. The rising action, for me, is burning the old woman with her books. I think it is the rising action because here, Montag began to understand what kind of world he lives in.

Here Montag’s conflict with the society begins. The climax is the meeting with professor Faver. This meeting only added oil to the fire he was very angry with the society for burning the woman and Faver explained him how to get rid of the society. I do not think there is a falling action in the plot- because the conflict is not resolved. Becoming a refuge is not resolving a conflict. In conclusion, I would like to state my personal opinion about the book.
I, personally, liked it a lot and I read it seven times in two years. But it is hard to say weather I recommend it to others because some people actually agree with Mildred. A lot of people say that books are rubbish- so there is no point recommending this book to the wide world. And if a person is interested in this book – I am sure he will find it and read this book without my recommendation. This is the proper place to say thank you. First of all to my mother, who gave me this book two years ago. And I thank my English Teacher Mr. Raymond Revinski , for guiding me throw the process of writing the book report.
And I thank the author for writing this book and many others, and gave me the pleasure of reading them. Let us all hope that the world will listen to this book- and we will not be getting worse. Amen..
