I recently read Love, Lucy by Lucille Ball. It was an outstanding book all about Lucille Ball’s life and the highs and lows of her career. Love, Lucy is an autobiography that was uncovered by Lucie Desiree Arnaz, Lucille’s daughter, and an attorney after her death. A lot of the book is about how she started her career and got through the struggles that most aspiring actresses face. A great example of one of her struggles is the rare form of arthritis Lucille got towards the beginning of her career working for Hattie Carnegie as a model. Some of it also tells us all about her marriages to both Desi Arnaz and Gary Morton and how they influenced her life tremendously. The book starts out with her telling us about her childhood in Jamestown, New York, takes us through her life in New York City where she really started to work, and her life in Hollywood and many other places with Desi.
Lucille Ball was a funny woman with a lot of passion and drive. She was headstrong and never gave up on her dreams of being an actress, and that is why I think she wrote her story down. I think Lucille wanted everyone to realize we all have challenges we have to overcome just like her arthritis and her lack of natural talent when it came to singing and dancing, which led to her not being accepted to the John Murray Anderson-Robert Milton theater school. Love, Lucy is also directed towards young actresses trying to start their careers. Lucille writes, “Here’s what I advise any young struggling actress today: The important thing is to develop as a woman first, and a performer second.” This book was not published until 1996, seven years after Lucy’s death, because no one knew about it until an attorney noticed the manuscript in a box in the attic.

I think Lucy wrote this book because as her life progressed she realized how much she had learned and how influential her story could be to some people. She must have known that her advice and personal experiences could comfort and help, not just actresses, but anybody trying to reach an extreme goal. Lucille tells her words of wisdom through her own experiences and stories. She comments on what she should have done and the emotions she felt in certain situations. Most of her tips are directed towards struggling entertainers, but can be applied to everyone’s lives. One thing I admire about Lucille is that she had many opinions and was not too shy to express them. She goes through her past chronologically and goes very in depth, when talking about all events, big and small.
In Love, Lucy, the author is teaching a variety of life lessons under one major theme. Lucy teaches us to chase our dreams, but to know our morals and who we are before we start. I learned a lot about Lucille Ball and her family, who has always interested me because of the popular show “I Love Lucy.” I also learned that becoming an entertainer is not always as easy we all might think and that trial and error is the only way to reach a seemingly impossible goal. I think Lucille is trying to convince us that, yes, life is hard, sometimes small mistakes have large influences, and many times we will end up in failure, but giving up won’t take us anywhere better. An example of that would be Lucy’s relationship with Desi Arnaz. They lived two completely different lives and came close to divorce, but didn’t give up on each other and even stared in the television show “I Love Lucy” together. Although the marriage ended after a while they both gained so much, including two children.
Lucille is a very reliable source because the book is all about her and her own experiences. Her daughter, as it says in the “Foreword”, even sent out copies to family members, friends, and old acquaintances to read and confirm the legitimacy and accuracy of the book. I think Lucy, as anyone else would, tell some of her stories one sided. When she talks about her childhood she does not say how her grandparents felt about raising her which could have been interesting to know because they seemed to appreciate her siblings Cleo and Fred more. The one person Lucy always appreciated though was her mother, Dede. There was no other information that I think should have been included. Lucille gave great detail and supported most of the things she said.
