The story of roots starts in Africa during the 1700’s. Kunta Kinte, an African youth, is going through his manhood training to be a man. I don’t know how well that will work in our time. He is taught many lessons, Fights a wrestler, and performs other religious rituals. One task was for him to go out and catch a bird without killing it. Something I wouldn’t be able to do. During his search he sees white people and runs back to camp. He tells the tribe leader and everyone is warned about the white people who put you on a boat to a far away land. When his Manhood training is over he returns to his village.
He gets his own hut and doesn’t have to live with his parents anymore. That would be cool to have nowadays. So anyway he decides to go out into the woods to fetch some wood to make a drum for his little brother. While he is searching for the wood he is captured by Americans who traveled all the way from Annapolis, Maryland in America. I wouldn’t have gone through all that trouble for my little brother. They captured some more Africans and put them on a boat to America. Once in America, At a slave auction, Kunta is bought for $850 by John Reynolds of Spotsylvania County, Virginia.
Given the name “Toby” and assigned to work as a field laborer on Massa Waller’s plantation, Kunta proceeds to escape four times over the next four years and is punished, each time more severely. See Kunta Kinte is too brave for his own good I wouldn’t try to escape four times. maybe once is OK. Unlike the American-born Blacks on the plantation, who have not been taught to read or write and are treated more like children than adults, Kunta can read, write, and speak fluent Arabic, and is angered by his forced enslavement. I’d be angry too.

On his fourth escape attempt, slave catchers chop off half of Kunta’s right foot so that he cannot escape anymore. Good for him he had it coming. Incensed by the attack, John Reynolds’ brother, Dr. William Reynolds, buys Kunta from his brother and allows him to be nursed back to health by his “big house” cook, Bell. A warmhearted, American-born slave, Bell patiently nurtures a relationship with the tall, brooding African at the same time. Kunta works for seven years as Dr. Reynolds’ gardener before he finally plucks up the courage to ask Bell to marry him.
Took him long enough. She does, and the two have a baby at a rather advanced age. Kunta insists that the child be named Kizzy, an African name, rather than Mary, the name Bell would have preferred. Kizzy which in African means “Stay Put” meaning that neither Kunta nor Kizzy Would ever leave bell. At the age of six, Kizzy becomes good friends with Dr. Reynolds’ daughter, Missy — to her parents’ dismay. This is weird how Missy and Kizzy could get along. As time goes on, Kizzy grows less close to her parents and more attached to Missy, who treats her as her personal plaything.
Through Missy, Kizzy also learns how to read. This proves to be her undoing, for ten years later, Kizzy falls in love with a male slave from the plantation. When she confides to him that she knows how to read and write, he implores her to forge papers for him so he can escape, and she does. The following day, soldiers who have caught, tortured and killed the runaway slave come to Dr. Reynolds’ plantation and wrench Kizzy away from her parents. She is dragged away to a slave auction, never to see her parents again.
Kizzy is auctioned off to a disreputable slave owner in North Carolina named Tom Moore. That is just wrong I would not want to be taken away from everything I know to be auctioned off. On Kizzy’s first night at his plantation, her drunken master makes crude sexual advances to her. When she refuses to have sex with him, he brutally rapes her in the barn and then drops a quarter in a jar next to her bed as thanks for her services. He continues to abuse her several times a week, leaving her a coin each time, until she is five months pregnant.

Evan and Jimmy begin to poke fun at George by saying that a new law says that a free black person can not stay in the state for more than 60 days or he would become “Plain Nigger Again”. They leave laughing. I wonder why Sam Harvey never mentioned that. At night George and Tildy are sleeping Tildy tells George how much Tom admires his dad. Meanwhile on the White side, a Civil War has broke out between the North and South. About time. The next day George announces that he is leaving again to go up north where Black people were treated right. He promised Tildy that he would be back after the war was over.
We are then introduced to two new people. George and his wife Martha. One day tom was walking and heard something in a cabin, he checked and saw a white man stealing food. the Man ran away and Tom began cleaning the mess when the overseer came in and taught he was stealing. He was beaten by the overseer. He returned home and was being patched up when some one knocked on the door. It was the man who was stealing. He saw tom an started to run away but Tom made him come back. the man said he was poor and came to the south in search of wealth. WOW a poor white man, pretty surprising.
He and his wife were then invited in and were fed. His name was George and her name was Martha. Since there was already a George they gave the man the name of Ol’ George. Ol’ George was soon made overseer of the slaves. The only problem was that he didn’t know how to oversee. Lewis and Virgil end up teaching him that he has to keep the slaves in line and if needed whip them. Kindhearted Ol’ George said that he couldn’t whip any of them because they were friends. The Second friendly White/Black interaction. Later on tom is walking around and encounters Jimmy Brent hiding from the war.

That chicken. He tells Tom to fetch him some clothing so that he could get out of his uniform and not get killed. Tom ended up fighting Jimmy and in the end while Tom was Drowning jimmy he said this “Listen to me, Jimmy Brent! Listen to me! And take this message with you to Hell! The last hands to touch you in this Earth… was my BLACK hands! ” Then Jimmy Brent Died. How did I know that jimmy was going to die. Soon Enough the war was over. That meant that the slaves were free.
That sure took long enough for them to get free. Blacks all over the south rejoiced. The Whites felt defeated. Sam Harvey announced that he might have to sell the farm but if people wanted they could stay and work on a share of the farm. One Night a group called the night riders came to the farm. They came in guns blazing and started burning stuff the destroyed a lot of the crops and their goal was to make the black people scared. Almost like terrorist attacks of nowadays. Tom who was a blacksmith found a way to Identify what horses were there that night.
there were markings on the horseshoes that identified each horse. Tom took this info and went to the sheriff. The sheriff told Evan Brent that Tom proved who were the night riders and that the evidence had to be turned in unless Tom Harvey changed his mind about the Evidence. Dirty Cop that’s all I have to say. Sam Harvey meets with senator Justin to sell his Farm. Sam gets $5000 for it and the Black sharecroppers had their debts removed. Sam Harvey Returned to the farm to say bye to all the black people and to introduce the senator as the new owner.

I always liked Ol’ George, he has a kind heart. The next day Irene tells the sheriff that she wants to Rip up the evidence against Evan Brent. Then senator Justin Declares that the black sharecroppers have been given an advance on their supplies and can not leave until their debt is paid. I guess the whites found a legal way to keep blacks working for them. Chicken George comes back to join his family. He announces that he has purchased land in Tennessee. Tom tells him the situation and they all prepare a set up. I like set ups especially when they work.
One day Martha goes to Evan Brent and says that Ol’ George is hurt and that the blacks might hurt him. So Evan comes down to the farm. Once down there he is confronted by Tom with a gun, but quicker than they caught Evan two white men came out and pointed guns at Tom. I’d hate to be Tom right now. They went to the barn where an ambush took place and Evan Brent was tied to the same tree that Tom was tied to when he got whipped. Evan Should have been killed so that he could join his brother in hell. Then Tom left him tied up and they all got into Big horse carriages and were off to their New home in Tenesseee.
