Book Review on Madame DeStael: The First modern woman The book Madame DeStael was written by Francine du Plessix Gray. The main purpose of the author is to present a story about an independent woman of letters who became successful and has outwitted Napoleon during the French Revolution. Gray was able to answer five descriptive questions in the book such as who, what, when, where, and how in relation to the life story of Madame DeStael.
Gray is also known to be realistic to Madame DeStael’s ceaseless energy which made the presentation of the story lively and guileless (Barnes and Noble, 2009, p. 1).
Besides, Gray follows her activities at a dynamic pace, masterfully imposing an extensive cast of characters while reshuffling the uptight storyline of her subject’s existence (Amazon. com, 2009, p. 1-2).
The audience could be perplexed by the way Gray presented the strength of Madame DeStael as she was exiled repeatedly by Napoleon.
The author also wrote the book in good grammar, style and diction. The book is easy to read and understand for a person that is so engrossed with the French Revolution and how women practically survived in it. An average-minded reader could also understand the reasons why Madame DeStael was involved with so many men in her life. In addition, Gray was able to spare Madame DeStael from the opposition of her male contemporaries without appearing to be boring and obvious.
