In this book report I’ll show you the story about The SignalMan, this is a short story by Charles Dickens, it’s about spectral appearance precedes a tragic event on the railway on which the signalman works. The signalman works at a signal box in a deep near a tunnel on a stretch of the railway line, and he controls the movements of passing trains, the signalman feels really bad because after the ghost appears a terrible accident happens.
The story begins when the narrator said “Hallo, Bellow there!” but the signalman doesn’t look at him. The narrator shout again and said him if he can go down. The signalman answers and shows him the way. The signalman seems to have seen the narrator before but he tells him that is impossible, then, the signalman welcomes the narrator into his box and they begin to talk about the signalman’s work. The narrator leaves he promised to come back the next night. The following day the narrator returns, but this time he does not call as the signalman had asked him the night before due to that words disturbed him. The signalman tells him that he is going to reveal to him the reason of his problems, which is that he is haunted by a ghost. For this, the signalman is convinced, as it is about a sign that this apparition means a tragic event soon to happen. The following day the narrator visits the railway cutting and he is shocking when he sees a group of men investigating an accident on the line. Then the narrator realizes the signalman is dead after having been knocked down by a passing train. The driver says that he had tried to warn him. Unfortunately for the signalman, there had no much to do because as if just coincidence or something supernatural, the ghost had warned him several times before.
The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe deals with a mans mental deterioration and his descent into madness. The story focuses on the narrator and his obsessions. It is told from a first person point of view by the protagonist himself. The point of view of the story is important because the reader only has one side of the story to work with. Therefore, the reader only knows what the narrator thinks ...
The following day the narrator returns, but this time he does not call as the signalman had asked him the night before. The signalman tells him that he is going to tell him what is the reason of his problems, and he told to the narrator that he see a ghost. For that, the signalman thinks, all that it is about a sign that the ghost means a tragic event soon to happen, after the narrator listened that he left very concerted. The next day the narrator visits to signalman again, he is surprise when he sees a group of people look at an accident on the line, and then the narrator realizes the signalman is dead after been knocked by a train; the driver says he tried to warn him. That had to happen because the ghost warned him, and he doesn’t listened him.
The setting of the story is in England. It’s a single place on a lonely and isolated railway that it has “an earthy, deadly smell” and a gloomy atmosphere. There’s a dark tunnel, with a line at the outside, there is a signal box. I think that the characters, the signalman and the narrator had a good relationship, obviously with the tension of the story. At the beginning was uncomfortable but when the advancing story they became a kind of friends, and if the signalman had not die they have been really good friend’s maybe.
In general I liked the story, because I like the stories about paranormal success, and this was really interesting especially the end. I would like recommend this book to all people who like the paranormal success.
