In the following paragraphs they will detail both Goethe and Tolstoy’s characters. In Goethe’s story “Faust” the character Faust was tempted by the never-ending thirst for knowledge. While in Tolstoy’s story Pahom was tempted by more land and money and was never happy with what he had. They were both tempted with greed just different types. Faust was followed around by Mephistopheles the whole story but in “How Much Land Does a Man Need?” Pahom was only haunted by the devil once.
But in both stories Mephistopheles and the Devil both tempted the characters to want more and tricked them into doing what they wanted. The difference between the two stories is that Faust knew what he was dealing with and what he was getting into. He signed a contract with his own blood but Pahom never knew it was the Devil.
