THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER
The novel The Fall of the House of Usher speaks about the sister and brother of Ushers, who are the last owners of the House. They are suffering with strange illness. Roderich invites his boyhood friend to ask for comfort. Through Roderick’s friends’ eyes we are the witnesses of the collapse crumbling of the house how it finally disappears into the tarn in the moonlight.
The story begins with the description of the weather „….dark, dull, and soundless day in the autumn of the year…“ From the very beginning Poe refers to a sense of death decay ( White steam of decay trees crumbling walls, clouds hanging oppressive. There is unity of details and unity of tunes throughout the story from the beginning where the author describes the dank tarn and the dark rooms of the house to the end of the of the story. The unity seems to be between the sister and the brother. I think Roderich loves his sister and is concerned about sister’s illness, knowing that his sister is the last relative to Roderich. From the very beginning we can guess that the story ends with death because the dramatic details must refer to fear or terror. That fear gradually destroys Roderick ’s mind which ends with a storm and Madeleine’s returning from the tomb.
Roderich and Madeleine are twins. They are both suffering from strange illness. Roderick may suffer even more, because it is so painful for him to see his sister suffering from mysterious illness. Madeleine illness can be seen in her appearance, she seems to be physically very weak ( The narrator sees Madeleine walking in the distance Although he cannot see her face he notices her calmness. I suppose Roderick loves Madeleine and not to see her death he puts her ling in the coffin.

Roderich has connection with the house as he said the stones of the house have consciousness.
Smell – he cannot eat tasteless food, he could wear only certain clothes, the odour of all flower were oppressive, faint light in his eyes, the aware of peculiar sounds of the guitar, which didn’t not inspire him with horror.
Roderick appearance – large eyes, thin lips and very pallid, a nose of Hebrew model, a finely moulded chin – the narrator refers to the features of his appearance adding that a countenance not easily to be forgotten.
We know that the narrator tries to comfort and rescue Roderick from an illness. He spend hour sitting just to be to be a campaign to Roderick: and watch he is creating the painting or creating some surreal songs. To is even ready to read him the books to console loneliness. Roderich’s fantasy appears in music he plays, in the paintings, and the storieshe hears– but these activities deepen his imagination. We know, that Roderick has not been outside for a long time. He cannot not understand the surroundings because he is isolated from real life. It all can be seen in the room: trophies on the walls, dull tapestry, dark and narrow hall, creaking steps; also, decays trees outside the mansion.. His fantasy is developing and the climax of his imagination appears when he feels that Madeleine is coming from the cellar for revenge. When fantasy is stronger that reality. we can lose control over ourselves and madness is the winner. As for Roderich case fantasy becomes reality when it evoke madness of Roderick.
The narrator can observe the situation inside the mansion and everything is real. But he gradually takes the atmosphere hidden in the rooms. He begins to suspect things.
Roderick seems to be mentally ill but Madeleine physically
Poe creates suspects:
The Essay on Fall Of Usher Narrator Roderick House
'The Fall of the House of Usher's ummary The narrator approaches the House of Usher on a 'dull, dark, and soundless day.' This house -- the estate of his boyhood friend, Roderick Usher -- is very gloomy and mysterious. The narrator writes that the house seems to have collected an evil and diseased atmosphere from the decaying trees and murky ponds around it. He notes, however, that although the ...
The narrator begins to suspect in Roderick behaviour, he can see some strange features appeared while creating paintings, while singing the song “The Haunted palace. In the song he refers to the conditions of the sentience: condensation of an atmosphere waters, grey wall, decayed trees. When Roderick is singing about rocks that has a sense of smell, covered with fungi the narrator jumps a bit. The other pretty good evidence appears when the narrator has discovered that Melanie’s face seems to be rather blush with a suspicious smile. Some days after Melanie body is lying in the coffin , Roderick’s ordinary manners vanish. There was the time the narrator mentions his anxious mind with some oppressive secret and at times the narrator is obliged to resolve all into the mere inexplicable vagaries of madness. week after Madeleine death the furniture seems to be moving, he can hear voices that coming from the vaults where Madeleine lies.
It is no wonder that the conditions and events in the house change the narrator common sense. His room , above the basement where Melanie’s coffin is, the things in the room such as gloomy furniture and tattered draperies, darkness of the chamber, certain and indefinite sound from the basement, the cracking on the shed – this all affects horrifyingly and causes struggling nervousness. At the critical moment when Roderick admits that he put Madeline alive into the coffin , he calls the Narrator “Madman”. So the narrator is between reality and fantasy and the only way to escape from fantasy is to run away from th house. He can see the collapse crumbling of the house an how it finally disappears into the tarn symbolising as devil in the moonlight. Very picturesque!!!!!!!
The weather – is the symbol of death.
The weather seems to be symbolic of the death. Everything is in the dull colours: Dull dark and soundless day in the autumn of the year. The clouds hung oppressively. At the enda of the story Roderick opens the window: the impetuous fury of the entering gust nearly lifted them from their feet. It was really tempestuous yet sternly beautiful night. A whirlwind had apparently collected its force , there were frequent and violent alternations in the direction of the wind, and exceeding density of the clouds.
The Essay on House Narrator Usher Story
In 'The Fall of the House of Usher', Poe uses the life-like characteristics of the decaying house of Usher as a device for giving the house a supernatural atmosphere. This not only makes the story act upon the reader in a grabbing way, but it also creates an impression of fear, mystery and horror, typical for Poe's literary works. For example, from the very beginning of the story, the reader can ...
The house of Ulsher – the symbol of the vanish person
During the whole of a dull, dark , and soundless day in the autumn of the year ,when clouds hung oppressively, the narrator discovers himself within view of melancholy House of Usher The description of the house could be the image of a face with vacant eye-windows and hair of fungus on the roof. The author adds very simple natural objects which has a power of affection: the grey walls decaying trees, silent deep dull tarn . The sight of the old house decaying of Usher was horrifying itself yet the narrator has to enter and he becomes witness of the terrible tragedies which are happening in its house. The beginning gives the atmosphere and it foreshadows the event to come and the is obviously unpredictable.
The athmosphere
The genre of the novel is expected to be a horror story. If we read horror stories the author should include the real situations as well, so that the reader can believe the whole plot of the story. The more reality included in the story the quicker the plot of the story starts developing; the more clearly we understand the plot; as a result, we can easily get to learn activities and scenes happening in the book. That’s my opinion Edgar Allan Poe uses different means to set horrifying scenes: But fear is not a genre, it might be a part of our emotion. Nothing is important but the atmosphere that creates a sense horror. Edgal Allan Poe is a master to set up and create great details of the atmosphere at the beginning of the story when the narrator is observing the surrounding of the house. The gloomy appearance of the house gives it a suspected atmosphere.
