Society roles on the edge of redefinition Since the beginning of time it has been known that there have been a distinction between woman and man for biological reasons which is used as a justification for the creation of what is called: society roles; Roles that are meant to shape not only the behaviour but also the attitudes of the people towards life. From the beginning man in almost all cultures have had the fortune of having a more prestigious role than woman and the role of the leader while the woman is expected to live in the shadow and work in their houses.
However, today the world is facing the globalization, and issue that is changing the world as it used to be known and where many woman believe that this is the time to stand for themselves and demand for the same rights both sexes. So, should the society roles be redefined or be the same as it has been for centuries? Society is not only content with the biological distinction between sexes, it insist in the factor of adding a cultural difference further of the reality of the differences between sexes and confirming the theory that there is a need of having social roles.
It is known that man has a bigger potential when it comes to strength and historically that was the reason why men were the leaders, they were the ones in charge because they were able to provide resources for their families and since that moment men have been recognise as the main provider while woman were supposed to take care of the housekeeping. That is the reason why nowadays many men believe they are above woman or that they should be the ones in control and management of the important roles in the society. The basic biological facts are undisputed: Only women can bear and nurse children, and, on the average, men are bigger, stronger, and faster than women. Adult male bodies also contain a higher amount of androgen than adult female bodies. However, people are never content with observing these simple facts; they always jump to conclusions about their psychological meaning. ” (Erwin J. Haeberle)
The Essay on A Womans Role In Society Is Primarily That Of A Wife And Mother Do You Agree
A womans role is primarily that of a wife and a mother do you agree? The big debate about a womans role, and place in the society has been going on for a long time, and is still continuing. Women have been fighting to be able to stand on the same podium as men for over decades of years. However, I do agree with the given statement that the primary role of women in the society is to be a wife and a ...
As a result, society has now an ambiguous image of what a social role should be, especially because the physical sex, gender role and sexual orientation of a person are not always in perfect agreement: An individual can be a female and masculine or a male and feminine. Once this is understood a new tern is added: Gender identity, what basically refers to the way an individual feels according to their gender role. Most of the time people’s gender role and identify coincide.
Thus it is relevant to mention that some individuals not only play their gender role, but they truly make it their own. They not only develop and display the qualities of their role, but they consider them to be a real expression of who they are and their “real selves”. Nevertheless in many other cases the society role has a crippling and confining feeling effect on those who tries to broaden the definition of the society role, not because they do not accept it, but because they feel identify with their role but they want it to be expanded.
Clearly, the difference between “sex” and “gender” is that sex is a biological tern meanwhile gender is a psychological and cultural one. Sex is the basis on which gender is built. As an example it can be mention when babies are born, their sex is determinate by the look of their external organs and from that moment the gender start to develop; It begins from the assignment of a male or female name, follow by a blue or pink blanket which are supposed to be representative of each gender.

From that moment each sex receive a different parental approach, punishments, caresses, clothes, etc. in order to make a distinction between a boy and a girl, a man and a woman. Still, they are not only learning to accept their gender but to assume a “proper” masculine or feminine behaviour. Behaviours developed way before a human could exercise any rational choice or control of their gender. “There is considerable pressure to conform to social roles. Social roles provide an example of social influence in general and conformity in particular.
Most of us, most of the time, conform to the guidelines provided by the roles we perform. We conform to the expectations of others, we respond to their approval when we play are roles well, and to their disapproval when we play our roles badly. ” (McLeod, S. A. ) This general perception of what is considered the “natural behaviour” of what an individual should be and act since the moment of birth has a huge impact of a boy and girl development because they are given different cares which creates a double standard in society.
For example, girls are traditionally restricted of their sexual opportunities because they are “supposed” to be “pure and innocent” meantime boys are encourage to explore their “sexual nature”. As that example there are many and the problem with it is that it creates a false idea that women have to be submissive and men have to be aggressive. Double standards in society not only involve sexual morality but points to a more fundamental issue. An issue that recently has been define as sexism: an attitude or philosophy where a person’s sex is used to all kind of social discrimination.
The reason is because many men develop a non-healthy attitude, believe, fanatical and anxious pride of their masculinity, which restrict nearly all their actions causing a distorting character in themselves and also women who live in an unrealistic ideal of pure womanhood that takes from them the initiative and expose them to injustice. For instance, men and women who do no feel masculine or feminine enough according to the stereotypes may feel affected by them and then may develop ambiguous feelings about their biological sex.

They may also start to feel a need for a different body of the opposite sex and finally play a role more of their liking in terms of social acceptance. Another example could be the man who have been told that women are sexually passive, the moment this men realize the woman can be even more aggressive than him, he may begin to doubt about his own masculinity and become sexual dysfunctional. In addition if a man is gentle, handsome and passive will probably be ridiculed and denounce as a “pervert” or “queer”, reason why “real women” may regard him as less than a “real man” and finally reject him as a partner.
Because of this, today we are facing a gender role crisis especially when it comes to man. According to the recognized psychologist Judith Worell “…The masculinity crisis has resulted in a wholesale trashing of all aspects of masculinity, such that for many men the essential dilemma is that such of what they have been taught to value since childhood is under attack. To help men to come to terms with the crisis and restore their lost sense of pride, society must also honour the still-valuable aspects of masculinity in order to restore the lost sense of pride associated with being a man. (Judith Worell) However, the topic gets more complex and confusing according it goes further due to the fact that there is a wrong conclusion based on a false assumption that women are naturally passive and man active. This assumption affects no only the behaviour of heterosexuals but also homosexuals. In heterosexual couples each person feels they must assume one role, most of the time the roles are based on the assumption but in others is backward, what causes a problems in the relation because of the social and personal pressure of not fulfilling the role they are meant to do.
On the other side there are the homosexuals couples that seems to accept the assumption too by always choosing one to play the “male” role while the other one play the “female” role. Nowadays society is in a time of transition, change and evolution has open the door of opportunities for more women to be equal but they haven’t achieve social equality and that is why many women and even men are fighting for the rights of both sexes in a future.
Not only because women deserve the same rights but because men need to be free of themselves in order to allow themselves to express and show feelings that are rarely found in a man like shame, fear and vulnerability and live in a future not where human differences will disappear but in a world where the social conditions are fair and equal for everyone and where “different” won’t be related to inferior or superior.

As a final result of what was mentioned previously, it is obvious that even when society has had many improvements and changes, it hasn’t been able to redefine these society roles resulting in a unbalanced culture that does not appreciate the real value of the individuals based on their talents and abilities but in a prefund focus on the gender when the truth is that as complex humans, their capacities and desires tend to go beyond the limitations of the tradition of the gender roles.
Finally it can be interfered that cultures and social roles are changing, that are facing a big challenge since the early century and there are not many options when it comes to decide what to do in order to solve this situation. One solution is not to change the way humans have been handling the roles where men are more important and powerful than woman or in the other hand the other option that is to redefine the roots of the nature of the roles by giving the people roles based in their talents by the appreciation of their capacities instead of the sexes.
The ideal solution for the problem will be the one which people are appreciate by their capacities even when it is known that it will take a while for people to find a balance between genders so people will accomplish the goal of living in a better and more fair world for all.
