Augustus is a friend of Isaac, one of the boys Hazel talks to at the meeting with cancer in his eyes. Augustus had osteosarcoma a year and a half ago, and as he describes, “I’m on a roller coaster that only goes up. ” So he is doing well. Hazel still has thyroid cancer, which effects her lungs. Hazel and Augustus become really good friends and share a love for a book titled An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten.
The story ends in a strange way, it ends in midsentence of the main character. The readers, including Hazel and Augustus, don’t get full closure on how the story ends. Peter Van Houten hasn’t published anything in ten years. Hazel has sent him many letters and he’s never responded. However, Augustus found Houten’s assistant and emailed her, who responded. Hazel, Augustus, and Isaac, all become really close. Hazel and Augustus like each other with out a doubt.
However, Hazel cannot be with Augustus because to be with him, is to hurt him. Hazel is still sick and who knows if she will get better or worse. She does not want to hurt Augustus in the way that they will be together and then she’ll just die so they continue their relationship as just friends. Peter Van Houten will not share the end of the story over the phone, fear of it being published and shared. Hazel is dying to meet him and to know the end of An Imperial Affliction.
Augustus, being the gentleman that he is, offers to take her as his wish from “The Genie Foundation” for sick kids. They make their trip to Amsterdam and meet Houten who isn’t who they thought he’d be. He’s a bitter man and they are disappointed but they still have a great trip, at least it was great until Augustus tells Hazel that his cancer had come back. Hazel had a fear of being with Augustus because she was uncertain of what the future had in store for her. However, Augustus was the one who was unsure.
