Summer Reading: The Hunt for Red October, by Tom Clancy One of the books I read over the summer, was The Hunt for Red October. The main characters of this book, are Jack Ryan, and Captain Ramius. Ryan, is a writer for the CIA, and Ramius is a Russian submarine commander, one of the most respected in all of Russia. Ryan’s conflict is that he has to find out all that he can about Russia’s new Ballistic Missile Typhoon Class submarine. What makes this different that any other submarine is that it has what is called a caterpillar drive system, (not a real propulsion system) this system makes this monster of a sub run completely silent using water jet propulsion. Ryan’s job is difficult because there are officials in Russia that don’t even know about the Caterpillar.
However Ramius has more of a conflict with himself. He is upset because his wife died, and wants almost a revenge. Ramius’ mission is to get the Red October as close the U. S. as possible and perform missile drills. One of the most significant events in this book, is when Jack Ryan, and crew, boards the Red October, after giving warning not to submerge.
However during this boarding another Russian sub, ordered to destroy them fires torpedoes on the boat. The Americans and Russians work together to not be destroyed along with the sub. The American sub, the USS Dallas, aids in the destruction of the Alpha class attack sub with its own torpedo. The Red October goes into silent mode, and runs away after this game of underwater real-life chess. The Red October is then hidden in a river in the United States.

There are various reasons for these standouts, sometimes incredible acting, sometimes impeccable story lines, but in many cases, it is the issues addressed by the movie. Most of the greatest ...
A possible theme for this book, could be that despite differences, it is possible for enemies, to work together to get a certain job done. Had the Russians and Americans not been able to work together they would have all died. This theme is developed using the two groups of people with major differences, and putting them in the same room. The theme is shown in other areas of life, such as, groups in school or the workplace. You may not like the person you are with, but you have to do it anyways because that’s life..
