Plot overview.
King Henry VIII died and power is passed down to his son Edward VI. Edward was only in power for a while, eventually he diedd & now power is passed to his eldest daughter Mary, a Catholic. While Mary is in charge she believe the protestants (heretics) should be burned to death & that’s exactly what happens. Mary becomes sick and her half sister Elizabeth (protestant) is who is supposed to be given power next. The problem is that Mary WILL NOT allow a protestant to rule England. A rumor begins that a Protestant is becoming powerful and trying to overthrow the queen, Mary knows that Elizabeth is NOT behind it, but she still she puts Elizabeth in Jail under possible charges of being behind it. Of Course Elizabeth denies all charges, before Mary dies she asks Elizabeth to promise she will rule under catholic faith and Elizabeth says she will go with her conscience, basically denying Mary’s wishes. When Mary dies , Elizabeth obviously becomes Queen and was not prepared for it & doesn’t know how to make decisions & at the same time is being pressured to have an arrange marriage to produce a child . Elizabeth makes bad decisions and makes England weak and she becomes in danger for the throne. She begins an affair with Lord Robert Dudley , but to everyone he is not fit to be marrying the queen & some say he is already married .Elizabeth beings to be confused & doesn’t know who to trust. In the end she finds her one true lover, she sees who were really loyal to her & slowly begins to understand what is best for England.

Historical circumstances/rating:
In the sixteenth century, England was divided along lines of wealth and religion. The independence of the English church from Rome asserted by Henry VIII and retracted under Mary had been re-instituted under Elizabeth, who was excommunicated by Rome. Apparently almost half the population, however, including the older nobility remained Roman Catholic. This was in large part due to the resentment of the new mercantile class which was largely Protestant. As a ruler, Elizabeth was pragmatic, allowed Masses to be performed and even allowed the practice of Judaism, which was outlawed by the realm. For the first thirty years of her reign, the focus of the chronic plotting against her was centered on the Catholic Queen of Scots, Mary Stuart. The movie starts when Princess Elizabeth is thrown into the Tower of London, accused of plotting against her “sister” Queen Mary of England. This film is the telling of the early years of the reign of Elizabeth I of England and her difficult task of learning what is necessary to be a monarch. I would rate this movie a 3.5 – 4. It was good but the director should have given us background information. I feel as if I was confused at times because I did not understand why certain things were happening. But overall the movie had suspense, it showed true feeling, & might have answered questions that people had about Queen Elizabeth.
The Essay on Queen Elizabeth 1
Marriage is a complicated thing that is effected by many things. People let things stand in the way of marrying the person they love. Circumstances sometimes determine whether marriage is appropriate or even possible. The same is true with Queen Elizabeth. She did was she thought was best for herself and her country. Queen Elizabeth I was tempted by many things but refused to marry for the good of ...
Opinion on actors, direction, &music:
The actors that I think did the best were Cate Blanchett & Joseph Fiennes . They were the main characters & I think it is really hard to act as someone in the past. I think it is a lot of pressure for Cate clanchett because she is acting as queen, if she does one thing wrong she can’t forget she is representing the queen. Joseph had the role of Queen Elizabeth’s lover brings pressure too. Joesph did a great Job at showing emotion,Cate did a great job at being Queen Elizabeth that was a big role regardless. Together Cate & Joseph made this movie as Good as it was, if they weren’t good my rating for this movie would have been down. I don’t think any actor was bad because acting is a hard job as it is &doing a movie like this isn’t any easier. The direction of this movie was good , there’s nothing much the director could do besides follow what actually happened during Elizabeth’s reign. He didn’t change that much but it would have been better if he stayed EXACTLY to what actually happened. I understand actors usually make a little twist but when it comes to a story based on somebody I think it should be as accurate as possible. I think the music was perfect, the music lightened my mood, showed me the dancing of that time. The music in movies now usually gives you a little foreshadowing & I usually hated that. In this movie the music could be happy & jolly but something bad was about to happen, that is also another thing good about the direction. Overall I like the movie & I’m surprised because didn’t except to.
