My center observation was done at The Early Learning Center. I saw a mixture of inappropriate and appropriate practices. The inappropriate practices that I saw were during the teacher to child ratio. There were probably twenty to thirty children and there was only one helper in the room handing out food and trying to watch them, the wrest was in the break room having lunch. Also I could tell that the classroom was more teacher directed then child directed. The appropriate practices I saw was all the learning centers that they had and how they had totes to change out material. They had a lot of print all through out the room. They had more than enough time at each center.
The Head Start observation was done at the Benjamin Franklin School. I saw more inappropriate practices done here. There was more times than I can count on my hands and toes that one of the teacher was texting on her phone. She was not paying attention to the children at all. All of the learning center materials was old and outdated you could tell that the children were bored with it all. The teacher cut out the art project herself, she even glued the projected for them instead of letting them do the project. I was highly disappointed in this project.

My Pre-k observation was done at the Grade School. Here I saw more inappropriate practices. They made the kids all sit down and write there names until they got it right and then after they got it done they was aloud to join in learning centers. They was expecting all the kids to be at the same level to write their own name but clearly the wasn’t the case because their was three, four, and five year olds in the pre-k. The materials were a bit out dated. I was a little disappointed in the pre-k at Bluford.
The K-3 classroom observation was done at Wayne City Grade School in the third grade classroom. I had her in the sixth and seventh grade. My sixth grade year was her first year teaching at Wayne City. I can see that she has improved as a teacher and that she is better in the younger grades then in the older grades. I did however see a lot of inappropriate practices but I think that is because of that is how the teacher is told how she is suppose to do things in the classroom. They do have a reading center that they are aloud to go to when done with work so that they can get their accelerated reading points. Accelerated reading is when the kids read a book at their level and after done reading they take a test on the computer about the book.
Having appropriate practices in your classroom is a very beneficial thing. The teacher and the children can gain so much from appropriate practices. An advantage to using appropriate practices in a classroom would be that kids could learn hands on by having learning centers. Learning centers are a great learning tool when used appropriately. Teachers must be involved in the kids learning while they are playing in the centers. When teachers are involved in the children’s play it then becomes appropriate and they learn more as do the teachers. Teachers must also switch out the materials so that the children do not come bored with the centers. When you use appropriate practices kids are more likely to be excited about learning as to if they was sitting at a desk doing worksheets bored and not wanting to learn at all.

Some more advantages to using appropriate learning practices would be That kids would be aware of other cultures, gain a indecencies from doing self help tasks, and learning at their own level. When using appropriate practices each child’s learning is looked upon individually to see how much they know. We move each child to the next level by using the scaffolding method. When you let the children choose what they want to learn say in learning centers they learn more and feel like they have a choice. Also when using the appropriate practices the classroom will run a lot more smoothly.
When I was observing I noticed that the inappropriate practices affected the children and had an impact on their learning. When I was at the Early Learning Center in Wayne City, at lunchtime there was only one caregiver in the room and there was twenty to thirty kids. The room was chaotic and hading out lunch was difficult for her. If there were more adults in there lunch time would have ran a lot smoother than what it did. When I was at the Benjamin Franklin Center to observer the head start I could tell that when they did the art project that was already pre cut out and did not get to glue their pieces on the paper they was not interested in it they just did it to get it done to go to centers and their was no constructive learning in that art project. They were not proud of the art project because they did not actually make it.
The children’s learning in the example above was affected because there were not enough teachers in the room to assist the children while eating. Also there was not enough order or structure in the classroom. Also when the teachers cut out the pieces themselves and glued it the kids were fully capable of doing it they but the teachers did not want a mess to clean up. The gives kid the idea of that every one will do things for me. And they will never learn how to do things themselves. As to if they would of let them do it themselves they would have learned those skills and gained an independences from doing the activity. When teaches teach inappropriate practices it takes a toll on the children’s learning teachers may not be able to see it now but when the children get older it will begin to show how much they have affected them.
