Ryan Short – University Lecturer
{draw:frame} Ryan Short is a lecturer at a major university based primarily in Brisbane, Australia. He is in his mid 30s and has been a lecturer for nearly 7 years. Before becoming a lecturer, he was a high school teacher for 5 years. He is recently divorced and lives alone in a rental house close to the city centre. He likes to play tennis at the weekends to relax, and also enjoys painting.

His usual daily routine includes making time to talk to his students about any of their issues with course material, and finding new and interesting ways to help his students engage with course
topics. He finds lecturing interesting, as well as using technology to help him teach more effectively. He uses slideshows and video clips in his lectures to help him get his points across in a more interesting way and to help to be more engaging for his students. He also enjoys using social networking websites to help him stay connected with friends without having to take time out of his busy schedule. He likes to find time to visit his mother and maintain a good relationship with his family.

What he finds most tedious about his everyday life is the amount of marking he has to do with his students’ assignments and keeping up to date with paperwork, since he much prefers to be teaching his students. What he finds most frustrating in his life is traffic jams, so he cycles to work instead of driving. He interacts with other lecturers and his students mostly, but tries to keep an active social life at weekends. He uses technology often, whether it be creating visual aids for his lectures, or by logging onto his facebook profile. He likes to download music often, to put onto his mp3 player to listen to whilst cycling or painting.
His main aims in life are to become a father, to endeavour to be a better lecturer, and to own one of every game console, and to find the time to use them.
Tess Gilfedder – High school student
{draw:frame} Tess Gilfedder is a 17 year old high school student who lives with her parents near Toowong in Brisbane, Australia. She was born in England an emigrated with her parents when she was 16 years old. Her hobbies include creative writing and spending time with friends. She is in year 12, and is doing well with her studies. She is studying ICT, and is doing very well.
Her usual daily routine includes going to school and writing short stories on her laptop. She also enjoys walking her dog in the afternoons to help her stay fit and to relax. She likes to play games on her laptop, particularly games from The Sims series. She listens to lots of music, her favourite band is indie rock band Cute is What We Aim For. She enjoys schoolwork, and likes to be organised and get assignments handed in on time. She has an iPhone, and she loves the amount of freedom and convenience it brings. She loves to own gadgets and is very technology savvy. She is highly competent with word processing and making presentations for school, as well as using word processing to write her short stories on her laptop. She really loves it when her teachers use computers to help them teach, as it she finds it a lot more interesting than just copying large blocks of text from a whiteboard.

Tanya Goodair – University Student
from her course. She likes the independence of living away from her parents, but sometimes she misses them, as they live in Cairns, which is very far away.
What she dislikes about the use of technology, is when it is over-used. She believes that technical aids can be a good thing, but when they are used too much, it takes away from any positive benefits. She finds travelling to university very tedious, as it takes up to 50 minutes each way to get to her university. She loves social networking, and has lots of friends on her facebook account who often contact her to invite her to events. Without this account, she feels that she’d be cut off from her friends, so she maintains her account with care.
Her aims are to graduate from her course with flying colours, and get out into the world of teaching as soon as she can. She would also like to learn to play an instrument of some sort, to help her expand her creative horizons.
