A moment of shock (Alexandre Siqueira)
The day is perfect. The sun is warm and the wind touches my face with its soft breeze. I see my bicycle sitting in the garage and I call out to my cousin as it reminds me of a day similar to this…

We went for a picnic at an aquatic centre with the church group. My cousins and I were the only ones with no parents. No parents meant no rules, no boundaries and no telling off. We rode our bikes on that particular day. We had with us my cousin’s semi-new bicycle. It was a silver shining mountain bike. We called it ‘monster’ because it was aggressive and fast. And we also had my aunt’s old pink dilapidated bicycle which was on its last days. The day went on and it felt like it couldn’t get any better, but unfortunately at the end of the day the fun was over and it was time to head home. On our way home we decided to walk and push the bikes as we were too tired to ride up the hill. As we were walking, two middle aged men approached us and asked for directions. My cousin Victor, the youngest, almost immediately started explaining, even though he had no clue whatsoever of where those men were heading. It was funny at first. His brother Washington and I were laughing, wondering if they were going to stop listening to him blather. We interrupted and told them the right direction. They slowed down their pace and we over took them and continued up the hill.
We soon forgot about those men. It was a good day! The wind blew through my hair, the sun shone down at us as we socialized, feeling no rush to get home. We talked, laughed and remembered the blunders that each of us made.
The Essay on Cousin Simmons Adam British Home
April Morning by Andrew Machtolff April Morning was an interesting book concerning a young man, Adam Cooper, and the trials and tribulations of his taking part in the Battle of Lexington. The story takes place mostly in Adam s home town of Lexington, Massachusetts, but also partially on the surrounding roads and countryside. The novel opens with a glimpse into the daily life of the Cooper family. ...
It was sudden. I realized that I was being grabbed by the arm. I looked up and it was one of the men and this time they weren’t friendly. They wanted something. We stopped. They told us to give them the bikes. It was unreal! Was I being robbed? I’ve never been robbed before. I didn’t know what to do and even though their orders were given, I froze! My heart started beating so fast I couldn’t hear myself think. I could not think. I looked at Victor, he had stepped back. Good move. On the other hand his brother was holding Monster with both hands. He couldn’t let go. I started to laugh inside but quickly realised it was not funny at all. Washington froze too. What’s happening? I thought if he did not hand over the bicycle the man would harm him, so I whispered angrily. “Give him the bike!” I didn’t think he heard me. But then the robber yelled at him and he quickly woke up. I think he was in shock just like me. He finally let go of the bicycle and the robbers were on their way. The one riding my aunt’s bike almost lost control and fell over because the bike was so old and could not take much weight. How bizarre!
The realization that we had just been robbed didn’t arrive straight away. We stood still trying to process what had just happened. I looked at Washington and gave him an uncertain smile and spoke. “Did we just get robbed?” He said “I think so”. We walked home with our hands empty and a lot of explaining to do. Later I didn’t know what to feel. Should I have felt bad for Victor or afraid of what auntie was going say? Or maybe lucky it’s that we came out of this alive? Besides this confusion, all I could think of was how funny it was that that man had just stolen a bicycle which was not worth a cent. We got home and at first auntie thought we were joking about the robbery, but we weren’t.
Looking back at the robbery, my cousins and I still find it funny how the whole situation went. Sure, we were scared but at least we came out alive. The irony was that my auntie was trying to get rid of that bicycle anyway. I am just glad we experienced it together because looking back we can talk and laugh about what happened and it doesn’t seem so frightening.
