Guns, Germs, and Steel Book Report
“Many are called but few are chosen”, said Saint Matthews in Guns, Germs, and Steel. I believe Dr. Diamond perfectly described and supported his argument with evidence from the past and the present. The author not only paints a wonderful portrait of the last thirteen thousand years but, also, explains the concepts in extreme clarity and depth. In spite of that, there is no purpose of writing a book without a purpose, thus, the reason for creating Guns, Germs, and Steel was to answer one simple question with one of the most controversial answers. “Why is it that you white people developed so much more cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?” This was a question specific question to New Guinea but, why did different continents evolve differently than others is how Jared Diamond answers the the question throughout the book.
“Yalis Question,” was a simple question understandable and easily thought of yet, was severely complicated to plainly explain. This inquisition from Yali, called for “ultimate explanations,” and a wide view of the past. There are an immense amount of arguments that could possibly be offered as explanations, however, Jared Diamonds disarms several during his writing and continues to persuasively argue his own conclusion. Dr. Diamond adventures to the beginning of our civilization to include any slight evidence that could be easily overlooked. Thus, showcasing how small actions, for example, the beginning of human selection, created the world today.
The Essay on Guns Germs And Steel
Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond has a clear focus, seeking and convincingly providing the answer to the question "why did human development proceed at such different rates on different continents?" In other words, why did Columbus discover America and Pizarro conquer the Incas rather than the Inca "discovering" and conquering Europe? Why did Europe colonize Africa instead of vice versa? ...
In modern society we have jumped from boom boxes, invented in 1974 by Woelfel Brothers, to iPods, marketed in 2001 from a group of Apple employees, in less than a century. Guns, Germs, and Steel attempts to answer why in some countries have greater technological advantages than others and how that shaped todays world. There were multiple technological causes that assist in answering “Yali Question”, for instance, steel, animal domestication, food production, writing, guns, and germs.
Despite the enormous gap of time technologies importance has not only escalated but, has now become depended upon. In ancient times we were simple hunter and gathers, as stated in the book, yet were only armed with stone tools. Therefore, when Europeans developed steel they gained an immense advantage over other traditional hunter and gather groups. By creating weapons they began to conquer farther lands and possibly more populated locations. Thus, contributing to the long complex answer to “Yalis Question”.
Animal Domestication was by far one of the reasons why Spaniards and other civilizations were successful. Animals not only produce sicknesses that if you are raised with the germs you would become immune. But also, caused farming to become less of a hassle for farmers, made traveling far distances easier and war more efficient. Large animals were used to pull plows and fertilize the lands which in turn made farming more productive in less than ideal farmland. Having the ability to travel far distances was a a leap from only being able to travel with what you could carry yourself. One example is horses, these mammals where great for adventuring to unexplored lands you could flee quickly if you were threatened and could travel farther if you desired to trade. The Spaniards were very successful in conquering land because of their guns, germs and steel. What is excluded from that group is their large mammals called horses , that were trained to fight in war and were much like trick horses. Animals gave way to so many advantages that they will be mentioned several times throughout this book report.
Furthermore, another technological advantage that is a factor in the answer is farming. Food production, Jared Diamond claims, was most likely preformed unconsciously by pure innocence. The author claims that early hunter and gather societies selected crops that were most favorable this process was unknown at the time but, is now understood as human selection. The author does explain why there are successful food productions in other areas while other locations fail. Jared Diamond explain that people whose environment would not allow them to farm as productively as the others were at a disadvantage. Dr. Diamond also claims because people in hunter and gather societies, individuals were forced to focus on survival, they had no excess time for innovative ideas. This statement was a contributing factor because those groups with more food gained denser populations and then manufactured inventors, which as we know are very important.

Nevertheless, farming would never be as important as farms are today without those individuals who created the ancient tools. For example, the fact that there was no where to store the crops for long periods of time was a major dilemma that eventually became one of the most important necessity for farming. Another impacting gain was the plow which, was only made possible by the domestication of animals. Plows made working the dirt more productive and also, easier. Because of the stunted number of needed farmers more individuals had the ability to create ideas that could be useful such as the plow.
