The social web is a set of social relations that link people through the World Wide Web. It enables people to connect with old friends, family, and classmate. Social networking is an online service, platform, or site that focuses on facilitating the building of social networks or social relations among people who, for example, share interests, activities, backgrounds, or real-life connections. I am going to take a look at a few of the many different social sites that I have used and when they began. A social network service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services are web-based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging. Early social networking websites started in the form of generalized online communities such as The WELL (1985), Theglobe.com (1994), Geocities (1994) and Tripod.com (1995).
These early communities focused on bringing people together to interact with each other through chat rooms, and share personal information and ideas around any topics via personal homepage publishing tools which was a precursor to the blogging phenomenon. Some communities took a different approach by simply having people link to each other via email addresses. These sites included Classmates.com (1995), focusing on ties with former school mates, and SixDegrees.com (1997), focusing on indirect ties. User profiles could be created, messages sent to users held on a “friends list” and other members could be sought out who had similar interests to yours in their profiles (Boyd & Ellison 2007, p. 3).

These online social interactions form the basis of much online activity including online shopping, education, gaming and social networking websites. The social aspect of Web 2.0 (The term Web 2.0 was coined in 1999 to describe web sites that use technology beyond the static pages of earlier web sites) communication has been to facilitate interaction between people with similar tastes. As people’s activities on the Web and communication increase, information about their social relationships become more available. The social web has also being used by people to gain support for legal issues, like the controversy over hanging of Balwant Singh Rojoana. Be it social sites like Facebook, Twitter or Flickr, blogs and websites- the world is full of Balwant. These contain news related to Balwant and appeals for clemency- both in India and abroad. A number of short documentaries on Balwant, projecting him as a martyr and “son of Punjab” have been uploaded on YouTube.
Flickr also has hundreds of pictures of Balwant under the category of Khalistan Commando Force as well as stories carrying appeals against his hanging (Bhatia, 2012).
Social networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook, as well as the future Data web enable people and organizations to contact each other with persistent human-friendly names. Today hundreds of millions of Internet users are using thousands of social websites to stay connected with their friends, discover new ‘‘friends, ’and to share user-created content, such as photos, videos, social bookmarks, blogs, and even through mobile platform support for cell phones. By the end quarter in 2008, Facebook reported 67 million members, Myspace occupied 100 million users, and YouTube had more than 100 million videos and 2.9 million user channels, and these numbers are consistently growing. The social Web is quickly reinventing itself, moving beyond simple web applications that connect individuals to become an entirely new way of life. I bought it in May of 2000, and my main reason for buying one was to play games on the computer. But as I began to explore the internet I discovered classmates.com, reunion.com (which is now mylife.com), and Myspace. One day I heard my niece talking about Facebook and I decided to check it out and have been hooked ever since. I check my Facebook page before I go to bed at night and each morning when I wake up, yes I am obsessed. I also visited a few other websites including Amazon, EBay, Flixster, Foursquare, LinkedIn, Tagged, and Twitter. In 2007 we saw a proliferation of new online hangouts, with Imbee.com courting pre-Myspace tweens and Eons.com offering baby boomers a place to hang out and set up obituary alerts. Even the original teen-centric websites were getting a little grayer: 41 percent of the people over age 18 who visited MySpace.com during a four week period were 35 or older, according to internet tracking firm Hitwise USA Inc. three years ago 62 percent of facebook.com visitors were age 18 to 24.
The top 20 social networking websites accounted for 6 percent of all webs visited (Johnson, 2007).

Myspace was launched in August 2003 and is headquartered in Beverly Hills, California. In June 2012, Myspace had 25 million unique U.S. visitors. Myspace was founded in 2003 and was acquired by News Corporation in July 2005 for $580 million. From 2005 until early 2008, Myspace was the most visited social networking site in the world, and in June 2006 surpassed Google as the most visited website in the United States. In April 2008, Myspace was overtaken by Facebook in the number of unique worldwide visitors, and was surpassed in the number of unique U.S. visitors in May 2009, though Myspace generated $800 million during the 2008 fiscal year.

LinkedIn is a social networking website for people in professional occupations. Founded in December 2002 and launched on May 5, 2003, it is mainly used for professional networking. As of January 2013[update], LinkedIn reports more than 200 million acquired users in more than 200 countries and territories. In June 2011, LinkedIn had 33.9 million unique visitors, up 63 percent from a year earlier and surpassing Myspace. LinkedIn filed for an initial public offering in January 2011 and traded its first shares on May 19, 2011, under the NYSE symbol “LNKD”. One of the greatest online selling success stories is a Web site called Amazon.com. Founded by entrepreneur Jeff Bezos in 1994, it began as a way to buy books and music online, but soon expanded to include just about any product imaginable. With Amazon’s online store, customers can “window shop” for more products than they could find even at the largest shopping malls.

It enables anyone with an email address to send money safely and securely to anyone else in the world who has an email address. These transactions might be as simple as paying a neighbor’s kid to rake your leaves, or it might be something more substantial, such as collecting payment from the buyer when you sell your car. PayPal can just as easily be used for transferring money for services or goods. To use this service, simply open a PayPal account and then transfer money into it through a bank wire or a credit card transaction. Now you are ready to give the money to anyone with a PayPal account. Essentially this payment method allows anyone with an email address to accept credit card payments (Friedman, 2007, p. 86).

PayPal is also important because it enabled the rise of another e-commerce giant known as eBay. EBay had its beginnings in Pierre Omidyar’s spare bedroom in a Silicon Valley townhouse. It was 1994 when he opened a site called Auction Web, and few people cared much about it.
The idea was to auction goods online, just as one might with a real auctioneer and an audience bidding and one-upping each other on price. It seemed like a strange idea, but Omidyar first tried it by putting his broken laser pointer online with an opening bid of $1. Over the next two weeks, he watched people actually fighting over the pointer, until the auction closed and the winning bidder paid $14.83. When he reminded the purchaser that the pointer was broken, the bidder on the item said that was okay because he was a collector of laser pointers. This was the day that Omidyar knew his idea would change the world (Cohen, 2003, p. 4).
Four years later, eBay itself had a value higher than Sears, Kmart, and J.C. Penney combined. Omidyar’s own net worth was 4 billion dollars. In 2002, eBay saw how important PayPal was to its success and acquired the company. Today, PayPal has 78 million active accounts and can make transactions in 24 currencies in 190 markets around the world. So as you can see social media is very popular and Facebook has more registered users than any of the other websites.
So we all know that the internet can be a scary thing, and most unknown things usually are until you figure them out. So take the time to explore the World Wide Web, who knows you may even surprise yourself and learn some interesting fact, or meet some new people, or connect with old friends or even take a college course. The possibilities on the internet are endless so let’s start learning and exploring. And as with everything you do be safe as you explore.
