Each entering freshman here at William Paterson University is aware of the high emotion and tension in the air this early in the semester. We are each nervous yet determined, nave yet skeptical. And every freshman will react differently to this heavy change. Some will sink and some will swim. Some of us will make the decision to grab a hold of our lives, while others will simply see this as four more years of high school. Although much still seems recreational, it is time for us to buckle down and achieve our goals.
Carpe diemseize the moment. With all the new experiences and studies, there is a great deal for college students to handle. We all must learn better studying habits, make wiser choices, and set our priorities straight. And in consulting with other students, Ive discovered a majority of us are finding college courses much more overwhelming than high school classes. This, I feel, is the most dramatic change. We are used to teachers persistently advising us to do our work. Now we are solely responsible for these tasks.
And with other grave responsibilities like adapting to complete independence, making mew friends, and balancing a productive schedule, more difficult schoolwork tips the iceberg. But we each can handle it if approached correctly. There is enough time to finish the work assigned to us and settle in socially. It is not impossible to balance all of our new responsibilities, but it will take an extraordinary effort. All of the new students here at William Paterson are here to make a difference. We are each striving to succeed by making a conscious decision to give college the greatest effort we have. We have the resources to educate ourselves in many aspects at our very fingertipsit is our choice to utilize them.