Language which as defined by Webster Dictionary as “words, their pronunciation, and the methods of combining them used and understood by a community”. I would have thought language and writing go hand and hand but, Guns, germs, and Steel describes that writing was not created at all for personal use. Nonetheless, writing was at first used for inventory purposes, thus, once some dedicated person thought to create an entire method of writing what people where speaking they civilization would surpass others by far. The members of the similar speaking languages could adopt the writing and could communicate accurately from large distances and even record important history. Unlike paintings, writing is able to describe more clearly what has, will and did not happen, writing could now record life. This advantage was essential because if not we would not know nearly enough about history, we could not avoid similar situations and certainly could not communicate with other civilizations around the globe.
The Essay on Gun Control People Crime Guns
Gun Control Since the early days, gun control has been a never-ending debate. It is because of the fast increase in crime, the fight for the right to own a hand gun, the introduction of legislation for gun control in order reduce the crime in the United States, that this issue has been hotly debated in recent years. The streets of America are now a war zone especially right here were we live. ? ...
Guns oppose to now was completely less important in their early creations but even so, they became more useful when there were groups of people with guns. An individual with a single gun was not extremely dangerous because the weapon was not as accurate as they are now and guns were also time consuming. Japan was forced by other developments of threats to create guns and abandon, then later on return what they rejected because Japan was forced their hand to defend , after creating the weapons. Guns did not necessarily gave any group of people a enormous advantage in the beginning but, if those groups continued to create better quality weapons the people would be rewarded. While one group was creating guns to conquer other lands, there were the hunter and gathers who continue to live their traditional ways and more than likely not advancing in their civilizations’. Guns were important in the past but there was an even major factor in the technological causes called germs.
In modern society germs are generally associated with disease and sickness. This misleading association was in my eyes created by what we are taught in history. In the past germs have caused epidemics and have murdered thousands. Therefore, when one civilization acquired the anti-bodies against a deadly sickness they were more likely to live through another epidemic while others died. This process of living is an example of Charles Darwins theory called “Survival of the Fittest”. Germs has a major role in the answer of why other civilizations developed differently then others.
Jared Diamond explains how those with domesticated animals were a straight path to obtaining sicknesses and living because of the close association with animals and their germs. For example, a simple flu for someone who has been raised in close range to animals, will not have the same deadly effect to those without the similar interaction. Those who have not been exposed to the illness and have not obtained the anti-bodies will more than likely die out while the individuals with resistance live to pass on their genetics. For instance, when the Spaniards defeated the Incas most of the deaths were due to the germs that they did not even know existed. This was a significance for the answer to “Yalis Question” because when civilizations were invaded they were generally killed by germs not by the hand of any one army.
The Term Paper on Friday Jan Gun Guns People
GUNS ARE BEST CONTROLLED BY GOOD AIM. Guns, like many other issues of the day, have two distinct opposing views with many people in the gray area. Even when looking at a tragic situation, people will have two opposite spins on it. For example, a suicidal madman on top of the Empire State Building kills six people including himself with a gun. Gun-control advocates think that outlawing guns would ...
In addition, there were political structures that caused the different continents to develop complex societies and then become more advanced than others. The abundance of food gave way to a surplus of individuals whose time was able to spent thinking up inventions that could possibly assist in the expansion of their people or improved production of their crops. For instance, the Spaniards were able to develop denser societies, thus, needing a political system to maintain their people. There were also other societies that obtain political systems but, that didn’t necessarily meant they thrived. We saw how great the Inca people were yet, Inca was exterminated by the Spaniards of course, there was the civil war, the small pox epidemic and the lack of steel that contributed to their fall. There are even civilizations today, who have a political structure, however, are still in dire need of constant assistance from other better develop countries.
Furthermore, military advancement was capable by people who have a political structure which as a result causes some societies to expand and conquer others. Also, having a political agenda allows a military to move united for a purpose that a greater force agrees on.
